As per Deadline (opens in new tab), Nick Zano and Shelley Hennig will play Chad McKnight and Ava Winters respectively. Zano is perhaps best known for his turn as Nate in DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. Shelley Hennig has appeared in the likes of Teen Wolf, Apple’s Mythic Quest, and Netflix’s impossibly-long-titled The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window.

Obliterated is worlds away from the Karate Kid legacy sequel which brought Hurwitz, Schlossberg, and Heald some deserved kudos over on Netflix, instead focusing on more adult-themed hijinks and upping the stakes beyond who has the best dojo in the valley.

The official logline from Netflix (opens in new tab) reads, “Obliterated is a high octane action-comedy that tells the story of an elite special forces team who thwarts a deadly threat to Las Vegas. After their celebratory party, filled with booze, drugs and sex, the team discovers that the bomb they deactivated was a fake. The now intoxicated team has to fight through their impairments, overcome their personal issues, find the real bomb, and save the world.”

Zano’s character, according to the industry trade is “the head of an elite SEAL team” who is loved by them “despite his reputation for being a wild guy on and off the job.” Ava, meanwhile, is a little more strait-laced “but the book gets thrown out the window when she and the team have to go back to work while impaired.”

Details have emerged of a new project involving Cobra Kai’s Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald based on the History Channel’s Ancient Aliens documentary, perhaps best known for the “aliens” meme of the early 2010s (via The Hollywood Reporter (opens in new tab)).

It’s being described as “a two-handed, globe-spanning adventure featuring ancient sites and artifacts, confronting the theories and questions raised by the popular docuseries.” Heald – who also directed the kick-ass Cobra Kai season 3 ending – is set to helm the project, while writing duties will be handled by Chaotic Good founder Luke Ryan.

No casting or story info at this early stage, though if the original History Channel series is any indication then everything from underground extra-terrestrials to doomsday prophecies is fair game. Essentially, the entire weird and wonderful world of conspiracy theories will be open to the figures who helped marshal the Karate Kid sequel series into becoming one of Netflix’s most popular shows this year. That’s certainly no bad thing.

It’s unknown how much, if any, impact this will have on Cobra Kai. Cobra Kai season 4 is currently filming – with a few faces now promoted to series regulars – and the story is all set up for a climactic ending. However, the creators have previously said their next season isn’t the last if they have anything to do with it. But, now the aliens have whisked them away, they might not have a say in the matter…

“So, we’ve been working on the scripts for season 4 for a few months now,” Hurwitz says. “They’re all coming in. The whole season has been planned out in great detail. We have, in our possession, eight scripts right now. About five of them are sort of in their ‘ready to shoot’ place. The final two scripts, we have detailed outlines, and we’ll have scripts either by the end of [2020], or at the very beginning of [2021].”

The scripts, then, are roughly 80% done – and filming is set to follow shortly, despite the continued pandemic.

“We hope to be shooting the show in the coming months,” Hurwitz revealed. “We’re still figuring out some of the specifics, but the intent is for early [2021], to get back on set, with all the COVID protocols in place, and to get back to some karate ass-kicking in the valley.”

With how the Cobra Kai season 3 ending sets up a tournament for the ages, it’s great to hear that there’s not going to be a major break in production for next season. No release date yet, but we’ll be sure to update you if we hear anything official.

In the short scene, Daniel is struggling with his role as a mentor of Miyagi-Do’s students. This follows in the wake of the Cobra Kai season 2 ending, which saw one of his proteges – Robby – kick Miguel over a railing during an all-out karate war at West Valley High. Kumiko, though, is there to offer some advice – and a way to reconnect with Miyagi. She even ends the clip by teasing that she has a way to make that happen.

In a particularly poignant moment, Daniel reveals he is now the same age that his sensei, Mr. Miyagi, was during the events of The Karate Kid. While the show has never shied away from introducing a new generation of characters (and fans) to the karate shenanigans in Reseda and Encino, it has continually brought up the past to help guide its character.

Netflix has also recently offered a taste of things to come in Cobra Kai season 3. New images show differing fates for Daniel and Johnny – as well as Miguel and Robby. But fans of Karate Kid Part 2 will, I’m sure, be pleased to see another familiar face crop up.
