A Kickstarter project (opens in new tab) to create a deluxe hardcover edition of Dark Souls book ‘You Died: The Dark Souls Companion’ has launched.

The original paperback version was written by Keza MacDonald and Jason Killingsworth, and was first published back in April 2016. Focusing on examining the game’s mysterious lore as well as the stories that have sprung out from people’s time in Lordran, Dark Souls fans took it to heart.

Now, this Kickstarter is aiming to create a version of the book that matches the intricate detail of the game that inspired it. Writing on the Kickstarter page, author Jason Killingsworth explained why he is revisiting the project: “The hardcover edition of You Died felt like it just needed to exist. A game as timeless as Dark Souls (opens in new tab) deserves a classic-feeling volume that will look striking on one’s shelf or coffee table.”

This isn’t just a republishing of the book either. Not only will it have revised and updated text, there’ll also be screens captured by Duncan Harris, who creates video game photography as Dead End Thrills. Killingsworth has also recruited Edge Magazine’s art editor, Andrew Hind, to help redesign the full-colour book. Check out a spread from the book below.

Right, you’re probably wondering what the reward tiers are. For €45 or more, you get a copy of the book, whereas for €55 or more, you’ll get a ‘Way of the White’ variant cover. €80 or more will get you both, which you can see below.

€150 will not only get you both books, but you’ll also receive a limited edition ‘You Died’ poster, as well as having your name carved into the book’s acknowledgements section. €295 or more will net you the ‘Gravelord Servant Edition’ which is leather-bound and comes with its own protective coffin, which is pretty thematically appropriate for Dark Souls, as well as the poster.

Finally, €1,000 or more will get you everything mentioned thus far, as well as your name “symbolically encrypted” into the book. You’ll know where you name is, but no-one else will… Well, give or take the designer.

If you’re a Dark Souls fan, then you can contribute to the Kickstarter project here (opens in new tab), which is looking to raise £42,794 to get this ultimate version of You Died made.

Summer is officially here. It’s not the singing birds in the trees that’s alerted us to the fact, nor the blistering heat, nor even the fact that at last the chime of the ice-cream truck is like a beacon of hope. No, it’s the fact that the Steam Summer Sale has begun. Ignore that wailing coming from your bank account, as you’ve probably already delved into the bargains on offer. Yet despite the dizzying amount of money this wondrous time of the year will save you, there are a few things that we can’t quite see past when it comes to Steam sales. Try telling us that not one of these has ever annoyed you before.

Being incredibly excited to buy a game before discovering that you already own (and installed) it

Remembering that you did the same thing, with the same game, during the last Steam sale

Realizing you now own more games than any normal human being can play in a single lifetime

When you get faked out because the price reduction isn’t actually displaying (and yes, this pretty much only happens because we’re zealously refreshing the page)

Thinking about how much money Gabe Newell just made in the past 30 seconds

Waiting on this screen…

…only to land here

When you can’t download your new purchase because Valve’s servers are getting absolutely hammered

Thinking, if only for a moment, about how much money these developers would’ve been making if everyone was actually paying full price for their game

When you see the same game on sale for the 50th freaking time

(Really though, every person on Steam either owns Terraria or they don’t intend to; stop slashing the price)

When reviews of the first Dark Souls surfaced, many writers likened their experience to a tour of Hell. The game’s legendary difficulty begs for a metaphor of molar-grinding torment on a sufficiently grand scale, and the Hell allusion is a natural one considering that Dark Souls draws so much inspiration from spiritual iconography, with its demons, cathedrals, curses and souls, liturgical chanting, and kneeling as if praying while kindling bonfires. The idea of a game designer creating a place as baleful as Lordran and sending players there to suffer carries a whiff of damnation. If you spelunk deep enough below ground in Dark Souls, you’ll discover lakes and rivers of molten lava – not exactly subtle.

Dante Alighieri’s 14th century epic poem The Divine Comedy subdivides the expanse between the lowest level of Hell and the highest echelon of Heaven into a series of strata, or circles. Lordran is unique among open-world RPGs in that its progression shares Dante’s vertical journey, as opposed to being a mostly flat two-dimensional sprawl. But what if, instead of clawing your way towards the centre of the earth, you carve an ascending path? It follows that you should expect to arrive at something resembling Heaven. As it happens, this is precisely what you find when you dispatch the Iron Golem atop the roof of Sen’s Fortress. The cutscene that follows shows a pack of winged demons carrying you up the side of a sheer cliff face, over a wall, and then depositing you at the doorstep of the radiant city of Anor Londo.

The way you reach Anor Londo is a departure from the unbroken transitions that typically attend your passage between Lordran’s various provinces, since Dark Souls tends to forgo the expository crutch of cutscenes. In most adventure games, entering an area for the first time sees the camera pull back dramatically and pan across so you can take in your surroundings, similar to how a flyover camera shot might help a person watching a TV broadcast of golf to study the layout and hazards of a particular hole. Dark Souls’ designers understand that there’s more thrill and uncertainty when you’re made to undertake the burden of cartography yourself. Dark Souls never hands you a map, just a quill. There’s a vast emotional difference, after all, between exploring uncharted terrain on foot and by helicopter.

If Anor Londo functions as a kind of heavenly city, it makes sense that it’s the one area in the game you’re incapable of reaching by your own agency. Doesn’t Christianity teach that Heaven is in another dimension and requires the intervention of divine rapture? There’s a wonderful discordance in the fact that, in the place of beatific angels, you have demonic gargoyles hoisting you to Anor Londo’s impossible plateau. The sense of rapture is heightened by a moment in the cutscene where the camera loses sight of your avatar altogether for several moments, soaring up the side of the cliff and over Anor Londo’s battlement. You have the sensation of flight yourself for those moments, as if you’re no longer peering through a camera lens but through your own unblinking eyes.

Those first glimpses of Anor Londo are dazzling. It’s hard to believe how much sunlight there is flooding over the city’s ocean of cathedral spires. Dark Souls can be so bleak at times, so starved of warmth and light, that the beauty seems almost eye-shadingly pornographic – like the point in Cormac McCarthy’s The Road where the starving protagonists stumble upon the untouched bomb shelter with its gratuitous bounty of food and drink.

Dark Souls obsesses over its dualities. In the opening cinematic, the narrator relates Lordran’s genesis story and the point at which fire entered the world. “With fire came disparity,” she says. “Heat and cold, life and death, and of course, light and dark.” If the bonfire checkpoints dotting the world are tiny breadcrumbs of heat and light, the sun is the ultimate cosmic beacon, and Anor Londo seems to be the banquet table on which that feast has been most amply served.

Anor Londo is also one of the only areas of Lordran that doesn’t lie in ruin. It offers a rare peek at a world preserved, a vision that’s even more arresting since you’ve recently traversed the dismal crumbling grey bulwark of Sen’s Fortress. All Anor Londo’s buildings share a cream-coloured exterior, and the game compensates for such uniformity with a sun-baked warmth you can almost feel radiating off the stone’s surface. Interiors are more ornate, with floors covered in a handsome interplay of white and blue marble. There’s an austere quality to these spaces, with no cloth or cushioned furniture to soften the hard surfaces, or dampen the clatter of weapon on shield.

From your first glimpse of Anor Londo, there’s no doubt as to your ultimate destination. Just as a visitor to Disney World instinctively heads for Cinderella Castle, the huge cathedral at the city’s hub grabs your attention with its innumerable spires. Like the game’s boss creatures, its scale is one of the few facets of Dark Souls that betrays its Japanese origins – though perhaps not as much as its most prestigious resident, Gwynevere, Princess Of Sunlight, whose mammaries are large enough to sustain separate gravitational fields.

But you’ll never stand in her presence unless you best Executioner Smough and Dragon Slayer Ornstein. Anor Londo is where Dark Souls casts off restraint. The highest altitude. The brightest sun. The most exuberant architecture. The hardest boss battle. The most maternal figure. Enjoy your stay.

If you love the world of Dark Souls (opens in new tab) but you’re not so much a fan of repeatedly dying to its inhabitants, an upcoming Dark Souls comic series published by Titan Comics might be the proverbial campfire you’re looking for. Penned by George Mann (Doctor Who: The Eighth Doctor) and illustrated by Alan Quah (Godzilla: Awakening), issue #1 will hit shelves on April 6 – just ahead of Dark Souls 3 (opens in new tab)’s worldwide release date of April 12. The alternate cover art you see above is by Joshua Cassara.

“Dark Souls has a rich, original universe that’s just begging to be explored in comics, and I’m honoured to have the opportunity to delve in and tell some new stories within it,” said Mann in a related press release. “I’ve been a fan of the games for some time, so it’s a real thrill to be able to contribute to the mythology of the Hollows and their world.”

We’ll have to wait and see if Mann and Quah’s take on From Software’s dying fantasy world lives up to the games, but I gotta admit that I’m intrigued by the idea of reading lore that’s a bit more coherent than whatever I would piece together from item descriptions.

If you pay close attention in Bloodborne, you learn that a werewolf’s ultimate weakness isn’t quicksilver or wolfsbane – it’s doors. Specifically, it’s doorframes that are too big for their hulking bodies to fit through. You can stand on the other side and comfortably hack them to death without any concern for your life, like you’re fighting a bag of potatoes with a target painted on the front. It’s cheap, it doesn’t agree with the laws of physics as we understand them, and I love it so much. Not just because it makes my life easier when I’m facing down three long-toothed rabies factories, but because it lets me work smarter, not harder. In fact, that’s what I really love about cheesing just about any game: it makes me feel like I’m in-tune with the game itself, and understand it well enough to exploit mechanics I’m not supposed to know about.

Generally speaking, cheesing is seen as completing a challenge in an underhanded way that isn’t in the spirit of the game, like leading an ultra-powerful boss off a cliff or shooting from a convenient hidey-hole where no one can reach you. In many circles these techniques are poorly regarded – cheesing is often said in the same breath as glitching or exploits, which are really just technical synonyms for cheating. But I don’t see those things falling into the same category, because cheesing doesn’t alter the basic framework of the game by prodding at frayed code. Cheesing a game comes from studying its many details and eccentricities, and using what you find to confront challenges in unexpected ways.

Take, for example, horror-romance-puzzle game Catherine. In between navigating the throes of romantic entanglement, your job is to rearrange the building blocks of a tower so you can create a path to the top. One boss in the game has the ability to change the blocks ahead of you into traps like spikes and black holes. It’s an aggravating segment that you can fail with an errant twitch, unless you realize that you have the ability to undo your last block-pulling move, which also undoes the boss’s spell. You can then hop to the next level and pull out another block before he makes a move, bypassing his cheap tactic with a cheap tactic of your own.

That gets you to the top on your own terms, and it wasn’t by abusively duplicating items or manipulating some other mix-up in the code. By paying attention to how the ‘undo’ function affects the game in less obvious ways and making creative use of what you learn, you’re able to utilize a mechanic in a way you may never have thought of otherwise. It’s not the same as trying to beat a game out of contempt or superiority (opens in new tab). It’s a battle of the minds against a game you respect and love enough to learn it inside-out.

Of course, you have to be open to the idea of the game cheesing back – I had to bite my tongue when a massive, stampeding pig killed me through the floor in Bloodborne. But in the end that means you’re interacting with the game on an even deeper level, which just makes playing it more personal and fun. So next time you snipe Sekrion from above in Destiny (opens in new tab) or goad Ceaseless Discharge into a bottomless pit in Dark Souls, banish the word ‘cheating’ from your mind. It’s just you and the game, having a Gotcha moment.

Making their own Ultra Hard modes

If you’re looking for a challenge, tons of games will readily provide one. Between extreme difficulty settings, permadeath modes, and special end-of-game ranks, developers love giving masochistic gamers the tools they need to take on thumb-blisteringly arduous playthroughs. But sometimes, even the built-in options don’t offer enough of an obstacle to overcome. And when that happens, it’s time for patient, dedicated, maybe-a-little-insane players to invent their own kind of Herculean feats.

Through a combination of playfulness, ingenuity, and a dash of self-hatred, passionate gamers have come up with some truly inspired ways of testing their reflexes and cognitive thinking in their favorite titles. What follows are some of the custom rules and restrictions players put on themselves in order to up the ante to incredible heights. And while these challenges might seem completely impossible to us mere mortals, they’ve all been achieved by at least one incredibly determined human being. If you’re brave and/or crazy enough, perhaps you can follow in the footsteps of these gaming demigods, or devise something even more intense yourself.

Guide Young Link through treacherous dungeons… blindfolded

During the Awesome Games Done Quick marathon that kicked off 2015, expert player Runnerguy2489 dazzled a room full of people that are renowned for their skill at playing video games. He did this by playing The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time without looking at the screen, making his way through the three ‘Child Dungeons’ encountered at the start of the game all while wearing a blindfold.

Now, this isn’t the first time a runner has amazed onlookers with a live performance of blindfolded gaming – Sinister1’s blind Punch-Out!! run is a must-see (unless you’re wearing a blindfold). But that run involved a stationary character and limited plane of movement, while Ocarina of Time drops you into a massive three-dimensional world. Watching Runnerguy2489 work his way past countless obstacles with only subtle sound effects, environmental cues, and his memory to guide him, all while he’s verbally explaining what’s happening, is absolutely stunning. He’s essentially the Luke Skywalker of Zelda speedrunners.

Defeat Dark Souls with the power of rock

The Souls series has a reputation for being cruel, but that’s unfounded – it simply requires caution, pattern recognition, and sharp reflexes to succeed. So if you can beat those games with a regular 360 pad, why not a plastic rhythm game peripheral? Beating Ornstein and Smough one-handed wasn’t enough for Benjamin ‘Bearzly’ Gwin, so he decided to map the game inputs to some Rock Band instruments – first a guitar, then a drum kit.

Even with a greatly limited moveset, Bearzly’s insanely impressive runs show just how far you can get with camera controls, an attack button, a roll button, and a generous amount of skill. And by ‘far’, I mean the end credits of both Dark Souls games. Just get ready for some seriously sore forearms in the morning.

Beat Final Fantasy in a party of one

Final Fantasy games are all about teamwork, where a ragtag group of adventurers band together to overcome evil. Or, if you’re particularly sure of your skills, you can venture off on your lonesome and hog all the glory for yourself. The FF series lends itself nicely to those that want to deprive themselves of additional skills or party members, but the best starting point is the original. Simply pick your preferred class, let your other three party members hit the dirt, and get ready to grind to max level just to have a chance of survival!

Each class offers varying degrees of outrageous difficulty, from the Fighter’s more forgiving balance of defense and offense, to the White Mage’s delicate combo of physical frailty and evasion spells. But the ultimate challenge is piloting a lone Thief through the entire game – the weakest class, whose only specialty is running away from fights. Good luck.

Conquer Spelunky alone while cradling an eggplant for dear life

If you’ve ever played it, then you know that Spelunky is by no means an easy game. Careless or mistimed jumps will often get you insta-killed, and everything in its cavernous depths is out to get you. The only thing more frail than your spelunker’s life is the Eggplant, a seemingly useless item that’s impossibly tricky to find and instantly splats if anything touches it. But wouldn’t you know it – the Eggplant actually has the power to transform the final boss King Yama in the hidden Hell stage.

Simply getting that far is an impressive feat, and doing so with an Eggplant intact was only thought to be possible in co-op play. But through an astonishing display of patience, reflex, and some heart-stopping near misses, runner Bananasaurus Rex managed to finish the game solo with an Eggplant on King Yama’s noggin. This extensive breakdown of Rex’s run shows just how miraculous it is that challenge can actually be completed.

Be picky with your Pokemon team in the Nuzlocke Challenge

Here’s a popular player-made challenge that’s a bit more forgiving than most, thanks to its straightforward ruleset and emphasis on those fancy ’emergent narratives’ rather than raw skill. Here are the basics of the Nuzlocke Challenge: any Pokemon that faint are considered dead and must be released, and the only Pokemon you can even attempt to capture are the first ones you encounter in any given area.

That’s it! But what you’ll soon find is that fate is about to deal you a misfit hand of Pokemon, and it’s your battle to make the best of it. Nicknaming each of your Pokemon is highly recommend, so that you may cheer for them when they’re victorious and weep for them should they fall in battle. You might not fill your Pokedex while attempting the Nuzlocke Challenge, but you’re sure to see the Pokemon that you’d typically ignore in an entirely new, deeply personal light.

Brave the perils of Diablo 2 as a naked, unarmed Sorceress

Like many Diablo 2 players, a forum user by the name of MongoJerry liked to imagine unique backstories for his characters – all of whom had rather atypical builds – and chronicle their adventures online. And by my estimation, his crowning achievement in both storytelling and spectacle is Irene the Infirm, a Hardcore Sorceress with no armor, no weapons, no stat points assigned, and no abilities learned.

With nothing but her two fists and some help from her equally unarmed mercenary, Irene slew every monster in Act 1, including the big boss Andariel. When you’re as frail as wet tissue paper and your damage caps out at two hitpoints, downing any enemy is a feat, let alone a half-naked, poison-spewing demon. I highly suggest that you read the story of Irene the Infirm if you want to experience the glory of D2’s best role-playing builds.

Hit max level in World of Warcraft without ever choosing sides

Azeroth and its denizens are defined by conflict, with constant tension between Horde and Alliance players. But not everyone’s born to fight – and some commendably dedicated players would rather abstain from all the ‘war’ business in Warcraft and experience the world their own way. The race of Pandaren start their journey as a neutral third party, but are forced to swear allegiance to a faction when leaving the starting zone. So what did player Doubleagent do when he wanted to hit max level as a conscientious objector?

He simply stayed put on in the Wandering Isles zone, slowly but surely grinding his way to the previous level cap of 90 through professions alone. This amounted to 173 days of in-game time spent collecting herbs and mining nodes for paltry scraps of XP. That’s dedication. There’s also the similar tale of Irenic, a Tauren who hit 90 without ever killing a single creature.

Slice your way through Soulcalibur with a plastic fishing rod

Reading about this nutty accomplishment in the pages of EGM was my first exposure to the idea of using niche peripherals to play the ‘wrong’ game. Clearly no longer content with the humdrum action of Sega Bass Fishing, an intrepid Japanese gamer took it upon himself to beat the original Soulcalibur (on Ultra Hard, no less) with a Dreamcast Fishing Controller.

Watching him deftly control Cervantes’ sword swipes with flicks of the fake half-fishing rod feels like the precursor to Wiimote waggling, only five times more comical. And those moments when he reels in with the rage of a thousand suns while charging up for an attack are just too good.

Score the bare minimum amount of points in Super Mario Bros.

Most people ignore their scores when playing a Super Mario game, simply content to reach that axe behind Bowser and send him plummeting into a pit of lava. And while chasing high scores is all well and good, why not try beating the game with the lowest number of points possible? Runner NotEntirelySure found the answer to one of life’s greatest mysteries: 500 points is the absolute minimum score possible while still finishing the game (without continues, naturally).

The catch is that this can only be accomplished by never collecting a coin or killing an enemy, then jumping at the bottom of the stage-ending flagpole when the timer reaches ‘000’. Never before have you seen Mario so afraid to snag a golden coin or bop a Goomba, but he gets the princess-rescuing job done all the same.

Namco Bandai’s teasing a new announcement (opens in new tab) on the Facebook page for its cult smash, Dark Souls. Yes, within the game’s world, the company hates you and lives only to hear the anguished wails of your death throes; but this is Social Media, so you ain’t hearing squat until you pony up the Likes. In the meantime, the game’s page continues to fill with pleas for a PC port of the beloved die-’em-up.

Above: Sure, plenty of you are far too tough to ever see this text – but if this is how the game’s being marketed, excuse us for playing along

Thank goodness, then, that Australian print mag PC Powerplay (via NeoGAF (opens in new tab)) is on hand to provide a slightly less oblique hint in the form of this teaser page for the next issue, presenting Dark Souls’ most-viewed line of text in its authentic font and coloring. This would seem like a pretty sure sign… but in the world of Dark Souls, nothing is certain except your inevitable doom. While you wait for concrete news, then, perhaps try crossing all your fingers while playing your favorite existing PC dark-fantasy title: such ridiculous tests of arbitrary mastery may soon be par for the course.

From Software has patched Dark Souls to v1.05 in English-speaking territories, bringing the RPG up to speed with similar patches released earlier in the month for Asian territories. The patch addresses a lot of gameplay imbalance issues, evening up the odds between you and your foes to make for an easier – just kidding, the good stuff’s been downgraded and the hard stuff’s been bumped up.

(opens in new tab)

The 1.05 patch addresses a number of glitches, reducing the instances of freezing, graphical snarl-ups and bugs in the game’s map section. Of course, in a game designed to remind players of how effing hard videogames can be, the most persistent bug of all is player survival, which is why many of the most useful player abilities have been scaled back to give your absurdly overpowered enemies a fighting chance. Honestly, what else did you expect from a title whose makers released unbeatable bastards into the game (opens in new tab) to deal with players being alive when they weren’t supposed to be?

Here’s the complete changelist, courtesy of Pastebin (opens in new tab).

From Software has released new gameplay footage from its Project: Gamer Rage (aka Dark Souls), revealing a little more about the terrifying tumor spiders, head crab dragons and iron giants set to terrorize players in the upcoming Demon’s Souls successor. Technically, the studio is calling this a ‘trailer’, but after repeat viewings we think ‘glimpse into our nightmarish gaming future’ is more appropriate.

GRrecently nominated Dark Soulsas the E3 2011 game most likely to consume our lives -and for good reason; it looks soul crushingly hard. That’s not to say a good challenge is a bad thing, just that we hope it’s the kind of challenge that rewards persistence and strategy, and not the unbalanced kind that results in broken controllers, curse words and anxiety attacks.

Dark Souls is being hammered out for the PS3 and Xbox 360 with an anticipated release date of October 4th in North America, and October 7th in the UK.
