]]>Interestingly, McFarlane paid homage to himself the very next month in Amazing Spider-Man #301 (opens in new tab).
Anyway, the Venom cover is part of 10 January Marvel covers featuring contemporary artists paying homage to iconic Marvel covers from the past. Other artists contributing cover include Will Sliney, Mike McKone, Creees Lee, Philip Tan, David Nakayama, Pete Woods, Ken Lashley, Stephen Mooney, and Peach Momoko,
Most of the covers are themed around famous first appearances including the debuts of Spider-Man, the Hulk, Thor, and Wolverine.
Here’s a look at all ten covers in four galleries along with the release date, title and issue #, artist, and the original issue the new cover pays homage to.

Aquaman 80th Anniversary 100-Page Super Spectacular (opens in new tab) goes on sale August 31 to recognize the King of Atlantis’s first appearance in November 1941’s More Fun Comics #73 (opens in new tab).
Not bad for a hero often ridiculed for being the guy who talks to fish.
Here is a list of all the stories in Aquaman 80th Anniversary 100-Page Super Spectacular, as well as who created them:
Here is is the complete ‘The Rhine Maidens’ story DC has shared as a preview:

Aquaman 80th Anniversary 100-Page Super Spectacular #1 will celebrate not just Arthur Curry, but also his associated characters such as Mera, Tempest, Aqualad, Black Manta, and Ocean Master.
And in a pleasant surprise, Aquaman 80th Anniversary 100-Page Super Spectacular will also include the return of an Aquaman variant: Bombshells Aquaman. He’s from the fondly remembered Elseworlds series DC Comics Bombshells, which reimagined the DCU characters in the style of ’40s pin-up models and post-World War II ephemera.
Like previous 100-page 80th anniversary specials, Aquaman’s cover price will be $9.99, along with card stock variant cover editions that will set you back another buck.
Speaking of variant covers, in addition to the main cover by Ivan Reis and Joe Prado, Aquaman’s will sport a line-up of eight ‘decade’ themed variants depicting the ‘marine monarch’ (is that a new one?) sporting his different looks through the years.
The line-up includes Michael Cho (’40s), Ramon Fradon (’50s), Walt Simonson (’60s), José Luis García-López (’70s), Chuck Patton/Kevin Nowlan (’80s), Yvel Guichet (’90s), Becky Cloonan (’00s), and Robson Rocha (’10s).

This is the first in a rising tide of Aquaman-related comic books coming from DC. Arthur Curry co-stars in the upcoming limited series Aquaman/Green Arrow: Deep Target (opens in new tab), and his protege Aqualad is manning up in Aquaman: The Becoming. Aqualad’s dad will also be getting a solo series with Black Manta (yes, that’s also the original Aquaman’s arch-nemesis – it’s complicated).
Aquaman 80th Anniversary 100-Page Super Spectacular goes on sale on August 31.

]]>The post Archie Comics co-president Alex Segura joins Oni-Lion Forge appeared first on Game News.
]]>Segura will reportedly begin May 24 and will oversee Oni-Lion Forge’s publicity, marketing, and sales efforts across various channels in addition to “bringing over fifteen years of editorial, executive, and new business development experience to the company,” according to the official announcement.
“While it’s been an amazing honor and privilege to call Riverdale my professional and creative home for over a decade, when Oni-Lion Forge approached me with this opportunity, I couldn’t say no,” Segura says in the announcement. “Getting the chance to help amplify the ever-expanding, talented, and diverse voices at Oni is a great fit, and I’m so excited to be part of the team behind some of my favorite comics ever. Looking forward to diving in and spreading the word on all things Oni.”
Segura brings a deep and diverse resume in the comic book industry over nearly two decades to Oni-Forge, including three stints at Archie (beginning in 2004) and two at DC.
His most recent tenure at Archie Comics began in 2014 and he’s served as its co-president since 2017.
A former staff writer for the Miami Herald and remembered well at Newsarama for his years as an accomplished freelance contributor, Segura also has written comic books for Archie like Archie Meets KISS (opens in new tab) and other publishers and is also a prolific crime and mystery novelist including the Peter Fernandez Miami Mystery (opens in new tab) series.
Oni-Lion Forge is the publishing entity formed by the 2019 merger of Lion Forge Comics and long-time independent comic book publisher Oni Press.
“Not unlike what Dwayne Johnson delivers to blockbuster movies, Alex brings experience, talent, and charisma unmatched in comics publishing,” adds James Lucas Jones, Publisher of Oni-Lion Forge. “His track record of smart decision-making is a matter of public record and his many long relationships across virtually all vectors of our business gives him a uniquely advantageous position in our industry. He brings so much to the team that it’s impossible to list. We”d be here all day.”
While Archie Meets KISS didn’t make the top 10, two Archie crossovers did make Newsarama’s list of the most unlikely comic book crossovers ever.

“The top-selling cover artist recently depicted many of Marvel’s biggest stars for an entire line of Upper Deck trading cards,” reads Marvel’s announcement. “Now these popular anime-inspired art pieces will serve as variant covers on some of your favorite ongoing series this July! From Captain Marvel to Groot, Peach Momoko once again brings Marvel’s heroes to life in her iconic style…”
“It was a lot of fun doing the entire Upper Deck Marvel Anime (opens in new tab) base set,” Momoko says. “It allowed me to learn and explore and draw many Marvel characters that I never knew about.”
There will be 12 covers in the series, all but one seen below, including:

Aside from being one of Marvel’s biggest rising cover artists, Momoko is currently lending her talents as both artist and writer to Demon Days, a series of one-shots that reimagine popular Marvel characters through a lens of Japanese folklore.
The first Demon Days one-shot, Demon Days: X-Men, brought several characters back to the days of feudal Japan in a fantasy-inspired tale. The next Demon Days one-shot, June’s Demon Days: Mariko, takes things in a slightly different direction with a more modern fantasy setting for its folkloric twist on Marvel’s characters.
Many of the characters featured in the variant covers factor into the 10 greatest Marvel stories of all time.

]]>The post Marvel Heroes Reborn 2021: Character mash-ups are the key appeared first on Game News.
]]>
(opens in new tab)
Following this week’s previous teases of a return to the concept of Heroes Reborn for the 1996-97 story’s 25th anniversary, the character art Marvel has now debuted hints that the story, whatever form it takes, may have some thematic commonalities with other stories Marvel has told in recent years.
With eight images released, it appears that most of the characters featured in the new Heroes Reborn will be some kind of mash-ups of known Marvel characters, though it’s unclear whether they’ll be some kind of ‘amalgam’ style combinations of origins and powers as Marvel’s previous Infinity Warps concept which mashed-up characters into totally new heroes, or if there will be another story explanation.

(opens in new tab)
The first is an apparent mash-up Doctor Doom and Juggernaut, with the character wearing armor that, while somewhat shaped like Juggernaut’s massive helmet and gear, stylistically resembles Doom’s armor. The character seems to have the Gem of Cyttorak, the source of Juggernaut’s power, embedded in his chest piece.
The second image appears to be a mash-up of Wanda Maximoff, the Scarlet Witch, and the Asgardian villain the Enchantress, who has often used her powers to try and charm the Avengers. The character wears an outfit similar to Wanda’s classic gear, complete with the funky headpiece, though she’s in Enchantress’s green and black color scheme. It’s worth noting that Scarlet Witch’s brother Quicksilver has often worn green as well, so there may be another angle to this one.

(opens in new tab)
The third image shows Reed Richards and Ben Grimm (in his human guise) apparently as agents of SHIELD – a story holdover from the original Heroes Reborn. Though not distinctly a ‘mash-up’ per se, the images does combine the concepts of the Fantastic Four and SHIELD.
Then there’s an image of Peter Parker taking pictures of a mostly unseen hero from the roof of the Daily Bugle, implying a Jimmy Olsen-esque role for someone else. Again, not strictly a mash-up on its face, but we also haven’t seen more than the yellow boots of the hero he’s photographing. (Maybe a version of Tony Stark/Iron Man? He’s been Peter’s mentor in the past and the color scheme adds up).

(opens in new tab)
There’s an image of Thanos apparently wearing at least five of the Mandarin’s ten rings of power (Thanos + Mandarin = Manos the Hands of Fate? MST3K fans understand).
Though in comic books there are six Infinity Stones and ten Makluan rings of power wielded by the Mandarin (each with their own unique abilities combining alien science and magic), a mash-up of the pair could feasibly also include a mash-up of their unique power artifacts.
And it’s worth noting that, given his previous predilections for altering reality, any mash-up that’s half or part Thanos could have a hand – or gauntlet – in the rebirthing of reality.

(opens in new tab)
The image featuring the Hulk poses its own sort of mystery beyond the story it’s teasing. In this case, somewhat similar to the Peter Parker image, there’s not much of an apparent mash-up going on (though there are clues that this is not the Hulk we know and love).
For one thing, he’s smiling, and not especially menacingly – a rarity for ol’ Jade Jaws, who in most cases is notably angry (it’s like his whole thing). Then there are the monsters he’s facing off with, which have a distinct ’70s superhero sci-fi feel – but even us comic book eggheads at Newsarama can’t quite put our finger on where they may originate, or if they’re simply paying homage to a certain style.
Weirdly, it appears as though Hulk may be in some way draining the creatures, with the yellow/green color palette shifting between Hulk’s hand and the creature’s scales – though it could be us reading into a quirk of the piece’s lighting. But maybe that’s an indicator he’s got something in common with his old foe Absorbing Man?
Got a good guess, Hulkamaniacs? We’re all ears on Twitter and Facebook.

(opens in new tab)
The last two teasers feature Phil Coulson in what appears to be his campaign for the Presidency of the United States along with a couple of instances of his apparent slogan “He’s Unique” (which no doubt has some story meaning).
And then finally there is Wolverine along with a team of modified Alpha Flight characters. Logan’s somewhat cybernetic modifications don’t ring any bells, nor do Aurora or Sasquatch’s new looks.
The mystical character could perhaps be a mash-up of Shaman and Doctor Strange, while the armored character seems like a version of Guardian/Vindicator crossed with Cable, maybe?

(opens in new tab)
Interestingly enough, several of the characters including Peter Parker, Juggernaut, and Thanos did not play roles in the original Heroes Reborn, indicating this story will go beyond the scope of the original.
As for how these characters might fit together or how the new Heroes Reborn will look, that remains to be seen. But check out a gallery of all of the teasers below.

]]>Creators telling new stories to mark the anniversary in the $9.99 special include Geoff Johns, Ivan Reis, Gary Frank, James Tynion IV, Ron Marz, Darryl Banks, Peter Tomasi, Robert Venditti, and others. The special also includes the final original story written by the late Denny O’Neil, who passed away earlier this month (opens in new tab).
‘Time Alone,’ featuring art by legendary Green Arrow artist Mike Grell, reunites Green Lantern Hal Jordan with Oliver Queen in a flashback story from their days as ‘Hard Travelin’ Heroes.’

(opens in new tab)
“A particularly violent encounter with the villain Clock King puts Hal and Ollie back out on the open road, both of them reexamining how they fight crime, and how a different approach could make them both better heroes,” reads DC’s description.
‘Hard Travelin’ Heroes’ is of course the colloquial title of O’Neil and Neal Adams ’70s run on Green Lantern in what’s also known as the socially-conscious ‘Green Lantern/Green Arrow’ era.
The story arc introduced a revolutionary new approach to comic books (opens in new tab), one concerned with social and political issues of the day – “what many people now are referring to as ‘woke’ culture,” according to the publisher.
From racial conflict to urban issues to the drug addiction of Oliver Queen’s young sidekick Speedy, the title didn’t shy away from difficult topics, and it influenced years of socially relevant comic books throughout the industry.
In honor of O’Neil’s final story for DC, the publisher has provided a free online preview of ‘Time Alone,’ available for reading here (opens in new tab).

]]>The post Witness the birth of DCs Robin King in Death Metal #2 first look appeared first on Game News.
]]>So says Dark Nights: Death Metal #2 writer Scott Snyder on Twitter, and now DC has come through with some visuals of what that means.
Robin King is a character that has been teased for months by Snyder and DC, and the publisher has confirmed the character will debut – or someone will transform into – this Robin King in July 14’s second issue of the event.
“Get ready to scream…with excitement! More mysteries of the Dark Multiverse will be revealed in July’s Dark Nights: Death Metal #2! Along with a hallmark Jay Garrick and Wally West reunion, Wonder Woman and Swamp Thing will roar across the horrifying Dark Multiverse landscape alongside Batman, Jonah Hex and Harley Quinn!” reads DC’s official description of the issue.

(opens in new tab)
“Can the remaining survivors of Perpetua’s grand design stand each other long enough to form a plan and take back the planet? Plus, what’s Lobo doing in space, who is the Robin King, and when will the Darkest Knight appear?” the description continues. “Don’t miss the second chapter of the wildest ride in the DC universe, hitting shelves on July 14 from the epic team of Scott Snyder, Greg Capullo, Jonathan Glapion and FCO Plascencia!”
The identity of Robin King – and his place in the DCU – is especially important since the (spoilers ahead) apparent death of the Batman Who Laughs in Death Metal #1. As DC frames it today, Death Metal #2 will be “the quiet, chilling beginning to the Robin King’s reign!”
“What the Robin King whispers in response to his invitation to ascend beyond groblinhood will haunt you!” DC’s promotional copy reads.

Coloured by Italian artist Giulia Brusco and lettered by Anne Parkhouse, “The Man Comes Around”will be published in Judge Dredd Megazine #344, which is available from Wednesday 15 January. It will be available day-and-date digital from the 2000 AD iPad app and DRM-free from the 2000 AD webshop, as well as in print in the UK and via Diamond in North America.
