The best PS Vita games show how much can be accomplished in a short period of time. Sony’s powerhouse of a portable console burned bright, and then burned out – but its incredible, versatile library of games lives on. With its beautiful OLED screen and impressive tech specs, the PS Vita was truly ahead of its time, which is just one of the reasons it sits so highly in our ranking of the best handheld consoles.

Still, the reason the system remains so beloved is because of the experiences it delivered. It brought big budget, AAA gaming on the move – something you’ll see reflected in our ranking of the best PS Vita games, many of which were developed by  the biggest developers in the world. This Vita might have been a commercial failure, but those who invested know just how awesome this handheld truly was.

Let’s explore why, with our definitive breakdown of the 25 best PS Vita games of all-time.

Best PS Vita Games, Ranked

25. Killzone: Mercenary

Best PS Vita games

Developer: Guerrilla Cambridge
Released: 2013

Considering its capabilities, the Vita was decidedly short-served when it came to excellent first-person shooters. Fortunately, Guerilla Cambridge was able to fill the void with a superb effort that made its peers look laughable in comparison. While the frame rate can take a hit at times and it’s a little on the short side, it looks tremendous, has great shooting mechanics, and offers you the opportunity to play as both sides of the conflict. Sadly, its excellent online multiplayer is no longer up and running, so you’ll have to make do with the single-player campaign which clocks in at a brief but action-packed five hours.

24. Minecraft: PlayStation Vita Edition

Best PS Vita games

Developer: Mojang
Released: 2014

The accessibility of Mojang’s world builder means it’s perfect for gaming on the go. While some will be disappointed with its lack of story or instruction, the real beauty of Minecraft is the sheer freedom that it offers. Pretty much anything you can think of can be built (providing you have the right resources or are playing in Creation mode) and you’re only really limited by your own imagination. While it lacks the huge playing areas of the PC original, the Vita version still manages to impress on its own terms and looks fantastic too.

23. Soul Sacrifice Delta

Best PS Vita games

Developer: Marvelous AQL
Released: 2014

With Nintendo locking up Monster Hunter for the 3DS, numerous other developers rushed to plug the gaping hole on Vita. Soul Sacrifice Delta is easily the most ambitious of these clones, and it’s the brainchild of Mega Man creator Keiji Inafune. Sacrifice plays a big part in Delta’s mechanics as you’ll have to not only sacrifice fallen enemies to boost your stats but using certain powers will directly debilitate you, meaning there’s a little strategy to go alongside the combat. Delta is an enhanced update of Soul Sacrifice, rather than a proper sequel, and didn’t get a physical release in the west, although an expensive Asian English language version is available.

22. WipEout 2048

Best PS Vita games

Developer: Studio Liverpool
Released: 2012

There was no shortage of great games for the PS Vita’s launch and WipEout remains one of the best racing experiences you can have on the console. Yes, it’s hampered by some slow loading times and the weight and speed of the craft take a little while to get used to, but once the new handling does click you’ll discover the racing and combat to be just as satisfying as earlier games in the series (which are actually set many years after this prequel). While its online multiplayer is a thing of the past, there remains plenty of cart-based content to keep you busy.

21. Dariusburst: Chronicle Saviours

Best PS Vita games

Developer: Pyramid
Released: 2015

Few Vita shoot-’em-ups are as ambitious as this gargantuan game. While many balked at its high digital asking price, it makes perfect sense when you realize just how much content Taito’s magnificent shooter actually contains. In addition to featuring all the extras from the numerous arcade versions, including the 3,000 stage variations of Chronicles mode, Saviours also adds the brand-new Chronicle Saviours mode which gives you over 180 more stages to tackle and all sorts of delicious goodies to unlock, from new ships to bosses and audio tracks. Just be mindful that the nature of the arcade games means Arcade and EX mode are severely letterboxed, which can make it tough to tackle the water-themed bosses.

20. Mortal Kombat

Best PS Vita games

(Image credit: Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment)

Developer: NetherRealm Studios
Released: 2012

The PS Vita is blessed with a wealth of great fighters, but few can compete with the insane amount of content that Mortal Kombat offers. While its online servers have long since shut it features virtually all the content from the PS3’s Komplete Edition, meaning there’s a genuinely excellent story mode to battle through, sickening X-Ray Moves to enjoy and a gargantuan Challenge Tower to climb. Amazingly, the PS Vita version improves on this by retaining all the excellent gameplay and adding new costumes, touch-based finishing moves, and a brand-new Challenge Tower with 150 new missions to complete.

19. Lumines Electronic Symphony

Best PS Vita games

Developer: Q Entertainment
Released: 2012

Q Entertainment’s sound-based puzzle game made its debut on the PSP and this new Vita iteration keeps the same base mechanics while adding in a few clever wrinkles of its own. Touch-based controls are usable as well as a more traditional set-up, while musical skins are now unlocked via a new experience system. Two brand-new blocks are introduced allowing you to shuffle on-screen blocks or chain together blocks and there’s a new Voyage mode where you must continually create colored squares, which is easier said than done. Coupled with a stunning soundtrack and the PS Vita’s OLED display it makes for a beautiful fusion of sight and sound.

18. Dragon Quest Builders

Best PS Vita games

Developer: Square Enix
Released: 2016

As great as Minecraft is, its freeform gameplay certainly isn’t for everyone. If you’re like us and need a little more structure with your digging and building, you’ll find Dragon Quest Builders to be the perfect tonic. It takes the core concept of Mojang’s phenomenally successful game, but marries it to the popular Dragon Quest universe and fills it with likable characters, lite RPG mechanics, and an engaging story. It’s clever with its structure too, slowly giving you simple tasks to complete that rarely tax you, but as the game reaches its conclusion you’ll be overseeing objectives that will be beyond your wildest dreams.

17. The Walking Dead: Season One

Best PS Vita games

Developer: Telltale Games
Released: 2013

It’s possible to purchase several TellTale Games titles on PS Vita, but its first entry in the popular Walking Dead series remains its strongest. While the game doesn’t give anywhere near as much agency over events as it would like you to believe, there’s no denying the weight of each choice you make as every decision seemingly dictates the future of protagonist Lee Everett and his young charge, Clementine. Yes, it’s built on a flimsy game engine that would become ever more problematic with later games, but the distinctive-looking visuals, magnificently written episodes, and numerous tense situations mean your Vita will rarely leave your hands.

16. Rogue Legacy

Best PS Vita games

Developer: Cellar Door Games
Released: 2014

This charming roguelike is one of several PS Vita games that didn’t receive a physical release, meaning you should pick it up sooner rather than later. The clever mechanics at the base of Cellar Door Games’ adventure is that dying lets you carry on playing with a direct descendant of your character and they’ll often have abilities that can enhance or hinder your progress, from shortsightedness to smashing anything they blunder through. You soon realize that every trait can be exploited in some way meaning there are always new ways to explore the procedurally generated castle. It’s certainly not an easy game, but an excellent skill tree and perfectly balanced combat mechanics make each new run that little bit easier.

15. Zero Escape: Virtue’s Last Reward

Best PS Vita games

Developer: Chunsoft
Released: 2012

While the Zero Escape series started on Nintendo’s DS, its two concluding parts can be played on Vita and both of them are cracking yarns. Like 999, Virtue’s Last Reward is split between narrative-based story sections that allow you to interact with the eight other characters who are trapped with you in an unknown location and Escape sections that require you to solve numerous tricky puzzles so you can progress the engaging story. The masterstroke here though is the addition of a new Flowchart that allows you to instantly jump to key points of the story rather than playing through the entire game again.

14. Ys: Memories Of Celceta

Best PS Vita games

Developer: Nihon Falcom
Released: 2012

The Ys series has been knocking around since the late 80s and Memories is actually a remake of the fourth game in the series which itself has two versions by two different developers. Despite its confusing lineage Celceta is a cracking update that features dynamic combat mechanics, a wealth of interesting characters to meet, and a genuine sense of exploration as the amnesia-stricken Adol attempts to piece his memories together while mapping a gigantic forest. It’s a great example of modernizing a 16-bit game for a new audience and is filled with great story beats and some fantastic boss fights. Adol’s Vita adventures would continue with Ys VIII: Lacrimosa Of Dana in 2016.

13. Velocity 2X

Best PS Vita games

Developer: FuturLab
Released: 2014

While its physical release is rapidly escalating in price there’s always the digital version (while the store remains open). Regardless of which option you do plump for it’s unlikely you’ll be disappointed with FuturLabs’ slick shooter/run-and-gun hybrid. As with the original Velocity most levels take part in your Quarp Jet which has the handy ability to teleport, but you can also now dock at various points and it’s here that the game introduces new run-and-gun stages as Kai Tana tears around cleverly constructed levels. She’s as nimble as her jet and can also warp, meaning you’ll have plenty of clever puzzles to solve as you race through each stage. Exceptionally fast-paced and blessed with an astonishing soundtrack, Velocity 2X has some of the most frenetic blasting you can experience on Sony’s console.

12. Odin Sphere Leifthrasir

Best PS Vita games

Developer: Vanillaware
Released: 2013

Although Vanillaware’s game started off on PS2, the PS Vita revision has gone through so many changes it can be considered a standalone (and much better) release. Combat has been dramatically overhauled compared to the PS2 original, numerous new enemies and bosses have been added and clunky elements like the inventory, POW gauge, and Psypher systems have been completely overhauled. The numerous new tweaks, greatly improved framerate, and additional quality of life touches that Vanillaware has added really allow you to enjoy Odin Sphere’s delightful story as it unfolds and intertwines via the five distinct characters you get to control.

11. Guacamelee!

Best PS Vita games

Developer: DrinkBox Studios
Released: 2013

There are a number of entertaining Metroidvanias on Sony’s handheld, but our favorite remains this larger-than-life effort from DrinkBox Studios. As you’d expect from its name, combat plays an important role in Guacamelee! with luchador Juan receiving many combat-based moves that allow him to effortlessly navigate the village of Santa Luchita and best its many inhabitants. Filled with delightful characters, a drop-in and out two-player mode, a sharp script and plenty of memorable boss encounters, Juan’s adventure spans both the land of the living and the dead and never fails to impress. What a pity PS Vita owners never received the sequel.

10. Uncharted: Golden Abyss

Best PS Vita games

Developer: Bend Studio
Released: 2011

Even today we still can’t work out how Bend Studio managed to cram a full-fat Uncharted experience into a 7.2-inch console. Granted it’s hampered by some rather naff touchscreen-based controls (many of which can thankfully be turned off) but that’s the only criticism we really have. The action is relentless, there are some spectacular set-pieces to gape at and Nolan North and Richard McGonagle return as Drake and Sully. Filled with inventive touches from using the PS Vita’s motion controls to aim your gun, or holding your Vita up to a light source, or rubbing its screen to solve puzzles, there’s always a lovely new flourish to discover. Sadly, the Vita never received another adventure quite like it.

9. Spelunky

Best PS Vita games

Developer: Mossmouth
Released: 2013

The original Limited Run Games release of Derek Yu’s masterful platformer sold out in a couple of minutes, making it quite a pricey purchase nowadays. There’s a reason for the high demand though, it’s quite simply the best platformer you can play on Vita, and considering the competition that’s high praise indeed. Spelunky’s brutal difficulty will no doubt put many off, but if you stick with it you’ll find one of the most rewarding experiences around. While stages are procedurally generated, the enemies and traps that inhabit them obey certain laws and you’ll need to understand those in order to make progress. Just make sure to chain your Vita to your wrist as you may want to throw it at times.

8. Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc

Best PS Vita games

Developer: Spike
Released: 2013

This excellent visual novel and murder mystery game is cleverly split into two distinctive parts. The School Life sections feature dating sim elements and have you chatting to your peers as you try and work out who is knocking off other students and the identity of a creepy talking bear called Monokuma. You also get the opportunity to investigate rooms and pick up clues similar to the Phoenix Wright games. Class Trials on the other hand crop up whenever a murder victim is found and you then have to work out who the killer is using multiple choice answers or literal “Truth Bullets” to hopefully catch someone in a lie and save your own skin in the process. Sharply written and expertly paced it’s one of the finest examples of the genre on Vita. Its two Vita sequels also come highly recommended.

7. Dragon’s Crown

Best PS Vita games

Developer: Vanillaware
Released: 2013

Vanillaware’s vibrant brawler is also available on PS3 and PS4 but the Vita’s stunning OLED screen punches up the action no end. Dragon’s Crown is essentially a modern-day evolution of the scrolling fighters of old but ramps things up considerably thanks to its rich combat system, some solid RPG mechanics, six distinctive character classes that all play differently from each other, and some truly huge dungeons to navigate. While it lacks the multiplayer of its bigger brothers, the enemy AI is balanced enough that you don’t mind battling the game’s often stunning bosses on your own. The studio’s earlier release, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, is equally worthy of your time, but quite pricey now.

6. Severed

Best PS Vita games

Developer: DrinkBox Studios
Released: 2016

DrinkBox Studios pushed out some wonderfully creative stuff on Vita and this epic slash-’em-up from the Toronto-based studio is as challenging as it is beautiful. Blessed with a surprisingly rich story, Severed casts you as Sasha, a plucky young girl on a quest to find her missing family. With a demonic blade in hand, you swipe at the PS Vita’s screen to deliver quick slashes, slow swipes, and clever counters as you’re constantly assaulted by grotesque nightmares that are vividly brought to life with the studio’s distinctive art style. Each monstrosity in the game has its own weaknesses and it becomes a mad juggling act as you switch between multiple targets to exploit the chinks in their defenses. Severed is one of those rare Viva titles where its touched-based controls improve the action rather than detract from it, so download it now and prepare to give your fingers a proper workout.

5. TxK

Best PS Vita games

Developer: Llamasoft
Released: 2014

Jeff Minter has been tweaking and evolving Tempest for years now and with TxK he comes pretty close to perfecting it. At its heart, TxK is a tube shooter meaning you zip around the edges of elaborate shapes shooting at anything in your path, before proceeding to the next level. It’s simple enough in its execution, but TxK works so well because Minter is a master at creating twitch reaction-based shooters and TxK is one of his finest ever creations. Each level not only looks incredible thanks to the trippy psychedelic visuals and the Vita’s OLED screen, but they also sound incredible too and it’s this masterful blend of shooting and aesthetics that makes TxK so hard to put down. It has an alluring pull that’s impossible to ignore and it’s a crying shame that it never received a physical release.

4. Hotline Miami

Best PS Vita games

Developer: Dennaton Games
Released: 2013

Dennaton Games’ viciously violent top-down shooter is as much a puzzle game as it is an all-out blaster. Each meticulously structured level requires you to navigate rooms filled with goons and achieve your goals as violently as possible. Doors can be slammed into enemies, weapons can be thrown at them and dogs can be violently stabbed. No deed is too dirty for your protagonist Jacket and you’ll have to do a lot of nasty stuff and don several animal masks (all of which grant you distinct powers) before you reach the game’s conclusion. Hotline Miami is as stylish as it is vibrant, thanks to its neon-soaked pixel art and solid writing, and shouldn’t be missed. Its equally violent sequel, Wrong Number, is also available on Sony’s console.

3. Tearaway

Best PS Vita games

Developer: Media Molecule
Released: 2013

While an enhanced version would make its way to PS4, we feel Media Molecule’s inventive platformer fares best on Vita. Like many early Vita games, Tearaway makes heavy use of the PS Vita’s features, but here they enhance the on-screen action and never feel like forced-in gimmicks. You can touch the back screen to poke your fingers into the world and interact with it, create various things for the world’s inhabitants via the touchscreen and even appear in the game as a Teletubbies-styled sun. Outside of its many innovative flourishes Tearaway takes place in a beautifully constructed paper world full of folds, creases, and wrinkles and has a charming story at its center that’s every bit as memorable as Tearaway’s ever-evolving game mechanics.

2. Persona 4 Golden

Best PS Vita games

Developer: Atlus
Released: 2011

This tremendous remake of the PS2 game was originally planned for PSP, but Atlas moved development to Sony’s new console and the end result is one of the system’s most engrossing games. Persona 4 was already a staggeringly deep experience on PS2, but this new Vita revision expands things dramatically with plenty of new content, including a brand-new character called Marie, as well as expanded storylines and social links and the introduction of new Personas, brand-new story elements and greatly enhanced visuals. Even without all these delicious extras Persona 4 is elevated to greatness thanks to its deep combat mechanics, wonderfully flexible gameplay, its unique dungeons, and exceptionally written characters who are as interesting as they are varied. Indeed, there’s so much going on in Atlus’ game that it’s easy to forget you’re supposed to be tracking down a serial killer.

1. Gravity Rush

Best PS Vita games

Developer: Japan Studio
Released: 2012

Few videogame superheroes express their available powers as well as the main protagonist of Japan Studio’s sensational action-adventure game. Kat has the power to manipulate gravity and while it takes a little while to master, you’ll soon feel invincible as you run along the sides of buildings, propel yourself at enemies and even master the power of flight. It creates a wonderful sense of freedom as you explore the breathtaking city of Hekseville and complete quests for its memorable NPCs while looking for the tucked-away gems that will expand Kat’s health and grant her new abilities. Not since Crackdown has the feeling of exploring presented so many rewards and it’s easy to lose focus from the main adventure as you explore Hekseville’s many nooks and crannies.

Japan Studio’s game is everything you want from a killer app: it offers stunning visuals, does a spectacular job of showcasing the PS Vita’s unique attributes, and is mechanically excellent. It’s quite simply the best experience you can have on Sony’s handheld.

The best GBA games are a window into a different era. The Game Boy Advance was a smart continuation of what Nintendo achieved with the Game Boy and Game Boy Color, transforming what we believed was possible with portable gaming. Unsurprisingly, Nintendo and its partners packed this console with some truly phenomenal experiences – the best Game Boy Advance games cover a wickedly wide range of genres.

Whether you were playing classic SNES games like Zelda: A Link to the Past, enjoying modern updates to legacy franchises such as a The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap and Metroid Fusion, or diving into legendary RPGs such as Golden Sun and Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire, this handheld really did have something for everybody. So keep on reading to find our pick of the 25 best GBA games of all-time.

Best GBA games, ranked

25. Double Dragon Advance

Best GBA games

Developer: Million
Released: 2003

Million’s remake of the classic arcade game is not only one of the best games in the series, but the best brawler on Nintendo’s handheld. While it includes overhauled versions of the original four stages of the arcade hit, it adds four more, greatly expanding the fun in the process. Combat mechanics are also expanded, with Million looking to later games in the series for inspiration and introducing new weapons to spice up the already robust gameplay. As with many scrolling fighters, Double Dragon Advance really comes alive with a second player, but considering the high price of the game nowadays that may be a little difficult to achieve.

24. Gunstar Future Heroes

Best GBA games

Developer: Treasure
Released: 2005

Treasure’s marvelous run-and-gun is as much a homage to classic Sega games of old as it is a revisit of the Mega Drive original. While its combat mechanics have been pared back somewhat, it still manages to offer plenty of tactical action as you switch between your available weapons and shoot your way through numerous levels, taking apart gigantic, often spectacular-looking bosses as you do so. Many of the levels will be instantly familiar to fans of the original game, but you’ll find plenty of new sections that reference a number of classic Sega hits, from After Burner to Thunder Blade. The only real criticism is that it’s painfully short with just six levels.

23. Kirby And The Amazing Mirror

Best GBA games

Developer: HAL Laboratory
Released: 2004

While Kirby’s original outing on the GBA was an enhanced remake of his first NES adventure, his second was a far more ambitious affair. Traveling through Mirror World is essentially like traversing a gigantic maze and Kirby will often have to call on three other Kirbies (via a cute mobile phone) in order to solve certain puzzles and continue his quest. It’s a neat idea, but it does admittedly work better when you team up with three other human opponents. Mechanically, it’s otherwise just like any other Kirby game, but it’s bolstered by its nods to the Metroidvania genre and some very entertaining mini-games.

22. Sonic Advance

Best GBA games

Developer: Dimps
Released: 2001

Sega’s hedgehog may have performed heresy by moving over to Nintendo’s handheld in the eyes of certain fans, but everyone else discovered that Sonic had lost none of his trademark speed or flair in the once unthought-of move. Dimps and Sonic Team’s platformer effortlessly recaptures the fast pace and clever level layouts of the earlier Mega Drive games, and there’s a tightness to the stages that aren’t found in the two sequels. Best of all, Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy Rose all play differently to each other, so you have plenty of reasons to return once you’ve completed its six zones.

21. Rhythm Tengoku

Best GBA games

Developer: Nintendo
Released: 2006

Nintendo’s last first-party GBA game never reached the west, but it’s an absolute blast to play that requires little knowledge of Japanese to enjoy. Like WarioWare it’s a collection of quirky mini-games with a unique visual style, but the focus of each crazy task is based on keeping your rhythm as much as possible. Mini-games range from punching objects to plucking whiskers from hairy vegetables and using sea animals to jump all the way to the moon. It’s utterly bonkers, but the tightly crafted controls and excellent tunes will cause your feet to tap as much as your fingers.

20. Harvest Moon: Friends Of Mineral Town

Best GBA games

Developer: Marvelous Interactive
Released: 2003

While they’re typically classed as RPGs, the Harvest Moon games are more about resource management and none will test your abilities as much as this one. It’s essentially a portable remake of the PlayStation game, Back To Nature and it’s a ruddy good one too. You quickly realize that the biggest challenge you face is time itself and it becomes a real task to tend your crops, feed your livestock and still find time to woo the girl of your dreams. A later release called Harvest Moon: More Friends Of Mineral Town also exists, but swaps the lead character for a female one.

19. F-Zero: Maximum Velocity

Best GBA games

Developer: Nintendo
Released: 2001

Although Nintendo’s console had a number of polygon-based racers in its later years, the games that attempted to replicate the Mode 7 stylings of the SNES fared best. Maximum Velocity is perfect proof of this, wowing gamers on launch with its slick racing and snazzy-looking tracks. While it’s set many years after the original game (meaning no regulars like Captain Falcon and Samurai Goroh) it retains the same mechanics, including progress-based speed boosts and F-Zero’s elimination-based format. It works perfectly and the end result is one of the best racers on the system. Two sequels followed, but both are prohibitively expensive, particularly the Japanese exclusive F-Zero: Climax.

18. Kuru Kuru Kururin

Best GBA games

Developer: Eighting
Released: 2001

Nintendo’s handheld was a great haven for puzzlers, but few will boil your blood like this maddeningly tricky gem from Eighting. Kururin’s brothers and sisters have gone missing and it’s down to the intrepid duck to leap into his helicopter and navigate some incredibly tricky levels in order to find his missing siblings. Unfortunately, many of the areas Kururin must enter leave little room for his helicopter blades so you need careful timing and deft manipulation of your speed to ensure Kururin doesn’t blunder into nearby walls. Sequels headed to both the GBA and GameCube, but unlike the original, they never left Japan.

17. Golden Sun

Best GBA games

Developer: Camelot
Released: 2001

Golden Sun and Golden Sun: The Lost Age Camelot’s stunning RPGs are so intertwined that they’re essentially two sides of the same coin, and both are truly fantastic RPGs. While the choices you make in your journey aren’t as impactful as Camelot would have you believe, there’s no denying the richness of the story or the many entertaining characters that you meet. Mechanically it’s excellent too, with combat revolving around the securing of the Pokémon-like Djinn, which you can find via exploration or besting them in battle and then use to enhance the combat prowess of your party. It’s all topped off by some of the finest pixel art to feature in any GBA game.

16. Drill Dozer

Best GBA games

Developer: Game Freak
Released: 2005

During the 2000s, Game Freak focused almost exclusively on Pokémon games, but it did find time to turn out this gem of a platformer. Coming across like a stylized manga, Drill Dozer works thanks to a sharp localization, challenging and exotic bosses, and inventive mechanics that revolve around the use of the titular drill that protagonist Jill uses. The GBA’s often forgotten rumble capabilities are cleverly used to highlight the intensity of your drill’s power, while the inventive level design and well-thought-out puzzles ensure you’ll always be finding new ways to get the most out of your hydraulic tool.

15. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2

Best GBA games

Developer: Neversoft
Released: 2001

It’s two decades on now and we’re still working out how Vicarious Visions pulled this off on Nintendo’s diminutive handheld. Yes there are obvious concessions (the licensed soundtracks are short instrumental renditions) and yes the dinky visuals can strain the eyes at times, but that doesn’t detract at all from the excellent pickup and play gameplay which is just as addictive here as it was on the bigger home console versions. Despite a new isometric viewpoint, all the original levels are perfectly captured and instantly recognizable. Mechanically it’s excellent too and while the move set has been dialed back a little, it remains just as enjoyable racking up insane scores.

14. Mario Vs Donkey Kong

Best GBA game

Developer: Nintendo
Released: 2004

This charming 2004 release is effectively a spiritual successor of the earlier 1994 Game Boy game, Donkey Kong. Many stages typically consist of Mario trying to retrieve a key to open a checkpoint and then rescue a stolen toy Mario against a strict time limit, but the plucky plumber also needs to guide the retrieved toy Marios to safety in a separate stage and then face an inventive battle against Donkey Kong. It’s a neat concept with a tremendous presentation that will test both your platforming skills as well as your old grey matter. Several sequels followed on later systems, but the original remains our favorite.

13. Metroid: Zero Mission

Best GBA games

Developer: Nintendo
Released: 2004

Alongside Capcom’s magnificent GameCube remake of Resident Evil, this remains one of the best remasters of the generation. Rather than simply remake the original NES classic (which is included as an unlockable extra), Nintendo R&D1 took the core of the pioneering 8-bit game and subtly retooled it. Samus’ journey is retold with brand-new cutscenes, while enhanced aesthetics greatly improve what was already a very atmospheric adventure. Best of all is that even when you get to the game’s end, Nintendo has one final trick up its sleeve, which allows you to experience Samus’ battle against the space pirates like never before.

12. Super Mario Advance 2: Super Mario World

Best GBA games

Developer: Nintendo
Released: 2001

While we like to keep lists like this to system exclusives, we’d be remiss if we didn’t celebrate a portable version of the greatest 2d platformer of all time. This is essentially the same slice of exceptional platforming excellence that appeared on the SNES but various tweaks have been made from brightening characters up to make them easier to see, to adding new Dragon Coins in stages that didn’t feature them originally. Oh, and Luigi is now a playable character as well. It’s not the most ambitious of updates, but as the recent Super Mario 3D All-Stars Switch collection proved, it’s very, very hard to improve on platform perfection.

11. Final Fantasy Tactics Advance

Best GBA games

Developer: Square
Released: 2003

It’s no word of a lie to admit we’ve put nearly 300 hours into Square’s superb strategy hit. Rather than acting as a straight sequel to the PlayStation original, Square’s portable isometric epic is a standalone story set in the world of Ivalice and features a bunch of young kids trying to find their way home. A gargantuan adventure resides within Square’s tiny cartridge and you’ll discover many enhancements over the original PlayStation hit, including a far bigger roster of jobs and enhanced mechanics for learning new abilities. The biggest (and many would say best) change is the introduction of Judges who make players follow strict new laws which can instantly turn the tide of battle.

10. Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire

Best GBA games

Developer: Game Freak
Released: 2002

While Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen are excellent Pokemon games in their own rights, we’ve somehow managed to clock up even more hours on this trilogy of RPGs. Many Pokemon aficionados weren’t happy with Game Freak’s decision to not import your earlier Pokemon (meaning this was the first time where you couldn’t actually catch ‘em all) but a new engine and not having to lean on the earlier games meant that the series could move in new directions, including adding dramatic new double battles and bestowing new Innate Abilities and Natures which further distinguished the cute critters you were feverishly trying to collect.

9. Mario Kart: Super Circuit

Best GBA games

Developer: Intelligent Systems
Released: 2001

While the pre-rendered graphical style hasn’t really stood the test of time, the polished karting mechanics absolutely have. The beauty of Nintendo’s portable racer is that it doesn’t attempt to reinvent the wheel, but simply builds on the two games that proceeded it. You won’t find new power-ups or new characters, but you will discover 20 brilliantly designed tracks, challenging difficulty levels, and some excellent multiplayer options. In a slice of genius, it also allows you to unlock the 20 tracks of Super Mario Kart, a move that proved to be so popular, the franchise continues to revisit classic tracks to this day.

8. Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade

Best GBA games

Developer: Intelligent Systems
Released: 2003

This is actually the seventh entry in Intelligent Systems’ tremendous strategy series and it serves as an excellent introduction to the highly-regarded franchise. Like its strategy stablemate Advance Wars, Fire Emblem looks cute on the surface, but is actually a resoundingly tough game, thanks to its challenging AI, exceptionally designed maps, and triangle weapon system that powers each combat encounter. Things are further complicated by you permanently losing members as they fall in battle, which is doubly impactful as the strong writing and engaging personalities make each character easy to connect with. The follow-up Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones is equally worthy of your time and cash.

7. Astro Boy: Omega Factor

Best GBA games

Developer: Teasure
Released: 2003

Treasure and Hitmakers wonderfully chaotic collaboration is not only a love letter to Osamu Tezuka’s classic manga series but also serves as an overview of his entire canon of work. At its core Omega Factor is a beat-’em-up, but it’s one that prides itself on dishing out as much damage as possible so you can quickly build up Astro Boy’s EX gauge and flatten your foes with outrageous special attacks. It’s a truly marvelous game, which is enhanced further by technically outrageous boss encounters, a surprisingly strong storyline, and light platform and shooting sections that nicely highlight Treasure’s technical wizardry.

6. Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga

Best GBA games

Developer: AlphaDream
Released: 2003

The GBA certainly isn’t shortchanged in the RPG department, but few hold a candle to this wonderfully witty adventure. While the outrageously funny story will hold your attention, it’s the finely crafted combat mechanics that make AlphaDream’s adventure so much fun to play. The flow of battle will be instantly familiar to anyone who has experienced Mario’s earlier RPGs, but fights are cleverly enhanced by the inclusion of Luigi. This brotherly love extends to the rest of the game too and the pair have a number of special moves that will enable them to navigate BeanBean Kingdom in their mission to rescue Princess Peach.

5. Castlevania: Aria Of Sorrow

Best GBA games

Developer: Konami
Released: 2003

All three GBA Castlevania games deserve to be in your collection, but if you can only choose one then hunt down Sorrow. It’s not only the most aesthetically pleasing of the three games but is mechanically rich thanks to the brand-new Tactical Soul system that allows you to absorb the souls of defeated foes and use them to enhance the skills of protagonist Soma Cruz. You won’t find an inverse castle here, but you will discover spectacular bosses, an excellent soundtrack, and a silly amount of weaponry to experiment with. Soma’s adventures continue with Dawn Of Sorrow on the DS.

4. WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgames!

Best GBA games

Developer: Nintendo
Released: 2003

Few games reach the absurd heights of silliness that this collection of potty mini-games manages to achieve. The brilliance of Wario Ware Inc stems from its sheer accessibility and simple control system – you’re typically given a single word instruction and then a few seconds to achieve the required absurd task, which can range from balancing a set of tiles while riding a unicycle to sniffing a bogey back into a girl’s nose. Over 200 absurd games are spread across nine themed levels, including a stage celebrating classic Nintendo franchises, and the entire package is held together by a very abstract art style that elevates Nintendo’s game to even higher levels of weirdness.

3. Advance Wars

Best GBA games

Developer: Intelligent Systems
Released: 2001

Although the lineage of Intelligent Systems’ series can be traced back to the Famicom, Nintendo’s portable system feels like its true home. The diminutive troops and vehicles may make Intelligent System’s game look cute, but they’re simply a jolly front for some incredibly complex maps that will take a real tactical genius to master. Luckily the task becomes a lot easier thanks to a selection of commanders who are full of character and boast unique powers to master. Even when you’ve completed the lengthy campaign, the war is far from over and the engaging multiplayer maps will keep you playing till your batteries run out. The sequel (Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising) released in 2003 and continues the first game’s story – and it is equally great, introducing eight more commanders, new powers, a brand-new Neotank, and numerous other quality of life tweaks.

2. The Legend Of Zelda: The Minish Cap

Best GBA games

Developer: Capcom
Released: 2004

While it lacks the guiding touch of Eiji Aonuma who has been shepherding the series since Ocarina Of Time, The Minish Cap still feels like a traditional Zelda game. Flagship had already done fine work with the Oracle series on the Game Boy Color, and The Minish Cap builds upon those strengths by improving elements like dungeon design and giving Link brand-new sword techniques to master. The masterstroke of The Minish Cap however is Link’s new ability to shrink down in size, which greatly improves the puzzle aspects of the series because you need to flip back and forth between forms to find new routes and solve various tasks. Ezlo, the game’s titular talking hat is also a great addition, with his acerbic comments providing plenty of humor as you navigate Flagship’s ambitiously designed world. Handheld Zelda games don’t get much better than this.

1. Metroid Fusion

Best GBA games

Developer: Nintendo
Released: 2002

Many expected Super Metroid to be converted to Nintendo’s portable 32-bit powerhouse like past Super Mario games had been, but series stalwart Yoshio Sakamoto had other plans. Metroid Fusion is the result and it’s a fantastic adventure that takes the series in interesting new directions. While it doesn’t offer the same level of freedom as its older siblings, its more linear structure leads to a far stronger narrative than earlier Metroid games and explores Samus’ personality in a way that the later games would embrace. Its other strength is the introduction of Samus’ nemesis SA-X, a deadly parasite formed from her old Power Suit. Samus herself is trying to regain her lost powers, meaning she’s constantly stalked by a far more powerful foe. It’s a deadly game of cat and mouse which is enhanced by the game’s atmospheric visuals and the claustrophobic nature of the GBA’s small screen. It’s quite simply the best game you can experience on Nintendo’s handheld.

Obviously, don’t get yourself in trouble, but do enjoy trying this list of the best movie drinking games. If the pandemic taught us anything it was how to have fun indoors, and nothing says party like tequila shots and Independence Day.

The rules are fairly simple for cinematic soirées (drink whenever ‘this’ or ‘that’ happens on screen), but they naturally vary with each round, depending on which movie you’ve decided to whack on the telly. Have a swig every time a zombie bites it in Zombielandor take a tipple every time someone says, “Mr President” in Independence Day. Only the very best movie drinking games have made it onto our list below.

You’ll find some of these in our best Netflix movies (opens in new tab) list.
And some on our
best Amazon Prime Video movies (opens in new tab) list.

25. Anchorman (2004)

The movie: Will Ferrell stars as the mustachioed broadcaster living it up as the network’s main attraction, only to get shafted when he’s lumbered with a female co-host in the form of Christina Applegate’s Veronica Corningstone.

Take a drink when: Ron addresses San Diego or makes a bizarre exclamation (i.e. “By the beard of Zeus!”). Brick Tamland says something stupid. An Apatow favourite makes a cameo.

Watch Anchorman now on Amazon Prime Video (opens in new tab)

24. Zombieland (2009)

The movie: This horror comedy takes place in a post-apocalyptic world – it’s there in the title, isn’t it? The nifty part is that the undead have been roaming for a while when we meet Jesse Eisenberg’s survivor, who tells us – via amusing onscreen captions – of certain rules he has to stay alive.

Take a drink when: A rule comes up on screen. Somebody uses a place as a character name. Twinkies are talked about. Tallahassee kills a zombie.

Watch Zombieland now on Amazon Prime Video (opens in new tab)

23. Top Gun (1986)

The movie: ’80s action classic starring Tom Cruise as a rebellious fighter pilot, Maverick, who goes up against the oppression of… err… those who don’t like really really fast planes? There’s shirtless volleyball too.

Take a drink when: There’s a homoerotic look shared between characters. Characters high five. Maverick goes against the rules. The song ‘Danger Zone’ plays.

Watch Top Gun now on Amazon Prime Video (opens in new tab)

22. Scream (1996)

The movie: The best slasher flick of the ’90s, starring Neve Campbell as the target of a movie-loving psychopath. Both witty and scary, it launched the careers of its young cast and schooled a generation on horror movie trivia.

Take a drink when: Someone references another horror movie. A phone rings. Gale Weathers makes a bitchy remark to her cameraman. Ghostface appears.

Watch Scream now on Amazon Prime Video (opens in new tab)

21. The Hangover (2009)

The movie: A group of pals on a ker-azy stag party (Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis, Ed Helms) wake up in Vegas the next morning, but can’t remember anything about the previous night. They probably played too many movie drinking games.

Take a drink when: Stu touches his missing tooth or mentions it. Someone says remember. You see a Vegas landmark. Alan copies Phil.

Watch The Hangover now on Amazon Prime Video (opens in new tab)

20. Zoolander (2001)

The movie: Ben Stiller stars as quite possibly the stupidest man alive, Derek Zoolander. A model with looks that could kill, he becomes embroiled in a bizarre plot where only models can save the world.

Take a drink when: Zoolander does the face. There’s a celebrity cameo. Will Ferrell looks like his dog. Somebody says ‘Blue Steel’.

Watch Zoolander now on Amazon Prime Video (opens in new tab)

19. A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

The movie: Freddy Krueger haunts the dreams of the Elm Street children, whose parents fried him to death when they were youngsters. The plot unravels through the experiences of Nancy, a teenager and Freddy’s main target. He’ll do anything to get her – even turn himself into a… err… phone handset.

Take a drink when: You’re not sure if somebody is awake or dreaming. Freddy Krueger’s on screen. You see Nancy’s house from the outside. Horror legend John Saxon appears.

Watch A Nightmare on Elm Street now on Amazon Prime Video (opens in new tab)

18. The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)

The movie: In his most recent collaboration with Martin Scorsese (ignoring that weird casino commercial), DiCaprio plays real-life stock market sleaze Jordan Belfort – a man who will stoop low to go high. By that I mean, get high.

Take a drink when: Someone says fuck. Anyone snorts anything. Something ridiculously decadent and hedonistic happens.

Watch The Wolf of Wall Street now on Amazon Prime Video (opens in new tab)

17. Gremlins (1984)

The movie: A small American town is overrun with horrible little beasties who turn Christmas into a nightmare, particularly for Zach Galligan’s teenager.

Take a drink when: A gremlin is killed. Gizmo does something cute. Gizmo gets tortured. The gremlins do something crazy.

Watch Gremlins now on Amazon Prime Video (opens in new tab)

16. Die Hard (1988)

The movie: Coolest action movie ever made? Probably. Bruce Willis stars as a cop who’s trapped in a building with 12 terrorists at Christmas time. He’s the only thing stopping them from delivering more than presents…

Take a drink when: Anyone uses a radio or walkie-talkie to communicate. McClane kills a bad guy. There’s a Christmas reference. McClane talks to himself.

Watch Die Hard now on Amazon Prime Video (opens in new tab)

There’s no shortage of Fallout: New Vegas character builds out there. Developer Obsidian Games built the Fallout New Vegas character creator to be relatively open, offering a handful of basic archetypes before giving you the freedom to create a near-endless set of variations to let you play how you want to play. We’ve compiled some of our favorite Fallout New Vegas character builds to help you get started, optimized to fulfil the roles you’d typically see in RPGs.

You should treat these Fallout New Vegas character builds as starting points for your adventure, and feel emboldened to tweak them as you gravitate towards different weapons and fighting styles. For example, you might want to use the Energy Weapons build as the baseline for a Sharpshooter-style experience, swapping out the electric guns for more conventional ballistic weapons as you go. Same goes for the Perks we’ve selected for each of these Fallout New Vegas character builds, you should switch and swap these out to dial in even more possibilities out of your character.

Whether you’re returning for another adventure or coming in for your first (it is one of the best games on Xbox Game Pass, after all) keep scrolling for our pick of the best Fallout: New Vegas character builds to help get you started.

Melee Warrior build

Fallout New Vegas

A melee character is definitely a heck of a challenge in the Fallout games. Many of the enemies are stronger and more dangerous in melee than you are, so it’s a risk every time you get near them; also, Deathclaws. The hard part to a melee character is that you must wear light armor if you wish to close in on enemies fast enough that their guns won’t tear you to shreds but when forced into a heads up battle against multiple foes with guns light armor won’t help you too much.

Playing this character can be somewhat difficult if you’re not good at the game. You’re going to need to use strong weapons, target enemies vital points and then slice away at them. Since VATs only allows you to target the enemy in general you’ll need to do things manually. Aim for enemy limbs or their head when slicing away so as to hamper their ability to fight back. When fighting other melee opponents be sure to use VATs since those attacks are unblockable and be sure to block often.

How to play a melee build

With this build we’re doing our best to do as much damage to enemies as quickly as possible. Most of the Perks we’re taking are giving us damage bonuses against particular types of enemies: Hunter and Entomologist will grant you damage bonuses on animals, notably against Geckos and Cazadors. Perks like Black Widow / Lady Killer and Cherchez la Femme / Confirmed Bachelor as well as Bloody Mess and Living Anatomy will get you up a very nice damage bonus against all humanoids.

The rest of the perks will grant you bonuses to damage or help you with penetrating enemy Damage Thresholds. Travel Light and Silent Running will make getting the jump on enemies a whole lot easier. When paired up with Heavy Hitter and Kamikaze you can easily get the jump on an enemy, hit them for a Sneak Attack critical and then use VATs to murder the crap out of them before they can fight back.

Partners

Since you’ll be in melee, Rex is somewhat redundant so you’ll want Ed-E instead. As for your humanoid companion, Boone is one of the best; his incredible sniper abilities will compliment you well. However going with Arcade Gannon will grant you extra healing from all sources (always helpful) and Raul the Ghoul will ensure that you spend less time worrying about equipment maintenance. Choose wisely.

Close-combat build

Fallout New Vegas

For when using a melee weapon is just too safe there’s also the obligatory hand to hand combat route. The thing that makes unarmed combat so tricky is the fact that when using your bare hands you don’t do much damage at all. Getting your hands on Spiked Knuckles will set you down the path to actually dealing appreciable damage with your attacks. It’s very important that you upgrade to a better weapon as soon as possible.

It’s actually a good deal more important to play things sneaky with this build than it is with the melee build. With the melee build you can actually deal some rather impressive damage with the right weapons. But it takes a good long while into the game to get weapons that deal enough damage to be helpful to an unarmed build. Sneak up on enemies to put the hurt on them, especially once you start unlocking the special unarmed attacks (unlocked at skill ranking 25 and 50).

How to play close-combat build

While increasing the three Tagged Skills, especially Unarmed and Sneak, you will also want to increase Speech. There are a few areas where you can talk your way out of fighting entirely which is very helpful during any unarmed playthrough. Much like the melee build we have mostly focused on taking the perks that will enable us to deal more damage with our hand-to-hand attacks to kill enemies before they deal too much damage.

To maximize the effectiveness of this build you will absolutely want to complete a few side quests and associate with a few followers in particular. Ranger Andy in Novac can be talked into teaching you a NCR Ranger power move that is very helpful, if you give your follower Veronica a dress of any sort she will teach you a counter attack, complete the side quest: Aba Daba Honeymoon to learn a nasty Khan trick, and if you’re siding with them, Lucius of Ceasar’s Legion can teach you another nasty attack.

Partners

Ally with Boone and Ed-E as quickly as possible and stick with them. Get Boone some good weapons and armor and he will keep you covered from a range when a fight breaks out, weakening or killing enemies for you. While Gannon can help keep you healed, you’ll reallyneedBoone’s extra damage dealing talents here.

Sniper build

Fallout New Vegas

To be frank, a sniper is probably one of the easiest ways to play through Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas. You will rely heavily on VATs for the earlier portion of the game, but with the right guns this can be incredibly deadly. Later on, when you have a good sniper rifle, you can use that to take shots on the enemies from far away without needing to use VATs quite as much. VATs is a death sentence for your enemies by level 12 – 14, since the repeated, very accurate, headshots will kill most foes in no time.

With this build you’ll find that it’s very important to carry around a few separate weapons. A Sniper Rifle helps with extreme range shots although these wear down easily, so using them for close encounters is a bad idea. Cowboy Repeaters are very strong, fire quickly and are all around a great weapon to carry for mid to long range encounters. Lastly if you’d like to keep a holdout weapon like a Silenced Pistol / SMG or an overly powerful sidearm like a Hunting Revolver, then do so for close range combat.

How to play sniper build

Where the previous builds focused on increasing your damage against every type of enemy in the game, this build instead focuses on making each shot as deadly as possible. By sneaking up on foes for a close range series of VATs headshots you can take down even the toughest of enemies in rather short order. Early on this build is somewhat weaker because of this, but as the game progresses they slowly begin to utterly dominate combat until most enemies pose little to no threat.

One of the things to note about sneak heavy builds like this one is that when you’re out in the wilderness it’s hard to sneak around and move in any sort of timely manner. Even with Silent Running you’re still moving rather slowly. As such it’s best to keep Ed-E around so he warns you of any enemies before they even notice you allowing you time to enter sneak mode to go after them or avoid them. With this character type your equipment becomes incredibly important.

Partners

Since you’ve got the long ranged combat covered, you have a few options. Bringing Rex is better for helping you in combat but Ed-E’s increased sensors will help you know when enemies are around. The same goes for your human companions: bringing a melee fighter like Veronica or Lily is probably best for helping you with actual combat but by picking a ranged fighter, like Boone, enemies can be cut down long before they get anywhere near you. Pick whatever suits your fighting style, so if you bring Rex then it’s best to bring Veronica or Lily and let Boone compliment Ed-E.

Tank build

Fallout New Vegas

Since you’re almost always going to be burdened down with lots of weapons and equipment, this guy is going to need to be tough but still able to use his guns. He’ll require a good deal of strength, endurance and perception to be able to function properly. First and foremost you’re going to need to aim for the best weapons and armor that you can possibly get your hands on.

When creating the character decide what sort of guns you’re going to use. If you want to use mini-guns and machine guns take Guns, but if you want to use flamers and gatling lasers take Energy Weapon. Your ultimate goal is to get your hands on some Brotherhood Power Armor and the biggest, loudest weapon you can get your hands on.

How to play a tank build

Your perk progression here is heavily dependant upon how you’re going to play the game. If you are planning on using lasers then you’ll find Vigilant Recycler, Tag! Science, Meltdown and Laser Commander to be the most helpful. If you’re going to put a lot of effort into using Explosives, then take Hit the Deck and Splash Damage to tear through enemy offensives. But you’ll have to be careful because you will be prone to running out of ammo if you aren’t making good use of multiple skills. For example you can use Guns and Explosives (Rocket Launchers and Grenade Launchers) or abuse the crap out of a variety of Energy Weapons (even Flamers).

Even if you’re not planning on using too many explosives you’ll still want to put a good bit into the Explosives skill. Dealing with melee enemies will be made much easier indoors by using frag mines to line a path. This will prevent enemies from rushing you or in the least leave them entirely crippled by the time they reach you. Sneaking around with a Stealth Boy and laying down some mines can do amazing things.

Since you’re going to have to load up on weapons and armor you’ll want to do your best to minimize whatever else you’re carrying. By eliminating the need to carry Rad items you can sell these to fund your bullet addictions, Solar Powered will let you heal naturally while hiking through the Wasteland, Scrounger will net you lots of spare ammo you can sell for money / other ammunition and Strong Back helps you carry everything.

Partners

While you would normally want to have some close combat allies to back you up here it’s an incredibly bad idea here. This build can tear your followers to pieces if they aren’t careful. Instead, take Ed-E as well as a ranged human companion. While you will be vulnerable to enemies who rush you, like Nightkin, most enemies will be shredded by the fusillade of bullets they will face in coming at you.

Laser Gunner build

Fallout New Vegas

The Laser Gunner is probably one of the most powerful attackers in the game. A talented Energy Weapon user will absolutely shred through enemies, dealing more damage than a close range shotgun blast at extreme ranges with the right weapons. Plus it seems to have a fairly easy job of blowing through armor which will help you deal with the heavily armored troops that are running around in the late game.

With this in mind your primary focus is going to be on hitting enemies and hitting them in the vitals. Enemies die rather easily to laser weapons so you don’t have to put too much work into killing enemies just so long as you can actually hit them. Early on it’s in your best interest to stay close to enemies and bean them with shots to their limbs. Take out the legs of melee enemies while trying to injure the arms of ranged attackers to disarm them. Later on though you can just aim for enemies heads and absolutely decimate foes.

How to play Laser Gunner build

Pretty much the entire purpose of the perks for this character build are basically taken around two basic ideas: keeping your equipment at top functionality and inflicting lots of damage with your lasers. Vigilant Recycler and Scrounger will keep your ammo supplies fairly high while Jury Rigging will help keep your guns in top functionality. Most of the other perks that you’re taking will help you slaughter your enemies with devastating VATs attacks that will blow through enemy defenses.

In many ways this build works quite functionally like the Sniper build does with the main exception of this being a good deal more devastating. You’ll have a pretty easy time beaning enemies in the face with your laser blasts and they won’t survive too many of those as you get more and more deadly perks. If you can get your hands on a Gauss Rifle and pair it up with these perks then most enemies will be blown away easily, while the corona effect of Meltdown helps you kill off other enemies.

Partners

With this build it’s quite easy to completely recommend Rex as your back up with this build. He will close to melee range and tear enemies up while you take shots at them from a distance. As for your human companion you can either take Cass along, since she can do melee reasonably well but also shoot if you don’t want her in melee, or Lily since she can tear through enemies like a hot knife through butter.

Non-violent build

Fallout New Vegas

Every now and again it’s fun to just want play a character that is about as non-violent as possible. Oh sure, it might not have the charm of finishing every battle with a slo-mo decapitation due to a shotgun blast to the face, but there’s something special about conning people out of their money or seducing everything on two legs. If you really want to experience all of the dialogue in the game this is the build for you.

Just remember that some of the dialogue trees will require certain skills at particular levels. So if you want to convince someone to hand over some explosives you’ll have to have a fairly high Explosives rating to talk them into it. As such it may be to your advantage to play through the game once, beating down all enemies in your path, and taking note of what skills you require in each conversation. Then simply raise up your stats to meet the requirements for each conversation and talk your way through life.

How to play non-violent build

The main purpose of this build is to enable you to use basically every single dialogue option you can during the course of the game. If you can seduce someone into siding with you, use your speech to convince someone to pay you more caps and Terrifying Presence will let you intimidate your way through many encounters. Last but not least Animal Friend at Rank 2 will make the animals in the Wasteland take your side, acting as body shields against Deathclaws or Raiders.

For the rest of your perks it’s in your best interest to fixate completely on perks that will boost up the weapon skill of your choice. Consult the other various builds here to find out what perks can help you with each weapon type and then just focus entirely on that. It’s very possible to make, for example, a chatty negotiator who picks up some Brotherhood Power Armor and a Super Sledge when it comes time to bash in some faces.

Stealth build

Fallout New Vegas

A build like this has one purpose and one purpose alone: to get into places nobody wanted you to get. Stealing things, sneaking up on enemies for criticals or just using your stealth to assassinate the crap out of your enemies are just secondary to getting where you’re not supposed to be. It’s actually possible with a talented enough build to get into enemy compounds, complete your objective and then get out without killing any enemies.

When it comes to actually fighting enemies you’ve got a few options. If you choose to go melee you can sneak up on enemies and chop at a vulnerable spot, like their legs. With guns you can just shoot them in the back of the head with a silenced weapon to take them out quickly. But really if you’re going sneaky you might as well enjoy it – get your hands on as many explosive munitions as you can. Set mines in the path of enemies, plop ticking explosives into an enemy’s pocket and just generally blow them to pieces.

How to play Stealth Build

Taking a look at this build you can clearly see one of the primary purposes of the perks: making you an absolute beast at night. Friend of the Night makes it easier for you to see during the nighttime hours which are when you should be actively moving around the Wasteland or dungeons. Night Person will help you with this as well by making it easier for you to detect enemies and shoot them from a good distance or sneak past them.

Other than that you’re basically focusing on making sure you character excels at using his small gun to destroy enemies. Sneaking up on enemies with the Silenced Sub-Machine Gun can do wonderful things especially if you’re capable of landing critical hits with any reliability. That and making sure that using your explosives will utterly devastate every enemy you hit, notably when you’re using mines.

Travel Light and Silent Running will make it much easier for you to get around the world. Since you’ll be wearing light armor most of the time anyways Travel Light will help you move around rapidly. When Travel Light is paired up with Silent Running this will allow you to move around rapidly while making no sound which makes it easier to get past enemies without having to even bother fighting them.

Partners

Since you’ll be rolling solo so much in order to stay hidden, a character with a passive ability outside of combat like Arcade or Raul works well.

Hardcore build

Fallout New Vegas

This is a build meant to ease the burden of playing on Hardcore mode. There is an achievement / trophy wrapped up in completing it so this should help out. Note that you don’t need a build particularly suited to playing on Hardcore difficulty, you just need to play a bit smarter, but this will make it a whole lot less painful.

The main point of this build is to make you mostly dependant on yourself. With a high Survival you can hunt animals and turn them into better food at campsites which removes your need to carry quite as much food. Pick between Guns and Energy Weapons as your primary source of offense as melee combat is a bit too dangerous. Lastly you’ll want Barter so that when you bring all those animal skins and looted equipment back to town you can buy enough stuff to resupply for another trip into the Wasteland.

  • Strong Back
  • Animal Friend (Should take 2 Ranks)
  • Adamantium Skeleton
  • Jury Rigging
  • Tag! (Repair)
  • Solar Powered
  • Spray and Pray

How to play in Hardcore mode

This is probably one of the most fun character types to play as you really feel like you’re living the life of a Mojave Wastelander. Each Perk fills a particular niche: Hunter makes it easier to get food by killing enemies, Educated gives extra skill points and so on. The most important ones are probably Pack Rat and Strong Back as these let you carry extra weight. Also having Adamantium Skeleton makes it so that you need less limb recovery. Lastly once you have Solar Powered you will need less healing items during the day.

Since ammunition has weight in Hardcore mode you’ll want to approach this in a more intelligent manner. Break down as much of your ammunition as you like into its components and sell everything else. Only ever keep one or two types of ammunition on you for very particular weapons. Carrying .308 and .357 rounds for a Hunting / Sniper Rifle and a Cowboy Repeater isn’t a bad idea.

For this reason going with Energy Weapons is almost suggested more than regular guns. Since there are only three or so types of ammunition for energy weapons you can carry two or three different guns but only need to worry about a few different types of ammo.

Regardless of how you do it, it’s suggested that you keep each weapon stocked with a different type of ammo. So keep your rapid fire weapons stocked with basic ammo, your sniper weapon stocked with Hollow Points if going for head shots or armor penetrators / Max Charge if going for body shots and keep your close range weapons stocked with armor penetrators / Overcharge. This allows you to change guns to suit each situation you end up in while also automatically equipping the ammo that best helps in said situation.

Ultimate starting build

Fallout New Vegas

This one is called the “ultimate” starting build because it gives you a whole hell of a lot of benefits early on in the game. Very few of the other builds are going to be as well rounded as this one due to how the game works. If you’re not exactly excited about playing with these stats / tagged skills then all you have to do is re-spec your character when you go to leave Goodsprings as these three skills are basically designed to let you fully complete all of the missions in Goodsprings before moving on.

The main point of this build is that with the super high Intelligence. This will give you a lot of skill points to distribute for the first few levels you can gain during the prologue part of the game. If you level up twice you can gain 30 skill points before leaving the first town so you can raise up three skills rather significantly or just boost a whole bunch of others. Taking Swift Learner speeds this up immensely and allows you to more or less max out your character in rather short order.

There is only one thing to be aware of – many perks ask for 6’s or 7’s in particular SPECIAL traits. You can use the Intense Training perk to meet these requirements but this should be done sparingly. Instead it’s heavily suggested you find all of the snow globes, trade them in to Mr. House and use that money to purchase Implants at the New Vegas Medical Center for about 4,000 caps a piece. If you still don’t meet the requirements to take a perk then you can consider taking Intense Training.

Perks

There are no real set perks for this build. Instead you should look at the perks for the type of character you want to play and use those as a suggested list. So if you wanted to play a sniper you would take from that list or if you wanted to play a more talkative type you would take from the Wasteland Negotiator build. As your SPECIAL stats aren’t as important as your skill levels you can basically play whatever character you want with this starting build with no difficulty. This goes double for your partners – take the ones that compliment your skill build.

The only real suggestions are Retention, Comprehension and Educated. By taking these two perks you will be able to make very good use of the skill books in the game, allowing them to last for a good, long time and making them incredibly powerful. Using these will allow you to fill in any gaps in your skills as well as making you very powerful in and out of combat.

Also you might want to consider taking Nerd Rage if you’re planning on making a melee character as that skill is ridiculously powerful. This and a few other changes can make for some very powerful melee character. Take Nerd Rage, Chemist and Chem Resistant and then go into melee with some Buffout, Med-X and Psycho when your health is below 50% and just watch as you tear through enemies with your nerd monster.

Having a Batman: Arkham Knight Riddler guide to hand is essential if you want to 100% complete the game, because there’s a whopping 243 Riddler puzzles to solve and that’s a massive challenge to take on solo. While being part of the PS Plus Collection games means that PS5 owners can easily check out the finale to Rocksteady’s Arkham trilogy, there will players on all formats who still have these puzzles outstanding as the Riddler challenges really are tough!

Edward Nigma has been busy once again setting up puzzles all over the city, and if you’re a completionist then you’ll naturally want to complete them all, so we’re here to help you out with a complete Batman: Arkham Knight Riddler guide. Remember that some trophies will be unavailable until later in the story, and many of them will require Batman’s more advanced gadgets to retrieve, so it’s recommended that you complete a decent amount of the story before you start chasing them down in earnest. We start with Bleake Island below, before moving on to the other areas around Gotham.

Bleake Island Riddles

“Joining your mission can come with a cost, this empty reminder shows just what she lost.”

Head to the Clock Tower and activate Barbara’s computer. Look for a console along the wall and use the Remote Hacking Device on it to reveal her Batgirl suit. Scan this to solve the riddle.

“A souvenir from a previous life, why hold with a hand when a hook will suffice?”

Solved within the GCPD Lockup. Scan the Arkham mug at the main desk by Cash.

“Bones stripped bare beneath a warning light, pay heed, seafarers and feel his bite.”

To solve this, you’ll have to head to the lone tower east of Ace Chemical. Look inside and scan the abandoned cage.

“An open house for bed and dinner, is this sanctuary run by saint or sinner?”

In the northernmost corner of the island, check the storefronts until you find The Deacon’s Mission. Scan the sign to solve.

“Always looking for names to besmirch, where does this newsman conduct his research?”

Another one inside the GCPD Lockup. Jack Ryder sits in the Interview Room; scan him to solve this.

“Overgrown, abandoned, the inmates set free, madness could never be held in me.”

To solve this, you’ll need to scan Arkham Asylum, but finding it is tricky. Head to the western edge of the Falcone Shipping Antenna and zoom in while looking across the water to spot it.

“Hope shines brightly in a city this dark, find the source of that signal and you’ll soon hit your mark.”

Go to the roof of the GCPD Lockup, then find the corner tower with the Bat-Signal spotlight on it and scan to solve.

“A bat uses these to see at night, the doc’s didn’t work and his cure caused a fright.”

Solved in Dr. Langstrom’s lab. Once you start the Man-Bat mission, you’ll be sent here. Scan the drawing on his whiteboard.

“I bet you weren’t invited to this lavish do, I wonder how many went dress up as you?”

This is found inside the Clock Tower. Bust through the east-facing windows and head to the top floor. Check by the elevator shaft for this masquerade ball advertisement and scan it.

“She stands at our center that we may not weaken, a symbol of hope, a towering beacon.”

This is an easy one. Glide to the tiny island in the center of the three main ones. Scan the large statue to solve.

Bleake Island Trophies

GCPD Lockup

Check by the main desk in the Evidence Room to find this inside a case.

Urbarail bridge near GCPD Lockup

Northeast of the GCPD Lockup, find this bridge with a video advertising board on it, then grapple up to the bridge platform and look in the nearby control room to find this.

Under Urbarail bridge near GCPD Lockup

Just under the very same control room is a Riddler puzzle. Hit the Riddler switch with your Batarang to step inside, then use the Batmobile’s remote function and winch to move the walls out of your way.

Kord Industries

This is found in the central part of the Kord Industries plaza. Look up to find a destructible wall, and blast it away with the Batmobile’s cannon. Use the Batclaw to grab the trophy hanging on the other side.

Kord Industries

On the eastern tower of the Kord plaza is another trophy, but you’ll have to travel to Miagani Island to free it from its cage. Drive to the bridge on the southern end to find a panel you can charge up with the Batmobile’s winch. This will start a timer on the trophy’s cage. Floor it back to Bleake Island, then launch yourself and grapple up to the trophy before time expires.

Panessa Studios

Get on to the roof of Panessa Studios proper, then either drop through the broken skylights or head down the stairs from the helipad to enter an interior corridor, before crouching through the open vent to enter a backstage area where this trophy waits.

Panessa Studios

Check near the northwestern wall of the main building to find a large pressure pad. Drive the Batmobile onto this to activate some Riddler switches on the wall nearby. Shoot each one as it appears to open the lock in the center, then grab the trophy using your Batclaw.

Panessa Studios

This is smack dab in the middle of the parking lot, atop a tower lined with Riddler switches. To get at them, you’ll need to latch onto the tower base with the Batmobile’s winch and rotate the glass until the windows give you access. Hit all three switches to lower the tower and free the trophy.

Panessa Studios

Follow the path to the studio rooftop – the same one you used when you first got the Batmobile’s winch. Once up here, activate the Forensic Scanner near the green panel. This will make Riddler symbols appear on the ground. Follow them as they appear to be led through a sewer to the canal at Dixon Dock West. Look up to spot another panel under an overpass. Blast this open and use the Batclaw to fetch the trophy inside.

Panessa Studios

Check the studio rooftop for a Riddler bot standing near two switches. Use the Voice Synthesizer to order him onto one switch, then step on the other to free the trophy up for the Batclaw.

Panessa Studios

Check the back wall of the northernmost building on the lot to find a weak spot. Blow through it then grapple into the alcove to find this.

Panessa Studios

Check the roof of the same building for another weak spot. You’ll have to navigate the Batmobile up here to blow up this one, though: use the same course as when you first receive the winch during the story.

Panessa Studios

Now check the rooftop nearest Merchant Bridge. There’s a spot to jack in the Batmobile’s winch and charge up via the engine. Do this to create a new waypoint a good distance away. A timer starts, so gun it to this new location in Chinatown and quickly grapple to the marked rooftop to grab the trophy before it gets locked away again.

Panessa Studios

Check by the ledge at the northern end of the lighthouse hill to find this in a little shed.

Panessa Studios

Just south of the lighthouse is one of Riddler’s puzzles. This one is a bit tricky. First, use the Batmobile winch to pull out a concrete slat. Hop out, apply some Explosive Gel, hop back in, and return the slat to its original position. Detonate the gel to destroy a pump inside, clearing out the harmful steam at the end of tunnel. Now pull the slat back out of the way, and do a running slide through the small opening, past the shut-off valves, and into the container. The trophy is all yours!

Panessa Studios

Just south of the previous trophy is another puzzle, down in a ditch. This one works a bit like pinball. Use the winch to pull back and release the block to launch the trophy ball. A few launches will get it into the prize slot, where you can pick it up.

Merchant Bridge

There’s a small building below Merchant Bridge. Drop down to find a trophy by a beach chair on the roof.

Falcone Shipping Antenna

Check the southern edge of the facility to find another puzzle. Use the Batmobile winch to pull the train forward, taking it off a grate. Head back there and slip into the grate to find a trophy underneath.

Warehouse near Mercy Bridge

Check just on the east side of the Bleake Island side to find a Riddler puzzle inside a warehouse. This is one is kinda tough. First use the Batmobile winch to pull down the wall of questions marks. Next, you need to shoot each one as it passes under the rings along the wall. It may take a few tries – make sure you hit the center mark last – but doing so will net you another trophy.

Near Ace Chemical Bridge

There’s a weak wall just a bit higher up from the warehouse you just entered. Bust through with the Batmobile’s cannon to find this on the other side.

Near Ace Chemical Bridge

There’s a Riddler puzzle just east of the Chinatown side of the bridge. Grapple up there to find a Riddler bot, a cage, and an electrified floor. Use the Voice Synthesizer to command the bot across the floor, bringing the trophy to you.

Ace Chemical Bridge

If you actually head out on the broken bridge, you can find a small structure underneath towards the end. Grapple to the ledge down here to find another trophy.

Ace Chemical Tower

There’s a lone tower east of Ace Chemicals. Grapple to the top ledge to find this.

Chinatown Hotel

In the northernmost corner of the island is a rundown hotel. Head around back to find a wood panel you can bust through. Do so, then grapple up to the hole to find a trophy inside.

Dixon Dock West

There’s a warehouse across from the docks proper. Drive through the splintered door with the Batmobile, then grapple up to the catwalks to grab this.

Dixon Dock West

On the northern end of the dockyard is a suspended shipping container. Grapple up there, then drop into the open end to find a trophy inside.

Clock Tower

Across the street from the Clock Tower is a Riddler puzzle. First, use the Batmobile’s winch to pull the wheel inside the cage forward. Next, shoot an electrical charge into the generator on top to power the other cogs, temporarily opening the door. Quickly grab the trophy from inside.

Clock Tower

Grapple up the balcony above the Riddler puzzle. Head inside the abandoned building to find another trophy.

Clock Tower

The building north of the Clock Tower has another Riddler puzzle for you. You can’t collect the trophy yourself thanks to the electrified floor, so use the Voice Synthesizer to send the Riddler bot inside. Have him dismantle the first sentry gun, then use the Remote Hacking Device to temporarily disable the other. Command the bot to grab the trophy and bring it you. Score!

Coast Guard Station

The station is directly south from the Clock Tower. Check underneath the boardwalk to find a trophy, and use your Batclaw to fetch it.

Earl Cooper Auto Repair

This auto shop is across the street from the Bank of Gotham in Chinatown. Use the Batmobile’s Forensics scanner on the green symbol to make Riddler marks appear on the ground. Follow these – you’ll have to double back and get onto the bridge – to find a spot you can blast open with the car’s cannon. Grapple up to get the trophy inside.

Earl Cooper Auto Repair

There’s a storage unit atop the shop. Use your Batarang on the switch to raise the containers inside, then head over the pressure pad. Step on it and use the Batclaw to yank the trophy your way, causing a bunch of Riddler bots to appear. Save yourself the fight: use the Remote Controlled Batarang to hit the other switch on the containers and drop them on the minions.

Near Ace Chemical Bridge

On the Chinatown side of the bridge is a green handle in a column. Use the Batmobile’s winch to pull the trophy out from inside the building.

Near Ace Chemical Bridge

On the opposite side of the Chinatown bridge end is a large warehouse; you can get inside via the waterfront. There’s a trophy inside.

Rooftop near Osamu Tower

Osamu Tower stands in the heart of Chinatown, and this rooftop to the southeast is home to three Riddler bots. For each one you defeat, a light next to the locked trophy will glow. You can hit the switch to revive the three downed bots. Defeat each one three times to unlock the trophy.

Bleake Island Riddler Victims

Chinatown

Head northeast from Perdition Bridge into Chinatown, and grapple to the next overpass directly after the “Welcome to Chinatown” sign. Step on the switch here to activate a Riddler video. When it’s over, use the Remote Batarang to scan the rioters and find the bomb victim. Throw another Batarang through the nearby electrical field to charge up, then nail him to deactivate the bomb.

Chinatown

This one is at the northeast edge of Chinatown, near the hotel. Step on the switch, use your Batarang to find the victim, and use another Batarang to pass through the current near the hotel sign to take him out.

Clock Tower

The last victim is found just east of the Clock Tower, and the Riddler switch is on a rooftop overlooking the parade float nearby. Use the Remote Batarang to find the victim, then guide a second one through the electricity on the Urbarail track above and knock him out.

Bleake Island Militia Shields

GCPD Lockup

Attached to the building, facing the highway to the east.

Kord Industries

Found in the center of The Cauldron, hanging on the southernmost wall of the building.

McKie’s Gems

In Central Bleake Island, look up a wall in an alleyway by McKie’s Gems store.

Dixon Dock West

Found in the dry canal next to the dock.

Dixon Dock West

A little further north along the same wall, over the water.

Clock Tower

Just east of the Clock Tower, look high on a tower across the road from the hotel.

Clock Tower/Chinatown

Head north from the Clock Tower to find this just on the Chinatown border, high up on a building.

Chinatown

Found on a building in the northernmost corner of the island.

Bank of Gotham

Hanging high on the northern portion of the large bank building.

Bank of Gotham

Check the nearby Urbarail Station to find this.

Panessa Studios

Check just north of the studio building to find this next to a billboard.

Panessa Studios

In the north end of the parking lot. Look up at the overpass to spot it.

Panessa Studios

Found on a scaffolding on the road to Merchant Bridge.

Panessa Studios

Also near Merchant Bridge. Check the eastern side by the lighthouse.

Falcone Shipping Antenna

Attached to the crane at the northern end of the yard.

Destiny 2 will go through some major changes in Year 4, and so too will our Destiny 2 guide hub. With activities and planets both entering and leaving the game in the months to come, including an all-new destination and an updated new-player experience, sorting out how to do what and in what order will be especially important. Fortunately, we’ve collected years worth of walkthroughs, tips, step-by-step guides, and broader breakdowns in this comprehensive Destiny 2 guide. We’ll update this hub as Destiny 2 evolves, but whatever you’re looking for right now, you’ll find it in the sections (and sub-sections!) below.

If you’re looking for Destiny 2 help in areas other than the main campaign missions, then this is the place to be. We’ll be updating this section with links to tips and tricks, collectibles locations, and various other guidance to ensure you get the best out of Destiny 2.

Destiny 2 Sparrow

Sparrows were a standard form of transport in the original Destiny, but their presence is notably lacking when you start the sequel. If you’re tired of walking, here’s how you get a Sparrow in Destiny 2 (opens in new tab).

Destiny 2 Chests

There’s plenty of loot to be had in Destiny 2 by tracking down Region, Lost Sector, and Treasure chests. Get searching for them with our Destiny 2 Chest locations guide (opens in new tab).

Destiny 2 Exotic Weapons

We’ve updated our list of the best Destiny 2 Exotics (opens in new tab) and narrowed it down to 10 must-have weapons that can be obtained in clear, actionable ways. From the Divinity trace rifle to the DPS staple Izanagi’s Burden to PvP monsters like The Last Word, here are 10 Exotics that you can use to build up your arsenal.

Destiny 2 Heroic Public Events

One of the best ways of unlocking new guns and armor is taking part in the Public Events marked on the map, but if you can upgrade it to the Heroic version then you’ll get much better loot. Each type of event requires a different method, so here’s how to trigger Heroic Public Events in Destiny 2 (opens in new tab).

Destiny 2 Easter Eggs

Everyone loves a good secret, and players are already discovering plenty of Easter eggs tucked away within Destiny 2. For a complete listing, check out the best Destiny 2 Easter eggs (opens in new tab), or if you want to jump to something specific then here’s how to unlock Destiny 2’s secret speed boost at The Farm (opens in new tab) and how to get the huge Traveler ball in the Tower in Destiny 2 (opens in new tab).

Destiny 2 Crucible Multiplayer

Destiny 2’s Crucible multiplayer has changed a lot, with smaller team-sizes, new game modes, new weapons and abilities, and a vastly reduced the focus on power-weapons and Super attacks. Get the drop on the other Guardians with our Destiny 2 Crucible tips (opens in new tab).

Destiny 2: Forsaken – Where to find all the new collectibles

Destiny 2: Forsaken has, naturally, introduced a ton of new resources, currencies, and collectibles into the sandbox system, all of which need accruing if your Guardian plans to make a name for themselves in Bungie’s shared world shooter. The following guides give you step-by-step, up to date advice on where and how to find each one, and what rewards await you in return.

Destiny 2: Forsaken – The Dreaming City

Destiny 2: Forsaken’s latest endgame zone, The Dreaming City, is an ethereal paradise of wonder and intrigue, replete with secrets and evolving stories. But you can’t get there straight away. There’s a series of steps that need completing before any Guardian can step foot within its walls, which is where our Destiny 2: Forsaken Dreaming City (opens in new tab) guide comes in.

Once you’ve arrived, make sure to read all about the Destiny 2: Forsaken Dreaming City hidden cat locations (opens in new tab) before going to find them for yourselves, as they’re an easy avenue for new Legendary weapons and armour.

Destiny 2: Forsaken – Shattered Throne

To this day, there’s nothing quite like the Dreaming City’s Shattered Throne dungeon. It’s the perfect mix of Strikes and raids. You can do it solo or with a team of three, it’s home tons of secrets, and it’s got unique and exciting boss fights. It’s one of the best parts of Forsaken, and with our Destiny 2 Shattered Throne guide (opens in new tab), you’ll never want for directions or strategies. We’ve also got some solo tips if you’re brave enough to descend alone.

Even after two years of expansions and loot changes, the many varieties of Destiny 2 chests are still some of the best ways to get materials and other goodies. Whether it’s checking off rare chests, cracking open Strike or Lost Sector chests, or nabbing normal planetary chests on your patrol route, opening chests is an easy way to make Destiny 2 more rewarding. With that in mind, we’ve rounded up the basics of Destiny 2’s many chests, including where to find them and how to make the most of them, along with a more in-depth look at the chests on the game’s core planets.

Types of chests in Destiny 2

There are five kinds of chests in Destiny 2: Enemy Chests, Elite and Boss Chests, Lost Sector Chests, Region Chests, and Treasure Chests.

Enemy Chests

These are the most common types of loot caches you’ll find in your journey through Destiny 2. These chests are guarded by a particular kind of enemy and can look different depending on whether it’s a Fallen, Taken, Vex, or Cabal stash. These chests spawn at random intervals throughout each zone. If the region you’re in contains enemies, it’s almost certain that there will be Enemy Chests nearby to collect. This type of chest will also spawn as a reward for completing a Patrol.

Elite and Boss Chests

When traveling through Public Sectors, you may stumble upon Major and Ultra enemies. Sometimes these seem random and sometimes they’re part of a Secret Event. Either way, when they’re defeated, there’s a chance they’ll drop one of these Elite Chests. Bosses can also drop these, and they will typically contain better rewards than the crates that drop from lesser enemies.

Lost Sector Chests

These chests are the prize for clearing out a Lost Sector. To open them you’ll need first to defeat an Elite foe located somewhere in the sector. Taking them out will get you the code you need to unlock this chest. If you continue through the Lost Sector after looting the chest the first time and take out more enemies, you can return to the crate to get more items. The more times you return though, the poorer quality the loot will be. These chests should reset once a week, so come back often for more items.

Region Chests

Region Chests spawn in a set location and are typically hidden somewhere off the beaten path. They will usually have higher quality items than your typical Enemy Chest, and getting them the first time you hit a region is an excellent way to make sure you continue to get a good flow of improved weapons and armor.

Treasure Chests

After completing the campaign and receiving access to a particular location, Cayde-6 will offer you weekly treasure maps. Each map leads to a chest location which can be found by heading to the right area and solving the clues he provides. For all the info, check out our Destiny 2 Cayde-6 treasure chests location guide (opens in new tab).

Xbox One X Enhanced games will bring out the very best in Microsoft’s powerful high-end console. These games come in all shapes and sizes – exclusive or multiplatform, current or backwards compatible, available now or still to come – but no matter the circumstances, they’re going to look excellent. Visual luxuries like 4K resolution and HDR lighting effects are made possible by the world-class hardware in the Xbox One X, which can boost in-game graphics to previously unseen levels only rivaled by high-end PCs.

What Enhanced actually means can vary wildly from game to game, but usually you’re looking at 4K output and/or HDR capabilities as a bare minimum. You’ll often get plenty of performance bonuses to boot, including graphical upgrades like better lighting and shadows, improved textures, increased detail at distance, and more. Some games like The Witcher 3 (opens in new tab) and Monster Hunter World (opens in new tab) also give you the choice between maximum resolution or the highest, smoothest framerates (as the two modes are often a ‘one or the other’ deal).

You’ll be shocked to see just how many games support the power that is Xbox One X Enhanced, some of which you might be hearing about for the first time. There are well over 100 Xbox One X Enhanced titles, and the list just keeps on growing as more Xbox and Xbox 360 Backwards Compatibility games are added and developers come up with new ways to harness the power of the Xbox One X via post-release patches. We’ve listed all of the supported games here, be they upcoming or available now. But first, if you’re not sure what those technical terms like 4K and HDR actually mean, here’s a quick breakdown. If you’re already in the know, just scroll down to see the many Enhanced games and all the graphical improvements they have to offer. For anyone looking to jump aboard the Enhanced train, be sure to check out all the best Xbox One X deals (opens in new tab). Alternatively, you can head over to the best Xbox One bundle (opens in new tab) page for the cheaper Xbox One S.

  • 4K resolution on home screens is actually 3840 x 2160 pixels.
  • HDR means High Dynamic Range, and basically improves the color range of an image. So blacks are blacker, tones stronger, and so on.
  • FPS stands for ‘frames per second.’ Most games hit 30fps now, with 60fps being the gold standard to aim for. It’s worth noting that when framerates are noticed and discussed, it’s usually because they’re changing or unstable, not necessarily because they’re lower.
  • Checkerboard rendering is a way of essentially splitting a screen image into a tiny grid and only rendering every other square. A filter then reconstructs the missing parts to create the target resolution, using less processing power as a result. It’s practically indistinguishable to the human eye, but technically not ‘true’ 4K.
  • Dynamic scaling/resolution means that a game varies the resolution it renders at, usually depending on the processing power needed at any given moment. This doesn’t always affect the output resolution, as things can be scaled up. So, roughly speaking, a ‘4K’ game might render a 2K image when things are quiet, and upscale to 4K, but drop to a lower rendered resolution (still upscaled to 4K) when a lot is happening onscreen (explosions, loads of enemies, etc.)

You can find a more in-depth explanation of what things like 4K and HDR actually mean (opens in new tab) here. With that, here’s every Xbox One X Enhanced game and what features it includes (including specifics where applicable), all ordered alphabetically.
