The best Razer controllers are some of the greatest pads available regardless of whether you play on console or PC. Some Razer controllers even beat out models manufactured by console companies.

It’s worth noting that some Razer controllers can be at a higher end of one’s budget but they justify this price point with the features and customization which is on offer. You also get exceptional design and build quality. When picking up one of these gamepads its also likely that you’re picking up one of the best PC controllers as they all work flawlessly with Windows.

Razer offer different levels of controllers, if you’re on the hunt for something to suit more professional gaming then you may lean more towards the ‘Tournament Edition’ types. However, if you’re not fussed about competitive edge and just want a good quality long lasting controller then take a look at the ‘Ultimate’ variants. Both are chock-full of features and options, though, and each is worth a serious look.

We’ve organized the list below to make it easier to find a suitable controller based on your platform and required compatibility as Razer offer a range of options.

1. Razer Raiju Tournament

The best Razer controller for eSports

Specifications

Wireless: Yes, can be used Wired. Powered By: Rechargeable BatteryBattery Life: 19 Hours

Reasons to buy

+Ergonomic design and premium feel+Great features+Tactile button feedback+Easy accompanying app

Reasons to avoid

-Asymmetrical so may not suit all users

The Razer Raiju Tournament Edition is an excellent pick for those browsing Razer controllers. Though it’s geared more towards sports and competitive play, it is still a wonderful controller for those looking for something premium and quality, and different to the DualShock 4.

It has a wonderful weight and build-quality you can really feel. However, underneath the premium exterior is a whole host of programmable options thanks to the corresponding Razer app. Just sync the app to the controller via Bluetooth and away you go, allowing you to tweak the function of each button however you see fit and even set the level of rumble on either side of the gamepad. In terms of sheer versatility, the Razer Raiju Tournament Edition certainly earns its keep.

This Raiju model succeeds in the realms of design, too: it’s of the asymmetric school of thought more often seen on Xbox controllers. What’s more, the design also represents the best of both worlds, as evidenced by the split D-pad and emphasis on the central touchpad. It’s one of the top Razer controllers going, period – particularly thanks to the rear buttons that allow you to react faster without having to take your thumbs off the thumbsticks.

2. Razer Raiju Ultimate

The best premium Razer controller

Specifications

Wireless: Yes, but can be used wired.Powered By: Rechargeable batteryBattery Life: 11 hours

Reasons to buy

+Premium design and build+Very customizable+Features and programmable buttons coming out the wazoo+RGB lighting

Reasons to avoid

-Asymmetrical so may not suit all users.

The Razer Raiju Ultimate is perfect for those PS4 players looking to get increased versatility and functionality from their Razer controller. The customization, multi-functional buttons, and interchangeable D-pad and thumbsticks are all great factors that are useful to the dedicated eSports player craving an edge. They also make for an interesting addition to those who prefer ‘story games’ but are looking for shortcuts, or their own way to play.

The press of every button is satisfyingly tactile, and even the touchpad feels good to tap, with it never being in doubt whether presses registered either in wired or wireless modes. Not having to press L2 and R2 as far down when trigger lock is activated helps as well; it’s a small feature almost every PS4 player will enjoy and be satisfied by. The extra ‘M’ buttons on the back of the controller will take some getting used to, but once you’ve mastered them, the Raiju Ultimate will be your go-to pad. They really help to reduce finger travel-time.

While it does have a large entry price, if you ever have the chance to grab a discount on this premium Razer controller for PS4, you’d be mad not to jump on that opportunity.

3. Razer Wolverine V2

A Series X controller with more customization options

Specifications

Wireless: NoPowered By: USBBattery Life: N/A

Reasons to buy

+Tactile buttons+Trigger-stop switches+Extra remappable shoulder buttons

Reasons to avoid

-Strange View/Menu button placement-Trigger and bumper buttons grind when pressed together

The latest in the Razer controller lineup, this is the successor to the entry-level Wolverine controller. It’s been given a modern and considerable makeover to coincide with the release of the Xbox Series X and this Razer controller might just be for you if you’re after some extra customization: there are extra remappable buttons up top; and you can switch to hair triggers to reduce the actuation depth for a quicker response.

It has a high-ish price tag but largely warrants it, as, for you’re money, you’re getting exceptional grip on the front side as well as rear; improved tactile buttons; a very comfortable-but-chunky design; and the speeds of a wired connection. There’s no wireless option yet, sadly, but this will at least mean zero lag on inputs and you don’t have to worry about batteries either. The cable is nearly 10ft/3m long so should be fine for most players.

4. Razer Wolverine Ultimate

The best Xbox Razer controller

Specifications

Wireless: NoPowered By: USBBattery Life: N/A

Reasons to buy

+Reliable+Quality Razer build+Interchangeable thumbsticks and d-pads+Onboard media controllers

Reasons to avoid

-Higher price tag to match the ‘ultimate features’

The top Razer Xbox controller is the Wolverine Ultimate, without question. It’s one of the highest-quality Razer controllers out of this entire guide, too.

Featuring the classic Razer Chroma RGB lighting that changes while you play, it matches those visuals with interchangeable thumbsticks and d-pads, four extra back buttons, and two extra shoulder buttons. Everything is within reach of your fingers no matter the controls you need or the game you’re playing, increasing response-time dramatically.

The Wolverine Ultimate does have the ‘Ultimate’ price tag, but its features, quality design, and build largely justify it. It gives you the undeniable precision, quality, and pizazz a Razer controller should. In fact, it’s the go-to controller of a few Xbox players we know – and for good reason.

5. Razer Wolverine Tournament Edition

The best Xbox Razer controller for eSports

Specifications

Wireless: NoPowered by: USBBattery life: N/A

Reasons to buy

+4 remappable buttons+Short hair trigger locks+Non-slip rubber grip+Elegant Chroma lighting

Reasons to avoid

-Hefty price tag to go with all of the features

The Razer Wolverine Tournament Edition manages to balance advanced customizability and pared-back style, offering Xbox One players flexibility without being garish or ugly. The primary way the Razer Wolverine Tournament Edition achieves this is via four remappable buttons, two of which are back paddles that are easily accessed during the heat of play. This helps reduce finger travel-time, meaning you don’t ever need to take your thumbs off the thumbsticks. That’s crucial in competitive games, and it provides a few extra milliseconds that can save your (digital) life.

Other advancements this Razer controller features are hair-trigger locks, which reduce the actuation needed in the buttons and thus making the act of firing faster possible in first-person shooters. Also aiding competitive players is the controller’s ergonomic non-slip rubber grip, ensuring they always have a handle on their in-game actions.

If you’re an Xbox player who loves the competitive scene, this controller is well worth considering.

6. Razer Kishi

The best Razer mobile controller

Specifications

Wireless: NoPowered by: Phone BatteryBattery Life: N/A

Reasons to buy

+Excellent thumbsticks+Fits lots of smartphones+Clever, space-saving design+No latency

Reasons to avoid

-Locked to platform

With mobile games becoming steadily more complex, the drawbacks of touch screen controls have never been more apparent. Trying to play a shooter like Fortnite or Call of Duty just doesn’t work as well on phones, for example. That’s where the Razer Kishi comes into its own. Acting as a case for your device, it connects via the USB-C port and adds standardized controls on either side – it’s like a stretched out Xbox One controller.

This is a revelation in use. Because it adds clickable thumbsticks, face buttons, and shoulder triggers, it’s just like using a ‘normal’ controller for your phone games. That’ll be especially useful with Project xCloud, the Xbox streaming service; the Kishi is compatible with it, meaning you can be playing everything from Gears of War to Halo on your phone without having to suffer through touch screen-related woes.

The only downside of this product is that if you purchase it to work with an iPhone you will not be able to switch over to Android due to how the connection is made and vice versa, so be sure to choose the correct model.

How do we test our Razer controllers?

It’s worth noting that we don’t test every controller which makes it into our buying guide but we do try out best to test most of them. You can find out more information about our opinion on each controller within the specific review linked below. In brief, every controller that we have had our hands on is used in a series of different video games to accommodate for most genres. This means that we’ll test the responsiveness of the sticks, face buttons, bumpers, triggers, and any other additional features found on the unit. If a controller is wired or relies on rechargeable batteries, then the duration of the lifespan is tested, too. The same can be said for any specialist software, such as drivers, that may be included with the gamepad as well.

For more on how we test controllers at GamesRadar+ check out our full article, and for something more representative of our holistic approach to the latest gear, check out our Hardware Policy

Given the reputation, it’s no real surprise that the company has taken what it knows so well in the form of their Razer headsets, Razer laptops, or Razer streaming gear and applied it to their many Razer controllers.

Adding a cheap Xbox controller to your setup and console gear is a great way to enhance your gaming armoury. A new or extra controller for your Xbox console – this gen or last-gen – is an important acquisition as it adds flexibility and (potentially) a little diversity and quality to your setup.

However, some of the more premium Xbox controllers can get a little pricey, so it pays to do a little deal hunting and find some of the best discounts around. That’s why we’ve got our price comparison software on the job of finding a bargain. Bare in mind sometimes this extra cost is worth it as these controllers are also compatible PC controllers. Not only are we rounding up all the best gamepads you should be getting your hands on, but we’re also bringing you the cheapest Xbox controller deals on the web right now. These prices are updated every half an hour for the absolute best savings available today, so whether you’re after a cheap multiplayer stand-in or a super customizable pro device you’ll always get the best deal possible.

These cheap Xbox controllers are all compatible with both Xbox One and Xbox Series X / S. That means you’ll be able to grab one of the best Xbox One accessories and best Xbox Series X accessories no matter what generation you’re still rolling with.

1. Xbox Core Wireless controller

The new Xbox Series X controller is also compatible with the Xbox One, so if you’re looking for a more comfortable grip, textured triggers, and a hybrid D-pad on the previous generation, you’re in luck. You’re getting a far more ergonomic experience with the new redesign, and prices are often a little lower than the previous model as well.

Not only that, but the new share button will work across both generations as well. With the Xbox Series X came a new generation of the best Xbox controllers. This is still a AA battery operated piece of equipment, but the new play and charge kit also offers up USB-C charging as well.

2. PowerA Enhanced Wired Xbox Controller

If you don’t want to break $40 you can still pick up an excellent cheap Xbox controller. The PowerA Enhanced series offers plenty of different color options as well as compatibility across both Xbox One and Xbox Series X. That’s perfect if you’re after a quick stand-in, or a more affordable third player gamepad.

You’re also picking two additional buttons which can easily be remapped, dual rumble motors, a 3.5mm headphone jack, Share button and volume dial built in. That means all the functionality of the new Series X controller with a much lower price tag. The main sacrifice here is that wired connection, though.

1. Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2

The Xbox Elite Controller Series 2 is Microsoft’s all-singing, all-dancing ode to the competitive scene. As a follow-up to the already-brilliant Elite Controller, this peripheral had the odds stacked against it; the original was perfect already, so why invest in a new one? The Elite Series 2 gives more than a few reasons.

To begin with, it has a new trigger, bumper, and handle design built for superior grip. This is followed by three built-in custom profiles, increased battery life, Bluetooth functionality, and a detachable charging dock that’s built into the controller’s carry case. Like its predecessor, it’s highly adaptable as well; both thumbsticks and the D-Pad can be replaced with performance-targeted alternatives, the shoulder buttons can be fine-tuned with a hair-trigger lock that shortens travel, and the four back paddles give access to face button inputs without having to move your fingers an inch.

It’s expensive, but you’re paying for quality. You’re also paying for improved performance – this handset will have you reacting faster than you ever could on a standard Xbox One controller. Note: Microsoft has stopped making the series 1 version now, so this is the Elite one to shop for.

2. Razer Wolverine Ultimate

Hardware giant Razer throws its hat into the pro controller ring with the Wolverine Ultimate. Like everything else they do, it’s of the highest quality and earns the larger price tag.

Boasting fancy Chroma lighting that changes while you play, interchangeable thumbsticks and d-pads, four back buttons so you don’t have to reach for the face buttons, and two extra shoulder buttons, it aims to have everything in reach without you needing to lift your thumbs from the sticks. The face buttons are super responsive too by ditching the squishy buttons of old for a very satisfying click with minimal travel.

It’s aggressively targetting Microsoft’s latest Elite Series 2 controller with similar pricing and features and the Wolverine Ultimate justifies that by giving you the undeniable precision, quality, and pizazz of the Razer brand.

Razer Wolverine Tournament Edition

3. Razer Wolverine Tournament Edition

The Razer Wolverine Tournament Edition is priced around $119/£119 so we’re holding it to a higher standard of testing, especially against the excellent Wolverine Ultimate which is packed with features, albeit at a higher price too.

The Wolverine Tournament Edition feels great in the hands and we love the extra shoulder buttons. Equally pleasing is the way the two rear paddles are tucked away modestly enough to ensure accidental touches are kept to a minimum and you don’t have to adjust your usual grip to use them, they’re just…ready. You’ve also got the lockable trigger switches from the Ultimate so you can have less travel on LT/RT too if you want.

However, the lack of swappable analog sticks and d-pads is disappointing for this price. As is the lack of an on-board button to change button mapping on the fly without having to revert back to the Xbox app. The face buttons are really stiff too, with a heavier and longer touch required compared to the instant reactions of the Wolverine Ultimate and even the standard Xbox One controller. We’d wait for a lower sale price, or better yet if your budget will allow it, pick up the excellent Razer Wolverine Ultimate we mentioned earlier in this guide instead.

Play and Charge Kit

Xbox One controller cheap

©Microsoft

If you’re fed up of burning through disposable AA batteries for your controller, the Play and Charge Kit will become your new best friend. This handy accessory gives you up to 30 hours of wireless play, and it’s rechargeable to ensure longevity.

It’s easy to use, too. Simply slot it into the AA battery slot on the back of your controller and away you go. When it starts to run low on juice, just plug in the cable provided and carry on playing.

Basically? The Play and Charge Kit is an essential purchase if you’re new to Xbox One.

Are cheap Xbox controllers compatible with PC?

Is the Xbox controller compatible with PC? Absolutely. It’s a relatively hassle-free process; you can either plug the controller into a USB port with your charging cable (a standard USB to micro-USB cable), connect via Bluetooth, or use an official Wireless Adaptor for Windows 10. However, be aware that you can only use the Bluetooth function if your controller was made after 2016.

Post-2016 models have the Xbox button as part of the main controller ‘face’ (e.g. the plastic around the Xbox button is matte and part of the main shell). Controllers made beforehand feature the Xbox button on a separate, shiny plastic strip that’s connected to the bumpers.

As discussed above, going wireless on PC with older Xbox One controllers (or PCs without Bluetooth capability) requires the official Wireless Adaptor. This isn’t too expensive and is relatively easy to get hold of.

You’ll find the cheapest prices listed here.

If you’re after more gear, we’re also rounding up all the best Xbox steering wheels available now, and showing you how to find Xbox Series X restocks and Xbox Series S bundles if you’re still without the current-gen console. Of course, we’re also showing you all the latest Xbox Live deals and the best Xbox Series X external hard drives as well.

It can be hard to find the best Xbox Series X controller due to the fact that there have been so many companies throwing their hats in the ring. No matter what your need for a new controller is, whether its to replace your main pad, or for a spare when your friends are over there are a range on offer to suit you. This list contains both official Microsoft controllers and third-party ones.

As many people prefer the flexibility and comfort of a wireless controller it goes without saying that battery life has to be considered when determining which is the best Xbox Series X controller. Having an extra pad for a ‘one in, one out’ policy can be sensible for those who are prone to longer gaming sessions. Due to the versatility of Xbox Series X controllers its likely that while picking one up you may also be picking up one of the best PC controllers, too. Having tested all of these pads extensively, we can say that they have become some of the best Xbox Series X controllers money can buy as they go beyond the standard pad’s abilities. But they will often cost a bit more.

But remember that due to excellent forward, backward, (and sideways) compatibility, a lot of the best Xbox Series X controllers are also top Series S controllers, and candidates for best Xbox One controller, too, so the value and usability on offer is brilliant. We’ve tested a whole range of pads here at GamesRadar+ and some, if not most, of the below are now our everyday controllers in one way or another so we know which ones to go for, which ones offer what, and, pertinently, which are worth your hard earned cash.

1. Xbox Wireless Controller

The best Xbox Series X controller for most people

Specifications

Wireless: YesPowered by: AA batteriesBattery life: Depends on your AAs/battery packs

Reasons to buy

+OG quality and reliability+Works both wired and wireless+Native compatibility+Improved feel in the hand

Reasons to avoid

-Not changed too much from the Xbox One pad-Still uses batteries

All things considered (so to speak), it really is no shock that we think the best Xbox Series X controller for most people is the official console controller – now also called the core Xbox pad.

Predictably, we’ve found it to work smoothly and beautifully via cable or the usual pairing mode, and it’s got that excellent performance and comfort by default. It will be very familiar to Xbox One owners from the last generation but there are subtle tweaks that do make it an objectively better controller.

This time around we have USB-C charging which is faster than Micro-USB (if you use a rechargeable pack at least) and there’s a ‘hybrid’ D-pad that takes its cues from a more premium Xbox controller that we’ll mention later. Like with many other players, we have found the big inclusion to be the share button which was missing all of the last generation (while the DualShock 4 had it from the start) – which does exactly what it should, enabling you to take snaps or clips and share media easily.

However, there’s an overwhelming reason why this iteration is easy for us to recommend and why it is similar to the previous generation’s – if it isn’t broken, you don’t fix it. And that’s why we have a superb Xbox Series X/S controller in the shape of the updated core controller. You cannot go wrong with this one, and our testing proved that the Xbox core controller is a brilliant one.

Turtle Beach Recon Controller

2. Turtle Beach Recon Controller

The best affordable specialist Xbox Series X controller

Specifications

Wireless: NoPowered by: USBBattery life: N/A

Reasons to buy

+Comfortable D-pad +Tactile feel +Outstanding audio control

Reasons to avoid

-It’s light in the hand

We really think this is an Xbox Series X controller that punches well above its weight. The Turtle Beach Recon Controller is stacked with features, some of which are only present in more expensive pads – the most noticeable of which to us in our testing was a host of audio options that are available through a dedicated audio bar atop the dashboard button – something rarely seen on a controller.

These audio options offer a startling array of choices to choose from when plugged in through your controller, and the EQ and settings available proved to us that they are excellent. Turtle Beach’s ‘superhuman hearing’ is particularly great and isolates and amplifies subtle noises that would have otherwise been washed out in the chaos, such as gunfire and footsteps.

Sound aside, however, in our testing and reviewing we found this to still be just a great gamepad to use and this comes from two very interesting features: ‘Pro Aim’ mode and button remapping. The former is a form of sensitivity reduction that has four different levels of force (the fourth and highest setting restricts stick movement for more precise inputs) and it works surprisingly well. The button remapping available is only on the two rear buttons but is also executed well: both can be programmed to cycle through four different profiles for different configurations of resistance and audio settings. This means that you spend less time desperately wading through the options and have your desired setup for any given in-game moment.

Overall, if you don’t mind being attached by a wire, we don’t think there aren’t many that are better value, and better quality wired Xbox Series X controllers.

3. Xbox Elite Series 2 Controller

The best top-of-the-line wireless Xbox Series X controller

Specifications

Wireless: YesPowered by: Lithium-ion internal packBattery life: 30-40 hours

Reasons to buy

+Unparalleled customization +Incredible build quality +Wired or wireless use

Reasons to avoid

-Requires a healthy investment

You probably knew it was coming but near the top of any best Xbox Series X controller list, we simply have to feature the Elite Series 2 pad. It really is the one to beat for many Xbox (and PC) users, with none bettering its performance and feature set.

Naturally, it often demands a price tag to match its premium nature, but we have seen this level out at a new, lower price range which is encouraging (or potentially is heralding the arrival of the Elite Series 3 perhaps…). But anyway, what that means, in reality, is the Elite Series 2 is just more affordable than it has ever been and if you want a premium beast for the new-gen of consoles then this is still the one to beat.

Included are replacement thumbstick heads, a classic cross-design D-pad, and tools to tailor the feel of the controller to your liking – with physical adjustments to almost every part of the controller. Also, there’s a better, extended 40-hour battery life which represents a good 8-hour bump up from the Xbox Series X gamepad’s lifespan between charges. From our testing, the experience of using the Elite Series 2

On the whole, if you can stretch the budget, the Elite 2 justifies its asking price through its premium design and suite of features.

4. Thrustmaster eSwap X Pro

The best Xbox Series X controller for accessibility and modifications

Specifications

Wireless: NoPowered by: USBBattery life: N/A

Reasons to buy

+Bigger than average build +Great weight +Different D-pads are viable

Reasons to avoid

-Always plugged in

Personally my favorite Xbox Series X controller (read more on that in our full Thrustmaster eSwap X Pro review). It’s brilliant for accessibility and changing a controller to be exactly what you need it to be in terms of the ‘main’ features – the D-Pad and sticks – but beyond that, we also think this is just a brilliant Series X controller. And one that’s very worthy of its price tag; as it’ll give you more options, features, and customization options than you can swing a bat at.

The main core of the feature set of the eSwap X Pro is its modular design which can be changed to however you prefer – we even tried having three analog sticks for fun, for example. This enables a quick swap from symmetric to asymmetric with a wave of a tool and sets the scene for a great controller build. Elsewhere the rear buttons proved to us to be excellent to use and program, though perhaps not quite as intuitive as more paddle-like solutions. However, we did really like the actuation of the bumpers and face buttons which are satisfying and punchy, and the triggers are also excellent.

It’s a chunkier pad than most, but I have managed it with smaller hands, and with it being wired you know you’re getting the fastest input from your actions possible.

And if you want to top it off with even more customization options, be aware that you can swap out the wing panels, sticks, and D-Pad for different colors and LED parts to bring your pad to life. This is a great controller.

best pc controller: Razer Wolverine V2

5. Razer Wolverine V2

The best Razer Xbox Series X controller

Specifications

Wireless : NoPowered by: USBBattery life: N/A

Reasons to buy

+Clicky buttons +Rugged feel +Responsive feedback

Reasons to avoid

-Wire doesn’t detach

If a specialist, feature-filled third-party Xbox Series X controller is what you’re after but you don’t have the budget to throw money at the situation then the Razer Wolverine V2 is a great candidate for you, and one we can heartily recommend.

Tweaking and tinkering really is the name of the game with this controller; especially for its ‘mecha’ tactile buttons – which were satisfyingly clicky in our testing – and the adjustable sensitivity of the two analog sticks. It is wired, however, something that may not gel with those looking to sit a decent distance away.

We really think that this successfully builds on the initial iteration of the Wolverine from the last console generation, (still a great controller in itself for Xbox consoles), and given the V2’s price is not too much more than the MSRP of the standard Xbox gamepad, it’s worth a second look if some extra features and button are what you’re after.

6. Nacon Revolution X Pro Controller

The best PC controller for Esports customization

Specifications

Wireless: NoPowered by: USBBattery life: N/A

Reasons to buy

+Great weight and build quality +Stellar physical tweaking options +Reprogrammable buttons

Reasons to avoid

-It’s not wireless-The software isn’t ideal

The Nacon Revolution X Pro Controller is one of the studier gamepads we’ve had our hands on, and it has exceptional build quality and a satisfying weight to it. Its suite of adjustability and customization options (both physically and through software) offers functionality comparable to high-end Esports controllers (like the Xbox Elite 2) for a fraction of their asking price.

You not only benefit from being able to swap out thumbstick heads, or adding or subtracting movement from your analog sticks but there is also the option to restrict trigger feedback, too, which can prove instrumental in certain competitive game genres. On the audio front, it’s also nice to see Dolby Atmos present and accounted for, and while your tweaking options are a little on the thin side, the sound that comes through the Nacon Revolution X Pro Controller (through all the headsets tested) was suitably impressive.

8. Scuf Instinct Pro

The best customizable and esports Xbox Series X controller

Specifications

Wireless: YesPowered by: BatteriesBattery life: Up to 30 hours

Reasons to buy

+Superb back buttons+Customize the design yourself+Great overall build-quality

Reasons to avoid

-So much more expensive than the competition

It’s fair enough to be skeptical of the design-it-yourself Scuf Instinct. For starters, it’s expensive. Incredibly expensive. But if you can move past that, you’ll find a genuinely excellent Xbox Series X controller with the best back buttons we’ve ever used. These things are a revelation.

Sure, you can mix and match designs ranging from simple color-swaps to golden Japanese Koi art. It also has a satisfyingly ergonomic rubber coating at the front for better grip. Oh, and you can change the shape of the thumbsticks before checkout as well. That’s not what stays with you when you boot up a game, though. Rather, it’s the savvy back button placement that makes them so easy to activate in the middle of a Destiny firefight or Call of Duty battle. Because they form a shell of sorts around your index finger, all you need to do is press down or lift up to activate them. It’s much more intuitive than the other alternatives we’ve tried – and we’ve tried more than our fair share.

The trigger locks are right on the money as well. They enable much faster responses than you’d find from the console’s standard controller; we’re definitely not that quick on the draw in Halo the rest of the time. Even the thumbsticks feel bouncier and more taut than usual.

So, is the result worth the money? Should you buy one instead of the Elite Series 2 – the current gold standard? It’s a subjective matter best left in your capable hands, but if you do decide to invest, you’ll find a handset at the top of its game.

How do we test our Xbox Series X Controllers?

In brief, every controller that we have had our hands on is used in a series of different video games to accommodate for most genres. This means that we’ll test the responsiveness of the sticks, face buttons, bumpers, triggers, and any other additional features found on the unit. If a controller is wired or relies on rechargeable batteries, then the duration of the lifespan is tested, too. The same can be said for any specialist software, such as drivers, that may be included with the gamepad as well.

For many PC gamers, the best PC controller for gaming offers a much more viable way of enjoying certain genres of games in comparison to the traditional keyboard and mouse. Simply put, you’re going to struggle pulling off full combos in fighting games or taking pole position in the latest racers when restricted to digital inputs just to name a few examples.

Some gamers will prefer to use the best PC controller for gaming for a multitude of different reasons. Some people may just prefer the familiarity as they transition from console to PC, or for others it may be the best way for them to maximize their performance.

The market is stocked full wired and wireless options, with some gamepads featuring mechanical microswitches and Esports-centric feature sets to suit any preference and budget from all the established names. Below you’ll find our top picks for the best PC controllers available in 2022 that we’ve put together through testing ourselves and from extensive research. A lot of us on the GamesRadar hardware team use these controllers ourselves so we know which are worth your hard-earned money.

1. Thrustmaster eSwap X Pro

The best and most accessible PC controller

Specifications

Wireless: NoPowered by: USBBattery life: N/A

Reasons to buy

+Bigger than average build +Great weight +Different D-pads are viable

Reasons to avoid

-Always plugged in

We recently reviewed this controller and praised it for its accessibility options. That goes hand-in-hand with the build quality – being a larger than average gamepad with a suitably heavier, more substantial, feel. Similar to the Razer Wolverine line, it’s wired, but this approach means that there is zero latency in the response time; perfect for those gaming sessions where milliseconds matter.

It’s in the surplus of extra buttons – including the phenomenal feeling triggers and the four on the face – that elevate this controller above its similarly priced competition. There are many customisation options due to the modular components, making it easy to adjust the controller as needed when switching games. It also means you are able to chose between a symmetrical or asymmetrical style depending on what you prefer.

If you’ve been waiting on a great feeling modular controller that finally allows you to swap the positions of the D-pad and left analog stick at will, as well as offering customisation and extra inputs, then this is the one.

2. Turtle Beach Recon Controller

The best affordable PC controller

Specifications

Wireless: NoPowered by: USBBattery life: N/A

Reasons to buy

+Comfortable D-pad +Tactile feel +Outstanding audio control

Reasons to avoid

-It’s light in the hand

There’s a lot of impressive features that this $60 Xbox controller has that gamepads twice its price point don’t. For a start, there’s a whole host of audio options available through the dedicated audio bar atop the dashboard button.

Through this menu, you can toggle things such as what Turtle Beach calls ‘superhuman hearing’ which isolates and amplifies subtle noises that would have otherwise been washed out in the chaos, such as gunfire and footsteps. In our testing, we found that this audio boost worked well to help us focus in the few games we tested it out on where the music could drown out such sound effects; Katana Zero, Hotline Miami, and Sonic Mania. That’s just scratching the surface of what the Turtle Beach Recon Controller provides from a purely audio perspective, though you will need a wired gaming headset. We tested the EQ and the four different levels of audio intensity and found the results were more than pleasing through a Razer Kraken Tournament Edition headset.

Sound aside, the two most interesting features relate to the physicality of gameplay; ‘Pro Aim’ mode and button remapping. The former is a form of sensitivity reduction that can be manually set to four different levels of force to suit the situation, with the 4th setting (highest) offering a restricted amount of stick movement for more precise inputs; it works surprisingly well. The button remapping refers to the two buttons on the back of the controller which can be programmed to cycle through four different profiles for different configurations of resistance and audio settings. This means that you spend less time desperately wading through the options and have your desired setup for any given in-game moment.

3. Xbox Wireless Controller

The best PC controller for most people

Specifications

Wireless: YesPowered by: AA batteriesBattery life: Depends on your AAs/battery packs

Reasons to buy

+Works both wired and wireless+Native compatibility+Improved feel in the hand

Reasons to avoid

-Very similar to the Xbox One gamepad-Still uses batteries

It should be of little surprise to anyone that the latest revision of the Xbox gamepad lands so high on our list for its performance and comfortable feel. Couple that with the fact that it works natively on PC – just plug it in or link up via Bluetooth – and it’s ready to go with no further messing around.

The new additions this time around, though distinctively minor, are the inclusions of USB-C charging – much faster than Micro-USB (if you use a rechargeable pack at least) – as well as the ‘hybrid’ D-pad which takes its cues from another much more expensive Xbox model that we’ll get to later. There’s also a share button – as was found on the DualShock 4 – which does exactly the same thing; create and share photos and video clips to upload to social media; something which offers limited functionality for use on PC.

There’s a reason why not much has changed in eight years – when the Xbox One controller launched – and it’s because it was already damn near perfect. If you want to go even further back, it’s only really been iterative since the Xbox 360’s gamepad back in 2005 – because it all just works exceedingly well and continues to be the go-to pad for PC, balancing performance and value.

Sony DualSense controller

4. PlayStation DualSense

The best Xbox alternative PC controller

Specifications

Wireless: YesPowered by: Lithium-ion internal packBattery life: 4-8 hours

Reasons to buy

+Amazing build quality +Satisfying buttons and triggers +Excellent rumble and haptics (if supported)+Upgrade over Dualshock 4

Reasons to avoid

-Low battery life

Sony’s newest controller sees the biggest departure from the DualShock brand in, well – ever. For a start, it’s not only the first PlayStation controller to forgo the moniker, but it deviates both in design and ergonomic feel almost wholesale – a change that was made for the better in our opinion.

As mentioned above, getting this controller to work on your PC has never been easier. Gone is the need to run third-party drivers like the ever-popular DS4Windows. Instead, boot up Big Picture, configure the controller with the PlayStation pre-set and you’re away.

The biggest drawback to the Dualsense on PC is that those all-impressive haptic feedback rumble motors aren’t configured to run at their full potential on the platform – if this omission is a deal-breaker for you – you may want to turn your attention to a different entry on our list.

Vibrating aside, one thing is for sure: this is a very well-made and comfy controller that serves as an excellent, symmetrical alternative for an Xbox gamepad.

5. Xbox Elite 2 Controller

The best top-of-the-line PC controller

Specifications

Wireless: YesPowered by: Lithium-ion internal packBattery life: 30-40 hours

Reasons to buy

+Unparalleled customization +Incredible build quality +Wired or wireless use

Reasons to avoid

-Very pricey

Here’s where things start to get serious – with a price tag to match no less. I’ll preface this by saying that this gamepad is, at heart, a mega-charged edition of the standard Xbox Series X controller.

Included in the box are replacement thumbstick heads, a classic cross-design D-pad, and tools to tailor the feel of the controller to your liking – with physical adjustments to almost every part of the controller. Also to note, the extended 40-hour battery life – akin to the Switch Pro controller – a good 8-hour bump up from the Xbox Series X gamepad’s lifespan between charges.

The Elite 2 does justify its asking price through its premium features but at the end of the day, these features and this price will not suit everyone’s needs or budget. If are on the look out for a high end controller and do have the money to splash out then this could definitely be considered the best controller for you.

The Nacon Revolution X Pro Controller is one of the studier gamepads we’ve had our hands on recently, and it has exceptional build quality and a satisfying weight to it. Its suite of adjustability and customization options (both physically and through software) offers functionality comparable to high-end Esports controllers (like the Xbox Elite 2) for a fraction of their asking price.

You not only benefit from being able to swap out thumbstick heads, or adding or subtracting movement from your analog sticks but there is also the option to restrict trigger feedback too which can prove instrumental in certain competitive game genres. On the audio front, it’s also nice to see Dolby Atmos present and accounted for, and while your tweaking options are a little on the thin side, the sound that comes through the Nacon Revolution X Pro Controller (through all the headsets tested) was suitably impressive.

7. Nintendo Switch Pro Controller

The PC controller with a great battery life

Specifications

Wireless: YesPowered by: Lithium-ion internal packBattery life: Approximately 40 hours

Reasons to buy

+40-hour battery life +Weighty feel+Simple connection

Reasons to avoid

-Expensive for what it is

The best part of this controller is definitely the battery life on offer here. Most people will be used to the average lifespan of gamepads – such as the DualShock 4 lasting between 4-8 hours with moderate use. Whereas the Nintendo Switch Pro controller can last up to 40 hours on just a single 6 hour charge! The difference here is astounding and can be reason enough for many to get their hands on this controller.

If you’ve had hands-on experience with the ill-fated Wii U pro controller, then the look and feel should be somewhat familiar to you. We found the weight and sturdiness of this gamepad to be comfortable enough over long periods of time. It should be noted, it’s a touch heavier than both Sony and Microsoft’s current generation offerings, but that dissipated quickly.

It is another asymmetrical controller, which is something worth noting if you’re on the look out for that familiar PlayStation feel.

The best affordable Esports PC Controller

Specifications

Wireless : NoPowered by: USBBattery life: N/A

Reasons to buy

+Clicky buttons +Rugged feel +Responsive feedback

Reasons to avoid

-Wire doesn’t detach

If you’ve been in the market for a solid E-sports gamepad – but didn’t want to spend in excess of $150 – then you should find that the V2 proves its metal from the offset. Tweaking and tinkering really is the name of the game with this modular controller; especially for its ‘mecha’ tactile buttons – which were satisfyingly clicky in our testing – and the adjustable sensitivity of the two analog sticks.

It is wired, however, something that may not gel with those looking to sit a decent distance away. If you play a lot of fighting games with a pad – as I do – you should feel right at home with the options afforded to you. At just a touch over the MSRP of the standard Xbox gamepad, it’s worth a second look if these features are appealing to you.

1. Xbox One Elite Wireless Controller Series 2

The best premium controller for Xbox One

Specifications

Connection: Bluetooth, USB-CCustomization: Thumbsticks, trigger locks, 4 paddles, D-PadAudio: 3.5mmWeight: 345gBattery: Rechargeable, up to 40 hours

Reasons to buy

+Excellent industrial design+Programmable buttons+Additional rear buttons

Reasons to avoid

-Cheaper competitors are starting to offer the same features

If you want precision and exceptionally high build-quality, you want the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2. With programmable buttons, back paddles, and thumbsticks that can be swapped for performance-targeted alternatives, this is one of the best Xbox One controllers available. It’s also an improvement on the original Elite in almost every way.

We found that most of these improvements were on the software side. Sure, you’re picking up a more durable piece of kit, and we were particularly enamored with the textured surface that now spans the whole grip, but it’s the under-the-hood customization that really wowed us. We were able to completely remap the entire gamepad, all with a new slew of input options. Add the ability to tweak individual analog stick tension and lower travel distance in each button and the whole thing feels far more premium than the original model.

Needless to say, this superb device builds on all the excellent qualities of the standard Xbox One wireless controller (namely the excellent d-pad and responsive shoulder buttons) while adding a huge amount of customization options and additional features along the way. The clicky rear paddles are fantastic, a great way to rebind controls that normally live on the d-pad to a spot you can reach without having to lift off the analog sticks, and being able to swap the function of literally every button means you can tailor the Elite to suit your personal play style. It looks, feels, and plays like a truly premium controller, and even tops our roundup of the best controllers for PC gaming (opens in new tab).

2. Razer Wolverine Ultimate

The best third-party pro controller

Specifications

Reasons to buy

+Reliable Razer build+Interchangeable thumbsticks and d-pads+Onboard media controllers

Reasons to avoid

-Pricey

If you fancy a pro controller and are open to the idea of buying from third-party manufacturers, Razer’s Wolverine Ultimate is a very respectable choice. Razer produces a whole roster of Xbox One accessories and this entry is a high-quality handset decked out with a lot of cool features. Additionally, it’s a bit more versatile than Microsoft’s Elite Series 2.

Besides interchangeable thumbsticks and d-pads, the Wolverine Ultimate also throws in four extra back buttons and two bonus shoulder buttons so you never have to take your thumbs off the sticks. That’s a huge advantage in shooters – you can respond a few milliseconds faster than your opponent.

Meanwhile, eye-catching Razer Chroma lighting helps it stand out even more. The onboard media controllers are a nice touch as well.

The best Xbox headset

Specifications

Acoustic design: Closed BackCable length: 4.3ft / 1.3mDrivers: 40mmWeight: 13 ozCompatibility: Xbox One, PS4, PC, Switch, Mac, Mobile

Reasons to buy

+Dual-wireless connectivity+Exceptional sound quality+Long-lasting comfort+Optional wired support

Reasons to avoid

-Somewhat garish headband-Mic isn’t detachable

Want the very best Xbox One headset (opens in new tab)? You want the SteelSeries Arctis 9X. Specially engineered to run wirelessly on the console, it offers superb audio to go with its very respectable battery-life. Because of that trademark SteelSeries headband, this is also a headset you can use for hours without getting uncomfortable – it’s fairly light at 1.2lbs / 372g.

Of course, we all expect excellent audio from a premium piece of kit like this, but the SteelSeries Arctis 9X stood out in our testing for another reason; connectivity. You’re able to connect via Bluetooth and Xbox Wireless at the same time here – perfect for keeping in touch with your phone or music while playing. In our testing, everything was as streamlined as advertized, and we never encountered any interference or connection drops.

We were a little disappointed that the included mic, while being clear and accurate, was retractable rather than removable. It’s a small design gripe, but one that shows just how far this headset is ingrained in its gaming use. Such a feature, along with the green lines etched into the headband, mean this headset won’t exactly fit right in on your commute.

However, just a little further down that headband, you’ll find some seriously comfortable cups. The sweat-resistant nylon “AirWeave” cushions have been touted to improve airflow by SteelSeries, and we agree. In all our Apex Legends rages, we never felt pinching or a sense of clammy claustrophobia from these cups, and longer sessions were a breeze because of it.

Overall, then? This is a great choice if you’re looking for a high-quality gaming headset for Xbox.

2. Turtle Beach Stealth 700 Gen 2

The best Xbox One headset for comfort seekers

Specifications

Acoustic design: Closed Back, over earDrivers: 50mm NanoclearWeight: 382gCompatibility: PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC

Reasons to buy

+Doubles battery life from the previous generation+Incredibly comfortable +Great microphone accuracy

Reasons to avoid

-Might be a tight fit for some

The Turtle Beach Stealth 700 Gen 2 improves upon previous iterations in a number of ways. From improved memory foam cushions with Aerofit cooling to larger drivers capable of pumping out some incredible sound, these are one of the best Xbox One accessories on the market right now.

The comfort adjustments mean you’ll be covered for long play sessions here without any ear pinching or frustration for those who wear glasses. There’s some serious bass to contend with here, which offers up a pounding accompaniment to more fast-paced action experiences. Plus, you’re getting Superhuman Hearing mode to emphasize those finer details in online shooters.

Turtle Beach claims a solid 20 hours of battery life on a single charge here, and in our initial testing sessions, there was still gas in the tank after 16 hours so we’re comfortable that real-world use is up to standard. We were also impressed by the microphone’s ability to capture higher tones and replicate them without making voices sound tinny; something that we regularly run into with similarly priced models.

The overall design of the Turtle Beach Stealth 700 Gen 2 also lends itself better to those who don’t want that overt ‘gamer’ aesthetic. Thankfully, there’s a far more subtle design here, and we appreciated the swap from Xbox green accents to platinum silver.

Thanks to gel-cooled ear cushions, and a roomy headband, we were most impressed by the longevity of the comfort here. Longer testing sessions didn’t pose any threats to these luxurious cups, leaving us to concentrate on the Apex Legends at hand.

3. Microsoft Xbox Wireless Headset

The best official Xbox headset

Specifications

Acoustic design: Closed backDrivers: 40mmWeight: 312gComaptibility: Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC

Reasons to buy

+Great bass and surround sound+Great price+Clear mic for mutiplayer

Reasons to avoid

-Mic monitoring could be better-Might be too small for larger heads

Microsoft has launched its own headset, the official Xbox Wireless headset for both Xbox Series X and Xbox One. Not only does it offer a high quality audio experience with the comfort to match, but it manages to pack all those features in to a simply $99 / £89 price tag as well. You’ll find this model at the top of our guide to the best Xbox Series X headsets, but it’s fully compatible with the older model as well.

Official Xbox accessories can be hit and miss, by the very virtue that they’re often the first to be released alongside a console and can therefore miss out on crucial development time once players have their boxes set up. However, in all our testing we couldn’t fault this set for its value offering. That’s a particularly low price point compared to the rest of the premium market, and you’re still getting some solid performance and features packed in.

In truth, we were expecting the Xbox Wireless headset to follow the traditional route of official accessories; offering simple functionality and sub-par audio quality, while relying on its brand name to see it through early sales. However, we were impressed by the out of the box quality in our own testing, noting how these cups were particularly adept at handling wider soundscapes like those of Red Dead Redemption 2, for example. There’s detailed surround sound in here, and a surprising clarity.

Like the SteelSeries Arctis 9X, the Xbox Wireless headset also offers dual-connectivity via Xbox Wireless and Bluetooth to boot. That’s a seriously tempting feature on this spec sheet, especially at a mid-range price point.

That’s exceptional value for money when you take into account the sheer volume of games you’re getting and that’s exactly what makes it one of the best Xbox One accessories going. It also means you don’t have to worry about picking up Xbox Live for your online gaming needs.

To save you a bit of cash, we’ve listed the most up-to-date reductions on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate below.

You won’t get far without Xbox Live, so it definitely earns the top spot on this list. Want to venture into online multiplayer by yourself or with friends? You can forget it without this subscription service. We’d recommend picking up the 12-month membership as a result – that’s the best value for money in the long term.

There are other benefits to take advantage of outside multiplayer, too; members of Xbox Live get access to regular discounts. They also receive free games each month via the ‘Games with Gold’ initiative. That in itself makes the price tag worth paying.

How we test Xbox One accessories

Xbox One accessories aren’t exactly a dying breed. Thanks to the fact that Xbox Series X gear can also be used on the previous generation, there’s still plenty of kit to sort through. However, if we’re recommending a product for Xbox One you can bet that we’ve tested it on that console specifically. We’re yet to come across an Xbox Series X gadget that doesn’t work as advertized on an older system, but the threat still lurks. That’s why we test everything across both consoles, and PC where appropriate, to make sure you’re getting the best value for money possible.

Beyond that, you can find out exactly how we test gaming headsets and how we test controllers with our dedicated guides – and find out how we make all our recommendations with the full GamesRadar+ Hardware Policy.
