Dying Light 2’s lead designer wants to make the player more powerful in a sequel.

Speaking to VGC (opens in new tab) in a new interview, Dying Light 2 lead designer Tymon Smektała spoke about what he’d do in a theoretical sequel to the zombie horror game. “One thing is that if we’re making Dying Light 3, then I would like the main character to start with bigger and better starting abilities and skills,” Smektała told the outlet.

Smektała went on to add that Dying Light 2 basically replicated the beginning of the very first game in the series, where the player character starts out as deliberately weak, and builds from there. The lead designer notes that this is something he would “like to have corrected” if he got the chance to do it all over again.

“So I think in the third game, if it happens, that the character will start with more powers, more skills, more abilities as his basic skill set,” Smektała concluded. It’s a frank and honest assessment from the lead designer, and merely three months after Dying Light 2 originally launched in February.

Still, there’s plenty of opportunities for developers like Smektała to build on Dying Light 2. Developer Techland previously pledged to support the sequel with new content for years to come, and we’ve already seen a number of add-on launches for Dying Light 2 over the last few months. The game’s first post-launch story DLC, however, just recently got pushed back to a September release.

Dying Light 2 has topped five million sales, and the series as a whole has pushed past the 25 million mark.

In a press release exclusive to GamesRadar+, Techland said that Dying Light 2 hit the five million mark on February 28, a little over three weeks after its release on February 3. In the following few weeks, the studio says that “numbers are significantly growing every month,” suggesting that players are keen to dive into the sequel after the seven-year wait since the release of the original Dying Light in 2015.

Speaking of the original Dying Light, Techland also shared that it’s reached 20 million lifetime sales, marking a second significant milestone for the series.

The studio also revealed that it would be bringing “some new content” to Dying Light 2 next week, alongside “a lot of opportunities for all players.” It’s not clear what that’s referring to at this point – even though the developer said that it was “seriously thinking” about a New Game Plus mode for Dying Light 2, it’s likely too early for that, and it sounds as though there’ll be something to show for players of both the original game and its sequel.

Is there a Dying Light 2 new game plus mode for you to try after you complete the story? Given that there are so many choices you can make in Dying Light 2, wanting to replay the game again is certainly something the most dedicated players will do to see the effect of their choices. However, if you’re expecting to find a more hardcore mode once you’ve rolled the credits, you’re going to be disappointed, unfortunately. Here are the details on a new game plus mode in Dying Light 2.

Dying Light 2 tips | Dying Light 2 fast travel and Metro locations | Dying Light 2 weapons and mods | Dying Light 2 gear | Dying Light 2 radio frequency | Dying Light 2 map | Dying Light 2 repair weapons | Dying Light 2 coop | How to get the Dying Light 2 secret frying pan weapon | Does Dying Light 2 have crossplay? | How long to beat Dying Light 2? | Dying Light 2 safe codes | How to assign factions in Dying Light 2 | Dying Light 2 cheats

Is there new game plus in Dying Light 2?

Currently, there is no new game plus mode in Dying Light 2 for when you complete the story. It’s possible that Techland could add such an option as part of their plan to update Dying Light 2 for five years. Given that the first Dying Light game had new game plus, it’s certainly possible that such an option will be implemented at some point, but we are yet to hear anything since Dying Light 2 has only just launched. Keep an eye out for any news from Techland about future updates to the game.

However, it’s not like this game is short of things to do. Replaying the game will allow you to see how certain choices affect the course of the story and even the possible Dying Light 2 endings. Even if you do finish the story and complete the epilogue, you’ll be led back into an endgame state where you can tidy up all the other activities and side quests available in Villedor. There are lots of Dying Light 2 Inhibitors to collect, Military Convoys and Airdrops to loot, and Forsaken Stores and Dark Hollows to plunder at night.

Techland has recently been focusing efforts on a Dying Light 2 multiplayer fix for co-op, as players have reported issues with disconnections and replicating AI dead bodies when exploring Villedor with other players. Other issues include a long or infinite Dying Light 2 black screen and some players not being able to sell valuables to vendors. Some upcoming patches for PC, PlayStation, and Xbox should sort out a lot of these problems, so if you’re looking for things to do to freshen up your Dying Light 2 experience, you could replay the story with a few friends as you make different choices.

To use Dying Light 2 fast travel, you’ll need to find Metro stations and Faction bases that you can jump between, although exactly how you do this isn’t clearly explained in-game. Some of these fast travel points are given to you in the Dying Light 2 story, some just have to be found, and others involve platforming puzzles to get the power back on. A few even have enemies to clear out or are full of Infected and can only be activated at night.

Fast travel might not seem like the most important thing at the start when you’re sprinting over rooftops like the proverbial bat out of hell, but as your knowledge of the city and improves and the Dying Light 2 map size increases, you might want to skip a half-hour commute on rooftiles slick with zombie blood in favor of safe fast travel. That’s why we’ve explained how to fast travel in Dying Light 2, how to find all the Metro stations, and what the limitations of it are once you unlock it.

How to fast travel in Dying Light 2

Dying light 2 fast travel

Dying Light 2 fast travel options open up a little way into the campaign, roughly 8-12 hours in (Dying Light 2 length varies a lot depending on your engagement with side activity), when you complete the section of the story that takes place solely in Old Villedor. At this point, fast travel options will unlock automatically in both the Central Loop and Old Villedor sections, marked on your own map by icons with three white arrows, like a fast forward icon. Holding the cursor over those specific icons will give you the option to fast travel by holding down the X/Square button, whereupon you’ll instantly teleport there.

To expand your options, you’ll have to find and activate other fast travel locations as you explore. Using your binoculars to scan the horizon can save you time physically covering the entire map, and happens to be one of our Dying Light 2 tips. If you do find a metro station, make a detour to add it to your map.

Where to find Dying Light 2 Metro Stations and fast travel points

Dying Light 2 fast travel points are spread out all over the City, usually around one per map area. To find them we suggest heading up to any tall location and scouting with the binoculars – however, unlike windmills, Metro Stations tend to be very close to ground level, so bear that in mind when looking for them.

As we mentioned before, there are different ways to unlock Metro stations. If you’re lucky, just wondering nearby one and discovering it will add it to your map. The rest will have you complete a platforming puzzle to activate several generators. On top of that some will be will taken over by Renegades, or be filled with Infected and require that you come back at night. However, you don’t actually have to fight enemies, you can just get past them and reach the electrical generator section. Knowing how to assign Factions in Dying Light 2 to electrical stations will also make Metro Stations easier to complete.

  2. Waterside metro station – Infected, can only be entered at night, activate electrical generators to use.
  3. Peacekeeper base – activated once you reach the Peacekeeper’s shipwreck base.
  4. Kings Williams Bridge metro – Renegades, activate electrical generators to use.
  5. VNC Tower metro – Renegades, activate electrical generators to use.
  6. Downtown court – Find to activate.
  7. Hayward Square metro – Infected, can only be entered at night, activate electrical generators to use.
  8. Holy Trinity metro – Find to activate.
  9. Main Terminal Station – Peacekeeper base unlocked in the story

Use these Dying Light 2 tips to give you an initial leg-up when you go parkouring your way across Old Villedor to give yourself a massive advantage in the early stages by easily navigating the ruined city and surviving zombies much more painlessly. Dying Light 2 has a lot of mechanics and aspects to consider, and the more of them you master, the better equipped you’ll be to handle the Infected and deal with the people and the choices they present. But for all the little nuances that might not be clear from the start, we’re here to help you with these 10 Dying Light 2 tips to get you into the game faster.

Dying Light 2 fast travel and Metro locations | Dying Light 2 gear | Dying Light 2 radio frequency | Dying Light 2 map | Dying Light 2 repair weapons | Dying Light 2 endings | Dying Light 2 coop | How to get the Dying Light 2 secret frying pan weapon | Does Dying Light 2 have crossplay? | Dying Light 2 length | Dying Light 2 safe codes | Dying Light 2 multiplayer fix | Dying Light 2 black screen | How to assign Factions in Dying Light 2 | Dying Light 2 new game plus | Dying Light 2 cheats

1. You can jump further than you think and mantle up ledges easily

Dying Light 2

If you’re not sure if you can make a jump between two points, the answer is – you almost certainly can. Aiden must have grasshoppers as ancestors somewhere down the line, because you can jump deceptively far, even from a standstill, and the first ability you unlock in the tutorial is an extended jump that takes you even further if you hold down the button.

Likewise, your chances of making the jump are also secure because you don’t actually have to reach the opposite ledge – even if you fall short and hit the wall beneath it, as long as you’re not too far down, you’ll grab the edge and pull yourself up. It’s certainly slower and potentially leaves you vulnerable, but it’s better than dropping to your death and means that you can practically leap across streets if applied properly.

2. Buy stamina upgrades first for easier climbing

Dying Light 2 tips

However, while Aiden can jump incredibly far, his climbing (at first) is nothing to be impressed by. Before you start upgrading your energy reserves, Aiden’s stamina drains very fast when climbing walls and vertical surfaces, and if it runs out halfway up, you’ll plummet – a potentially deadly failure if you’re too high up.

This means that you’ll want to level up your stamina at least a couple of times right off the bat when you have the necessary Inhibitors. The skills in the top-right of the parkour skill tree should be an early priority too, as they allow you to clamber around faster and make the most of your limited stamina pool.

3. Rooftops are better than ground level

Dying Light 2 tips

The fact that you can parkour around isn’t just a fun gimmick, it’s a vital part of your ability to survive. Aiden’s speed and manoeuvrability allows him to outpace practically any enemy if used correctly, and rooftops are very much your ally in this strategy. They have more resources and fewer enemies present, your opponents on ground level often can’t get up there to follow you, and you can use kicks and grapples to throw people off the edge to their death – or drop down on them with some of the later-unlocked special attacks. If you’re ever at street level, do whatever you need to do and then get back up on the rooftops, because it’s there that you’re safest, strongest and in control.

4. Unlock safehouses and Nightrunner bases whenever possible for numerous checkpoints

Dying Light 2 tips

There’s numerous safehouses spread across the map of Dying Light 2, most of which are inactive until triggered – usually simply by interacting with the generator to turn on the UV light within. A small effort, but one well worth the time, as these bases and safehouses act both as places to hide at night and as respawn points. If you’re fleeing from volatiles in the dark, you’ll want a safehouse nearby to squirrel yourself away in, and if you’re killed fighting enemies, you don’t want to respawn several miles away and force yourself to have to trek all the way back. Make time to secure these outposts and ensure there’s a healthy amount of safe zones spread around the map, so you’ve always got a hidey-hole hidden nearby.

5. Use your binoculars constantly to fill out the map

Dying Light 2 tips

It’s easy to forget, but early on you’re given a set of binoculars to survey the area around you, which you can get out and peer through at any time. These actually highlight objectives, key locations, and points of interest on your map if you look at them, indicating where to look with a contracting rectangle that shrinks as you get closer to looking at the right area.

Your instinct might be to use these infrequently, only at the top of the tallest skyscrapers for the best view possible – but frankly, you can use them anywhere. These binoculars are very effective and can trigger on single pixels of objects halfway across the world, even spotting objectives through solid buildings for us at points. Pull them out frequently, and you’ll be rewarded with a real omnipresent understanding of Old Villedor and the Central Loop before long.

6. Night runs are more difficult, but more rewarding in loot and experience

Dying Light 2 tips

Though not as overtly lethal as the previous game, nighttime exploration in Dying Light 2 is still significantly more perilous than exploring under the sun. Not only does your infection mean you have limited time in the dark, forcing you to either find UV lights or take regular medication, but the streets are full of Howlers, special infected who scream when they see you and trigger a chase – dozens of infected who rapidly pursue you until you either successfully hide or find a safe zone. Chases get more intense over time, until the armoured Volatiles themselves join in and put you in serious peril.

There are benefits to running after dark though. For starters, any parkour or combat experience you gain during this time is significantly increased, though you have to survive either until dawn or to a safehouse to bank this XP (get killed and you’ll lose that bonus). Likewise, there’s also certain locations and buildings that are actually safer at night, as all the infected are out on the street, leaving you able to find Inhibitors, loot, and special crafting supplies. Treat these moonlit escapades as high-risk, high-reward.

7. Don’t get too attached to weapons and swap them out regularly

Dying Light 2 tips

Despite the option use Dying Light 2 weapons and mods, you shouldn’t commit deeply to them. Aiden finds weapons regularly and burns through them equally fast, so keep checking your inventory to see what you have and what you don’t need. After a while you’ll be safe in selling anything less than blue rarity, and even then you should use your best weapons soon. It’s possible to get artifact weapons early on, decide to save them for later, only to level up to the point where they’re out-levelled and no longer useful. Whoops!

Of course, it’s also worth mentioning that you can’t really repair weapons in the way you could in the previous game. The only way to restore any durability is to modify the weapons and add new crafting elements, but this can only be done a few times for each weapon and it’s usually just best to have a fully-upgraded melee weapon from the start, rather than doing it by degrees. Just sell, craft, upgrade and discard from the beginning, because hoarding isn’t as good as it sounds.

8. Your GRE Key helps you to find new Inhibitors

Dying Light 2 tips

Later on in the game you’ll find a way to reveal Dying Light 2 Inhibitors on the map, but that’s not for a while and until then you’ve got to rely on your own truffle-hog nose to locate these essential steroids and power-ups. That’s where your GRE Key comes into play – if you’re within 50 meters of Inhibitors a little voice will alert you of that fact, along with an indicator in the bottom-left corner of the screen stating how far away you are. Admittedly it won’t tell you what direction to look, but by exploring and narrowing down the number you should be able to locate the Inhibitors, even if you have to battle through zombie platoons to do so.

9. Use merchants to sell useless items and buy great ones

Dying Light 2 tips

Open up enough crates and boxes in Stay Human and soon you’ll have lots of items classed as “Valuables”. Valuables don’t have any use beyond being sold, simply clogging your inventory until you take them to a shop and sell them off. It’s worth doing this regularly, as the wealth you make from doing it is very substantial. Likewise, pawn off any bad weapons or out-levelled gear to stop your backpack from filling up. Then use that money to buy replacements – some of the best weapons you’ll find are sold from merchants, and high-rarity bludgeoners will have durability to last until your next shopping spree.

10.Combat is about countering and staggering enemies

Dying Light 2 tips

It’s explained fairly well in an early tutorial encounter, but the importance of it can be lost – when it comes to human enemies, the best thing you can do is learn to turn their own attacks against them. Well-timed blocks will stagger them, but as you level up you can also do it with dodges and learn special grapples that throw them across the room. Once staggered, you can follow up with a vaulted kick, a big melee strike, or just use that opportunity to escape.

Things are a little less technical with zombie infected, though you can still use a lot of these abilities on them. That being said, for most hordes you should use their stupidity and predictability against them, luring them about, kicking them off ledges or tricking them into the range of explosives.

Dying Light 2 weapons and weapon mods are incredibly useful to have handy when you need to fend off the Infected of Villedor. You’ll be able to arm yourself with numerous improvised melee weapons, including ramshackle katanas, axes made of disc brakes, and even bows with special arrow types. On top of each bladed or blunt weapon, you’ll also be able to slap on some elemental mods to inflict extra damage and special effects on your foes in Dying Light 2. If you need to know how Dying Light 2 weapons and weapon mods work, and what the best weapon mods are, we’ve got you covered.

Dying Light 2 weapons and how to get them

Dying Light 2 fully modded artifact weapon

Dying Light 2 weapons are obviously very important for fighting and therefore surviving.  As you play, you’ll be picking up new ones all the time from enemies you defeat, crates of loot, and mission rewards. Because you can’t repair things, only boost durability by adding mods, it’s very much a use and lose system. The short lifespan means you’ll be switching and replacing weapons constantly as you progress.

Aiden can hold up to four weapons of any type, including swords, axes, maces, machetes, sticks, hammers, knuckle dusters, and one or two-handed varieties. You’ll even find bows, although the first one you get isn’t great so it’s best to wait superior options later. Getting a good bow allows you to play ranged stealth very effectively, and you can clear enemy bases without ever being seen.

There isn’t really a best Dying Light 2 weapon type, as they all perform quite similarly. That said, one-handed weapons have lower damage but a faster swing speed, while two-handed weapons have high damage with slow swings that require good timing to land. Equip a variety of weapons so that you have the right tool for the job. For example, faster one handed weapons are often best against large crowds of zombies, while slower two handed options work well against bosses or smaller groups.

As we mentioned earlier, further in the game a Dying Light 2 bow becomes available, with lots of different arrow types for you to use. The first bow you get isn’t really much good, but a later bow called the Paper Clip can be found during a mission called The Shoe. And if you don’t get that mission, you can also buy it from traders. That does decent damage and lets you clear entire bases with stealthy ranged headshots. There’s also a crossbow you can get for assigning enough facilities to the Peacekeepers.

Dying Light 2 weapon rarity and tiers

As you progress through the story and level up, you’ll find that your weapons quickly improve in damage, and more gradually improve in durability and rarity. You’ll sometimes be able to find the top-tier Artifact rarity weapons in the big, dark-green containers found around Villedor, particularly in Military Convoys. Traders at major faction structures also offer a selection of decent weaponry for you to buy that improves in damage and rarity as you level up, although the weapons can be quite expensive. Here’s how each weapon rarity tier differs:

  • Common/White: Lowest durability.
  • Uncommon/Green: Improved durability.
  • Rare/Blue: High durability with up to two mod slots and one stat bonus.
  • Unique/Purple: Very high durability with up to three weapon mod slots and two stat bonuses.
  • Artifact/Gold: Best durability with up to three weapon mod slots and three stat bonuses.

It’s important to know that there isn’t a proper system for fully repairing and levelling weapons, although there are some things that can be done to repair weapons in Dying Light 2. If you find something you like, don’t get too attached and don’t be afraid to use it. You might want to save an Artifact weapon that you found early in the game, but you’ll quickly find that it gets outclassed in damage by lower-tier weaponry. Enjoy them while they last and always be on the lookout for higher-damage replacements.

Once your weapons have reached the end of their lifespan, you’ll unfortunately find that there is no dismantling system in Dying Light 2 that allows you to break down your damaged tools for scrap parts. The only thing to do is sell them to a trader or use them until they totally break. Individual Dying Light 2 weapons are rarely valuable, so you’ll have to sell in bulk to get the greatest return for buying new and more powerful weapons that you can outfit with weapon mods.

How to use Dying Light 2 weapon mods

Dying Light 2 weapon mods can really change up how your weapons behave and how much damage they do. While they’re not crucial – what with weapons having limited durability and easily becoming outclassed by newer weapons – they’re certainly useful for their elemental damage and status effects that can open some creative combat techniques.

To get weapon mods, you need to buy the blueprints from Craftmasters in Dying Light 2. Each Craftmaster will have a selection of mods for you to buy in their stock, so make sure you visit a few to pick up to fill out your personal stock of mod blueprints. Dying Light 2 mods and other pieces of gear can also be upgraded by a Craftmaster to improve their damage and effectiveness in other areas.

Once you’ve bought a mod, you can apply it to a weapon by opening your inventory and hovering the cursor over the weapon that you want to modify. Press Y/Triangle to open the mod menu, and you’ll be able to select a mods for every available slot on your weapon from the list of mods you have unlocked. You’ll need to make sure you meet the material cost to actually apply the mod, however. Once a mod has been applied to a slot, it cannot be changed or removed.

Dying Light 2 weapon mods are broken down into three different attachment slots: Tip, Shaft, and Grip. Functionally, the Tip and Shaft slots don’t have any particular traits other than to organise weapon mods and limit the combinations. Grip mods focus on enhancing a weapon by increasing its damage or increasing the rate at which it deteriorates. However, not all weapons have access to all slots, so you’ll be able to fully kit out only the best Unique and Artifact weapons. There’s also a bonus fourth slot for Charms, although those are purely cosmetic.

There are also several flavors of Dying Light 2 weapon mods that fit into these attachment slots:

  • Crit Mods: the effects of these mods are activated on a Critical Hit which has a random chance of happening when you strike an enemy. There are Tip and Shaft Crit Mods available.
  • Power Mods: these mods need to be fully charged by hitting enemies and can then be activated with a Power Attack. You can only perform such attacks if you have the relevant Combat Skill unlocked. You can get Power Mods for the Tip slot.
  • Blast Mods: these mods can be manually activated but have a cooldown time before they can be used again. You’ll find these in the Shaft slot.

Each mod has its own elemental damage type or effect that harms your enemies in particular ways. All of them deal varying amounts of extra damage but they also affect enemies in particular ways. Here are all the types:

  • Fire: Burns enemies over time and can spread to nearby enemies
  • Shock: Strong damage that can chain to other nearby enemies
  • Toxic: Causes enemies to stagger, allowing you to vault over them
  • Freeze: Has an immobilizing effect on enemies
  • Bleed: Deals high damage over time
  • Blast: Forcefully knocks enemies away

Dying Light 2 best weapon mods

While a lot of Dying Light 2 mods perform well and generally increase your weapon’s damage by a substantial amount when they activate, there are a few that we’d recommend you try as they proved to be particularly effective. Here are the best weapon mods in Dying Light 2 in no particular order:

  1. Spark: Tip or Shaft slot Crit Mod that shocks an enemy on a critical hit and can chain to others nearby.
  2. Flame: Tip or Shaft slot Crit Mod that ignites an enemy on a critical hit which can spread to other enemies.
  3. Puff: Tip slot Power Mod that blasts an enemy back with a power attack once the mod has been fully charged.
  4. Acid: Tip slot Power Mod that staggers enemies with the Toxic effect, making them good for vaulting over, when hit with a power attack once the mod has been fully charged.
  5. Inferno: Shaft slot Blast Mod that scorches enemies with a blast of Fire that can also spread to others nearby.
  6. Bane: Shaft slot Blast Mod that fires a blast that staggers enemies with the Toxic effect and deals damage, making them good for vaulting over.
  7. Catapult: Shaft slot Blast Mod that blasts an enemy back and deals high damage thanks to a manually activated blast.
  8. Slaughter: Shaft slot Blast Mod that fires a blast that staggers enemies with the Toxic effect and deals damage, making them good for vaulting over.

Any sort of Blast Mod for your weapon’s shaft slot will deal high damage, so those that apply the effects of Fire, Bleed, or Blast are very useful. Unlike Blast Mods, Crit Mods don’t need to be activated manually and are instead random. This mean they provide good passive bonuses when they do activate, so it’s always good to have at least one – be sure to upgrade it to improve its effectiveness and critical hit chance. The most damaging effects, such as Fire and Shock, are great for this mod type,

In terms of specific mod effects, mods with the Blast effect in Dying Light 2 are useful for damage and the knockback. Confusingly, these aren’t the same as Blast Mods for your Shaft slot. The strong knockback from the Blast effect allows you to make some space if you get overcrowded, or make enemies vulnerable to attack. Moreover, Fire and Shock mods are great for dealing high damage to potentially multiple targets at once. Finally, the Toxic effect is very useful for players that favor their parkour and vaulting attacks in combat as Toxic staggers enemies mid-fight.

Dying Light 2 pre-loads are live now, giving players across all platforms the chance to prep their installs so they’re ready to play ASAP.

Despite some copies already making it out into the wild, the proper release date for Dying Light 2 is still set for Friday, February 4. Developer Techland announced on the Dying Light series’ official Twitter account that you can now start pre-loading the game on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X and S – the Switch version was recently delayed, but it’s all cloud-based so you shouldn’t have much to pre-load anyway.

Speaking of small installs, early user reports indicate that Dying Light 2 is markedly smaller on PS5 than it is on PS4. That’s just for the initial pre-load materials, of course. It’s likely that any further data needed to complete the installation once Dying Light 2 unlocks will increase the overall storage requirements for the game, not to mention the contents of the Dying Light 2 day-one patch.

You may want to set up a nice and comfy spot for Dying Light 2 to take semi-permanent residence on your storage drive if you intend to experience everything Techland has planned: the arrival of the first Dying Light 2 story DLC in June is still early days for Techland’s post-release update plan. It’s going to be a busy five years for parkour and zombie slaying.

Check out our Dying Light 2 review to see just how solid of a foundation Techland has laid out for its ambitious undead post-apocalypse.

A brand new Dying Light 2 gameplay trailer sets up the events of the long-awaited sequel, and it does so in surprisingly dramatic fashion, even referencing the protagonist of the first Dying Light, Kyle Crane.

The latest trailer is subtitled ‘The Reason’, and as promised, it vaguely explains Dying Light 2 hero Aiden Caldwell’s motive for traveling to The City, one of the last basecamps of humanity’s failing war against the infected. It’s understandable you’d want to know why Aiden headed there, as exploring the sanctuary’s luxurious lifestyle quickly turns dangerous as human and infected enemies are established.

It turns out Waltz Herder (sp?), a character referenced in earlier Dying Light 2 trailers, kidnapped Aiden’s sister Mia when they were children, and naturally, Aiden is intensely hungry for answers. In the trailer, Aiden questions a couple of people who seem to have some knowledge of the situation, but he’s told the information would be “expensive” to obtain.

At one point in the trailer, an unseen character makes reference to original Dying Light protagonist Kyle Crane. As the camera pans across a (relatively) calm, zombie-less rooftop, the character sighs, “Who would’ve thought the end of the world could be so peaceful? I wish Crane could’ve seen this.”

*Spoilers ahead for Dying Light and its expansion, The Following*

Kyle Crane barely survives the ongoing zombie apocalypse in Dying Light, but in one of the possible endings in The Following, he’s infected and presumably winds up turning into a zombie. It’s unclear if it’s this ending that Dying Light 2 will follow, but it sounds like we’ll learn more about Kyle Crane’s fate regardless.

Techland recently clarified that Dying Light 2’s main story is about 20 hours if you’re focused on just beating the game.

Update:  Techland has issued an update about Dying Light 2’s length in the wake of comments suggesting it was a 500-hour game.

In a tweet (opens in new tab) from the studio’s official Twitter account, reiterated in an email to GamesRadar, Techland clarified that the game’s campaign is only about 20 hours if you’re focused. “More for some, less for others,” reads the message.

Meanwhile, if you want to complete all of the game’s side quests, steep yourself in the world’s history, and interact with every character, you could be spending at least 80 hours with Dying Light 2 “depending on playstyle.”

So where did the whole 500 hours thing come from? Well, according to Techland, it’ll take about that long to see every little thing the game has to offer, including collectibles, dialogue lines, Easter eggs, alternate endings, and more. Essentially, you can experience the meat of the campaign in about 20 hours, but if you want to live in that world for as long as possible, you’ll probably run out of stuff to do somewhere around the 500-hour mark.

Original story:

Dying Light 2 will reportedly take “at least” 500 hours to complete.

Confirmation comes by way of a tweet from developer Techland earlier today, which announced: “To fully complete Dying Light 2 (opens in new tab) Stay Human, you’ll need at least 500 hours – almost as long as it would take to walk from Warsaw to Madrid!”

After a number of fans responded in disbelief – “Do you think this is a selling point?” asked (opens in new tab) one Twitterer – Techland added this second tweet (opens in new tab) a few hours later:

“Note: It’s about 100% completion rate, most of the players who are in for story and side quests will be able to complete the game quicker, it will still be a solid experience though!”

To offset the growing complaints that 500 hours is too long for many players, Techland was forced to tweet a third time, too.

“500 hours is related to maxing out the game – finishing all the quests, endings, and exploring every part of the world, but a regular player should finish the story + side quests and do quite a lot of exploring in less than 100 hours, so don’t worry!”

Dying Light 2’s skill tree was recently revealed in a new teaser trailer, showcasing how Aiden’s abilities can be upgraded. The video – which, as Jordan points out, doesn’t feature any sound until the very end – gives a quick visual demonstration of the skill trees’ layout (opens in new tab), which looks surprisingly – wonderfully! – straightforward, boasting different upgradeable trees for combat and parkour skills.

We also recently got to check out Dying Light 2: Stay Human’s in-depth on user interface options (opens in new tab), too. With a deeply customizable user interface and HUD, players will be able to choose how many dynamic elements appear on the screen – such as a quest tracker that pops up when you’re in the area of current objectives – or opt solely for only the necessities should they prefer.

Dying Light 2 is due to launch on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X on February 4, 2022.

Here are our picks of the best zombie games (opens in new tab) to sink your teeth into right now.

Dying Light 2’s magic is in its momentum. Techland may have spent the better part of three years pulling focus onto the malleable open world it has engineered, where a choice can have sweeping consequences on the shape of the space around you, but the real draw is its movement. The kinetic sense of speed you are able to generate while piloting Aiden Caldwell, a survivor in search of his sister, around the decaying ruins of The City.

I spent four hours playing a near-final build of Dying Light 2 ahead of its new released date of February 4, 2022. While I was supposed to be pushing through the story, settling boundary disputes between three warring factions – the Peacekeepers, Survivors, and Renegades – I could quite happily have spent that time (and more) exploring. And by that, I mean clambering up ledges and bounding across rooftops; shifting effortlessly from a sprint into a wall run, using slides to maintain breakneck momentum with little disruption. A mistimed leap may lead to a dizzying plummet, though the infected that amble throughout the streets are always there to break your fall. The destination be damned, The City is a world you’ll want to spend time moving around in.

Destination Unknown

Dying Light 2

I rarely cared where I was being sent in Dying Light 2, just so long as I was able to get there without breaking my stride. There’s a huge sense of gratification in properly utilizing the parkour ideals that underpin the movement and combat systems. But after a few hours of play time, I can’t say that I feel all that much for the characters or their plight – locked in a deadly power struggle for control of the last occupied city on Earth. Perhaps I’ll grow fonder of them over time, but I found so many of the NPCs to be unlikeable; brash or needlessly offensive as they enlist you into countless fetch quests and supply runs.

The same could be said for the original Dying Light. I don’t know about you, but my memory of its story and quests is a little hazy as a result. What I do remember of the breakout 2015 hit, however, was the way it felt to play. The responsive controls and its boundless, exhilarating sense of freedom; the brutal melee combat and the difficulty shift as day descended into night. Dying Light 2 certainly has more character than its predecessor, but I can’t say that I’m desperate to spend more time with its characters. Although that isn’t necessarily a problem.

Everything I loved about Dying Light has been amped up here. Within its core offering, Dying Light 2 isn’t evolutionary so much as it is deeply iterative. Take melee combat as an example: while the refined systems allow for more creativity they still lack variety – combos of light and heavy attacks until your favorite weapon snaps. But Dying Light 2 makes up for any lingering sense of familiarity with pure, unbridled vitality; never has hacking outstretched arms, slicing into putrefied flesh, and smashing through decaying skulls felt so life affirming.

I was surprised at how freeing movement felt in the early game, even with the skills that are necessary to pull off more complex maneuvers locked behind the progression cycle. Personally, I think the rate at which you unlock abilities in the Parkour and Combat tech trees is a little slow in its current form, and the same goes for accruing resources necessary for crafting. While I understand the necessity of gating protagonist progression in the name of longevity, moving around this world unencumbered is so key to Dying Light 2’s thunderous rhythm that I’d rather have more of the moveset made available to me sooner, and for longer.

Core improvements

Dying Light 2

“At a human-to-human level, we really feel that we owe our community a lot”

Tymon Smektala, lead designer

It would be easy to gripe over how familiar Dying Light 2 is. It’s more technologically advanced, and certainly more impressive from a performance standpoint, but strangely recognizable all the same. Then again, I had such a good time playing around in its sandbox that I can’t say I mind all that much. One thing I respect about Techland’s approach here is that it seems to have a keen idea of who Stay Human is for, and has oriented its priorities accordingly. Dying Light 2 feels like an expressive ‘thank you’ targeted to the 17 million players which ventured into Harran and out into the Countryside who ultimately made this sequel a reality.

Tymon Smektala, lead designer of Dying Light 2, tells me as much. “We feel that we owe a lot to our community. Before the first Dying Light was released, we were kind of known after Dead Island and Call of Juarez, but we also felt like we were the underdog. And then we got the first reviews from the media and they weren’t that good; we kind of felt a little down that the game wasn’t received that well initially. You could feel disappointment in the studio – maybe not much of it, but still some. And then we started seeing what people were saying online and they really, really helped us get through it.”

“They helped us to believe in what we were doing and get our confidence back. At a human-to-human level, we really feel that we owe our community a lot. We don’t want to disappoint them,” continues Smektala. “And now the anticipation is rising and I’m sure there will be sleepless nights waiting for the first reviews and comments from players. And we’ll see… we’ll see. You have to be modest as a game developer, because you might think you have made the best game in the world, but it is only the best game in the world if the gamers are saying that.”

I’ve been thinking about Dying Light 2 a lot since getting my hands on it. I have this lingering sense that Dying Light 2 is a more expansive, and better optimized, version of Techland’s original vision for the series. The studio has a famously good dialogue with its community after putting so much post-launch support behind Dying Light, and it has a broad consensus view of what could change and what should remain the same. The team has years of experience behind it now from playing in this world and more powerful hardware to play with, something that you can feel keenly in the handling models, enemy AI, weapon dynamics, and sharp presentation and performance standards across the build I played around in. I can’t wait to play more of it.

Big decisions

Dying Light 2

So while the way Dying Light 2 plays may not be all that evolutionary, the technology underpinning sure is. The question that’s been front of mind since Dying Light 2 was revealed in 2018 was how would choice and consequence actually manifest itself in this reactive open world that’s four times the size of Harran. The truth is, it’s difficult to know after playing just four hours. I encountered two scenarios in which a decision would change the structure of The City around me and, while it’s certainly cool as hell to see such large districts (the world is made up of seven in total) permanently change because of something that I’ve done, I’m yet to really understand the moral framing driving it all.

There’s this audio sting that plays when you need to make a big decision, typically to hand over control of some critical piece of infrastructure in the City – a water tower, an electrical plant, and so on – to either the Peacekeepers or the Survivors. Consider the former and you’ll be met with a dark, foreboding soundscape, whereas the latter is tracked by a more vibrant and chirpy sound. It paints the choice as fairly black and white, where my expectation was for Aiden (who has no skin in the broader skirmish) to be a neutral actor, seeing the merits of either side of the battle and being swayed on each decision because of the characters around him.

In reality, unless adjustments are made to make these decisions seem like they are sitting in more of a morally gray area, I can see players taking a side early on and following it through to the end – much like those who swayed Paragon or Renegade in Mass Effect with little adjustment, even if there are short or long term benefits to swapping sides at certain points in time. Either way, that’s something we’ll figure out together next year – when we look to see whether Techland is able to stick this landing after numerous delays had thrust Dying Light 2 into what at times felt like was an endless freefall.
