Quentin Tarantino is named Director Of Our Lifetime in the 200th issue of Total Film magazine : a cinematic extravaganza celebrating the last 15 years in movies.

Inside, we talk at length with QT about his incredibly influential career, and during the course of our chat he dropped an intriguing nugget of info surrounding his latest movie, claiming that Django Unchained might be Part 2 of an unofficial trilogy, which began with Inglourious Basterds .

Taking up a serious expression towards the end of our conversation, he explained: “I don’t know, Inglourious Basterds and Django Unchained bespeak a trilogy.

“As different as they are, there is a companion piece quality. There might very well be a third one. I just don’t know what it is yet.”

Django Unchained opens in the UK on 23 January 2013.

Django Unchained may not be in cinemas for another five months or so (even longer for UK audiences) but that hasn’t stopped Kerry Washington from answering a raft of questions about the project at this year’s Comic-Con .

“Broomhilda is very unique because it’s a different kind of strength,” says Washington of how her character compares to Tarantino’s other female leads. “It’s more of an emotional, spiritual, psychological strength. For me, one of the things that I really loved about this character is that she exists in a time when, historically, black women were, out of necessity, independently strong.”

“The breakdown of the black community, in order to maintain slavery, began with the breakdown of the black family,” she continues. “Men and women were not legally allowed to get married because you couldn’t have that kind of love. It might get in the way of the economics of slavery.”

However, according to Washington, it’s the unfailing bond between her character and her husband Django (Jamie Foxx) that provides the film with its beating heart.

“I love that this film is about two people who, even though they exist in a time in our Constitution where they’re only 3/5 of a human being, they so believe in their own humanity and so believe in the love that they share and their illegal marriage, that they risk life to find each other,” she says. “The fact that he travels across the country and goes into the depths of hell to save this woman, in this time period, was so triumphant.”

A western romance that explores America’s relationship with slavery… sounds like QT is pushing those boundaries again! Django Unchained opens in the UK on 18 January 2013.

That didn’t work out, and so far, all we’ve had was Smith’s word on the issue.

“I came really close, it was one of the most amazing screenplays I had ever ever seen,” Smith said.

“I was in the middle of Men In Black 3 and [ Tarantino ] was ready to go, and I just couldn’t sit with him and get through the issues, so I didn’t want to hold him up. That thing’s going to be ridiculous. It is a genius screenplay.”

But when Quentin Tarantino was asked if he could respond to Internet rumours about Smith’s involvement, he had this to say:

“Much more has been made out of that than is the case. When I wrote Django , I did not write it for anybody. I had no idea who was going to play it and it was kind of a little bit like, gosh, who is going to play this guy? And so I met with six different actors.

“[ Will Smith ] was one of the people that I met with. And then I met with Jamie [ Foxx ] and he came over to my house and I was going to put him through the ringer. It was going to be like a three-tier meeting with everybody and kind of really test it out and this and that and let’s do some scenes together. And at the end of this long process, I would make my decision.

“And, frankly, Jamie was the last one that I got together with and after I got together with him, I called the other guys up and I go, ‘Look, I found my Django. And no disrespect and everything and we could have taken it further and I know…’

“But you just know when you meet the guy and I met the guy. And one of the things about him, aside from everything else about Jamie, just when it comes to this movie, he just got it. He just understood.

“He understood what I was writing, he understood what needed to be there and he understood what needed to be on screen and he understood how people should take it.

“But then, also, just to cut to the chase, he was the cowboy. I met six guys, six magnificent actors, but he was the cowboy and I was looking for the cowboy.”

Django Unchained is released in UK cinemas 18 January 2013.

Django Unchained has released a new, full-length trailer, that builds on the promise of the earlier teasers to deliver a blood-soaked hit of premium Tarantino goodness.

The new footage gives us a more thorough introduction to Dr. King Schultz, his initial rescue of Django, and his general badassery with a six-shooter. If Jamie Foxx made off with the previous trailers, Christoph Waltz is undoubtedly the star of this new one.

There’s also a first glimpse of Samuel L. Jackson as the elderly house slave of Leonardo DiCaprio’s villainous Calvin Candie, and a troubling look at the relationship between Candie and the female slaves he keeps on his plantation.

There’s also some more top-notch dialogue to be savoured here, including a reproachful female slave who takes Django down a peg or two. “You really free?” she asks. “You mean you wanna dress like that?” Zing!

Django Unchained has released a new batch of images featuring Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz and Leonardo DiCaprio looking pin-sharp in their period Western clothing.

There are a lot of stern faces on show as Foxx and Waltz ponder the magnitude of the task ahead, while Waltz also gets to show his badass side, filling one unlucky punter with a round of hot lead.

The film will see Foxx’s freed slave Django strike up an alliance with dentist-turned-bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz (Waltz), as he attempts to rescue his wife from the clutches of evil plantation owner, Calvin Candie (DiCaprio).

The latest rumour surrounding the production is that it will screen a first full trailer ahead of screenings of Prometheus , although that has yet to be officially confirmed. Not a bad double-header though, is it?

Django Unchained has released the first pair of images of its cast in full costume, with Christoph Waltz, Jamie Foxx and Leo DiCaprio all suiting up for Tarantino’s western.

The first image shows Foxx and Waltz as Django and Dr. King Schultz respectively. The former is a freed slave who learns how to become a fearsome bounty hunter under the tutelage of the latter.

Schultz is a former dentist turned bounty hunter who equips Django with the skills to rescue his wife from plantation owner Calvin Candie (DiCaprio), who is keeping her as a slave at his Candie Land brothel.

Speaking of Candie, the second image shows him in all his villainous glory, sporting a rather fetching combo of smoking jacket, waistcoat and facial hair whilst brandishing a hammer menacingly.

Both images have got us genuinely excited at the prospect of a Tarantino-helmed Western, with each of the film’s leading men scoring high in the badass stakes. Django Unchained opens in the UK on 18 January 2013. Let the countdown begin…
