When putting a projector indoors, there’s a reasonable chance of having a white wall that the image will look great on. Outside, this is less likely. So not only is the TMY V08 great value in itself, but it includes a free 100-inch screen sheet, saving you having to buy one separately. It’s a small touch, but a very useful one that few brands provide.

It’s a bright outdoor projector which will give as good an image and clear sound as you’ll find in this price range. Some users have reported issues having all areas of the screen in focus but this is only noticeable if you’re using it as a secondary monitor with lots of text, and not something which interferes with your home drive-in watching pleasure.  It’s well worth the low price.

The XGIMI Halo+ is a great outdoor projector that boasts a bright 1080p picture, quick auto-keystone and focus, and a very decent battery life of almost three hours. Bright enough to watch in any light, by dusk you can get huge images that belay the small size of the unit. Setup is a breeze with really fast auto-keystoning and focus giving perfect picture from a range of angles, and the built-in stand further helps position the image. 

Built-in Android OS makes it ideal for streaming films or shows while out and about, although it suffers from the usual lack of Netflix compatibility. It’s also great for casual gaming, with a Game Mode offering 26.5ms input lag and 60Hz refresh rate – although those chasing the best and fastest will want even quicker. 

Twin 5W Harmon Kardon speakers give excellent crisp sound which fills a room well without needing any external help. At just 1.6kg it will easily slip into a bag, and the hard black plastic feels like it will stand up well to transportation, although it is a surprise that there isn’t a carry case included.

The BenQ GS50 is a terrific candidate for the best outdoor projector this year, and is one of your top premium choices should you be looking to splash out. BenQ claims the 2.1 Bluetooth sound is a first for a portable smart projector, and it’s likely the loudest we’ve heard on a portable projector. Volume was kept below 10 out of 50 at home for the most part in our testing, but even when cranked right up to full volume there was no noticeable distortion – so you can listen outdoors without the need for extra speakers.

It’s truly built for portability, with a hard-wearing outer case that is splash resistant, is drop tested to about two feet (or “carrying height”), and comes with a smart carry case. We found the battery to last well over two hours, but this can be stretched out to almost three, while you can also charge via a USB-C power brick. 

The HD picture is crisp with good colour reproduction. There’s no game mode and input lag is measured at 62ms – not noticeable unless you’re a competitive gamer but showing that gaming isn’t the focus of the GS50. You could get a higher-end home projector for this money, and although it’s more than fine for casual home watching, the features mean this has to be, first and foremost, a front runner for the best outdoor projector money can buy right now.

Convenience is key here – the L21 is quick to set up and a glance at the simple and unfussy remote reflects the commitment to keeping things simple. BDPower boasts about the quality of its dual-fan cooling system, but the drawback is that this fan noise means both speakers will have to be turned up loud to drown it out.

If you’re worried your small or narrow garden doesn’t have room for a projector, you need short throw.  The wide lens of the Optoma GT1080 can give huge images even when close to the projection surface, opening up viewing possibilities in the cosiest space.

It also boosts a gaming mode with minimal input lag. Most projectors will be fine for the majority of gamers, but the hardcore – particularly those who play online – will need something as responsive as the GT1080.

The only real niggle with this is that lacks a full USB input, with only a mini USB slot, which means you’ll need a device which outputs HDMI rather than popping a Fire Stick straight in, for example.

The Benq GV1 is a robust portable unit that gives decent picture for a projector the size of a pint glass that you can take anywhere. It’s not a home cinema experience or even full HD but this is about portability rather than perfect picture. The most impressive thing is the brightness when plugged in – excellent for any unit let alone one this size. A solid three-hour battery life gives plenty of viewing time when out and about – but you’ll need to have media downloaded to the device you cast from if you’re not on a wifi connection.

It’s built solidly and will stand up to transportation, plus the solid plastic looks the part and is neat and clean in design to boot. It runs Android OS and most streaming apps are readily available for download with good casting from phones, tablets, and wifi. The downsides: the sound is good but doesn’t offer quite enough volume. It’s frustratingly fiddly to set up, with very sensitive zoom control and D-pad keyboard input, but it’s easy to cast to it to once set up, and auto-keystoning is helpful. There is notable input lag when playing games which require precise timing, although for a casual play of a slower-paced game it’ll be adequate.

BenQ is one of the biggest names in projectors because they offer great quality at a price well below similarly specced competitors. The TK850 gives true 4K UHD for incredibly sharp pictures and intense, detailed color. Its 3000 lumens mean this unit is incredibly bright and will be watchable when other projectors are still waiting for nightfall, while the backlit remote means you’ll still be able to change settings in the dark.

For anyone who wants to replace the full stadium experience while the stands are empty, the TK850 is made for whatever sport you’ve been missing. It has custom sports modes, helped by its low lag so you can watch even the fastest matches seamlessly. This includes sound settings, which gives you every bit of the dubbed crowd or shout from the pitch through its chambered 10W speakers. Projector speakers can be a mixed bag but these are loud and clear enough to not require dragging a sound system outside.

It’s a simple unit to set up, and as well as vertical keystoning offers a lens shift wheel to move the image up or down – making it easier to get a great picture when you don’t have the perfect spot for it to rest. The only downside is that the input lag of 83ms is slower than the ideal for gaming, although it would take a keen eye to spot this. At the premium end of the spectrum, this is the best outdoor projector.

8. Epson EB-S41

A solid unit in the mid-range of projectors, the EB-S41 is bright and reliable. Epson is a brand pitched a little more towards business rather than pleasure, and there is something about the unit which looks more at home in the office than home or garden, but that’s not something to worry about when you’re watching its great picture. It offers WiFi connectivity and casting, although you need an additional accessory for this.

The carry case helps you to easily take it out into the garden and store it safely when not in use, or for if you’re sick of being the host and want to make someone else’s back yard a cinema. One of the few models in this price range to offer horizontal and vertical keystoning make it easier to set up in new places too. However, the native 4:3 aspect ratio shoes this may be more of an office projector you can use for outdoor viewing rather than a genuine video specialist.

9. Anker Nebula Capsule II

At the size of a large drinking glass, the Anker Nebula Capsule II is slightly bigger than its predecessor but upgrades on it in several ways. It now has Android TV installed which means all your favorite streaming apps can run on it (although you need a quick workaround to install Netflix). Set up is a breeze as you can connect your Android phone to import WiFi and app account details, and even use the phone as a controller rather than needing to type using the remote. Automatic focus and keystoning means you’ve got a clear picture fast.

If you’re venturing out to camp, be sure to pack this. You can take it anywhere with three hours of video playback (30 hours of music) on a single charge and 8GB of storage (plus a USB port for a memory stick or external hard drive). The picture isn’t the sharpest, brightest, or the biggest, with a throw distance of about 60cm to 3m (around two to ten feet), but this can be used anywhere, in seconds. This isn’t about perfect high fidelity, this is about fun and portability. 

10. GooDee Upgraded Video Projector

When I last bought a projector in 2017, I was warned off anything in this price range.  But the GooDee Upgraded’s glowing reviews and status as one of the top sellers on Amazon shows that affordable LED projectors are no longer a huge quality drop off from lamp units twice the cost.

There are some practical issues. A lack of display size control means you’ll have to move the projector forward and backward to control the image dimensions. A three setting front leg instead of a screw means a lack of precision in height controls, making it more likely you’ll have to balance strategically sized books under the front of the unit to set the height of the projection. But with sharp, bright picture and stereo sound through good speakers at this price, compromises can be made!

11. Vamvo L6200 Native

A great alternative budget outdoor projector

The Vamvo is particularly stylish for the price, with a smart-looking case to make carrying around the light unit even easier. The visuals on screen are the most important thing to look at of course, but it delivers here too, at up to 200 inches of great picture in good conditions. The LEDs are suitably bright without too much heat, so this is a projector that can come out at dusk rather than once night has fully set in.

The digital keystoning tool on the back is a nice touch, and the ability to alter this horizontally as well as vertically makes it easier to set up in locations others might struggle with, very useful as many gardens don’t have that perfect spot for a projector! The speaker is more than passable if you don’t want to lug out a sound system every time you use it. The only drawback is that the controls on top of the unit can be a little fiddly, so don’t lose the remote.

12. Vankyo Leisure 3 Projector

Budget brand Vankyo shows just how fast projector technology is moving, and how much cheaper it’s getting. The most recent Leisure 3 is 6% brighter than previous models and has 2400 lumens for great picture quality of up to 170inches. It even comes with a carry case for ease of transport or to safely store it inside when not in use. And carrying or storing a device this small will be easy.

At this end of the market, you’re going to need to wait until the sun is down, but if you’re on a budget or just want something for occasional use and full HD imagery is less important to you than the excitement of getting your own garden projector, this may be the perfect entry point.

13. Optoma UHD51/UHD51A

We are living in a horrible dystopian future, so why not get the fun side of sci-fi and have a projector which has full Alexa capability? Link it up to your smart home and control your projector with your voice while you flip sausages on the barbeque? 

The UHD51 has a fantastic 4K UHD picture and for watching anything from bright Pixar movies to darker films like Bladerunner 2049, with incredible depth of blacks, often a weak spot of home projectors.

This projector isn’t without minor flaws though: the 5W speaker is weak, especially given that this unit is noisy. It can be hard to hear over its own fan at times, let alone a noisy child singing along to Frozen 2. The range of modes it offers isn’t the most useful either, and it can be hard to tell what the difference between them is. What does make this stand out is the 3D capability, a trick Optoma always does very well, if only in 1080p here. These slight negatives do not take away from the whole package though, as the UHD51A is still a seriously quality Optoma projector.

A final note: The UHD51A model is different from the UHD51 by virtue of that Alexa compatibility. The former is more prevalent in the US and the latter in the UK.

14. GooDee G500

A good budget unit which won’t overheat

A perennial drawback with outdoor projectors, especially in the summer, is the heat they give out. Personally, the heat of mine indoors stops me using on summer days. But the Goodee G500’s LED light rather than a traditional lamp runs with little heat, making it ideal for an outdoor unit. Anyone whose phone has overheated and shut down in the last few weeks knows how annoying hot tech in the sun is!

The picture here isn’t perfect, 720p rather than 1080p, but it gives beautiful images.  While it advertises a picture up to 180 inches, image quality does drop noticeably before you get there.  If you only have 4k sources but want to dip your toe in the projector water, don’t worry; it downscales well without the visual issues some cheaper projectors have with this. It’s also got a wide range of inputs, should you need to connect something pre-HDMI. The inbuilt speaker is poor and you’ll need external ones to plugin but that’s often to be expected at this price point.

BenQ’s GS50 was released in October 2021 but now is the perfect time to pick one up for a great summer of outdoor viewing. BenQ has long been a leading name in projection and has made a fuss about this launch: boasting that the GS50 is the first smart portable outdoor projector with 2.1-channel Bluetooth audio. Is it a leap forward for portable projection?

Design & Features

The GS50’s casing is tasteful and slightly quirky. It looks more like a posh case for picnic equipment you’d get from a high-end retailer rather than a case for a top projector for gaming contender – but the smart white casing of the main section means that on the shelf it blends in well with home décor. The carry handle on the side makes it easy to carry around, as does a rugged feeling carry case which could be mistaken for a cool bag before closer inspection. It needs a bag, as it’s far too big to slip into a pocket. The plastic case is hardwearing, rated to withstand a fall of over two feet (carrying height), and it’s splash resistant.

The little leg at the front which enables you to tilt the unit up to 15 degrees is a smart and very fun feature that is very well integrated. The GS50 is overall extremely easy to set up – start-up is very quick while keystoning and focus are automatic on launch and can be easily updated via the remote should the projector get moved slightly. Just point it at a surface, switch it on and within seconds you can begin spending twenty minutes arguing about what to watch.

The sound is really excellent, with two 5w tweeters and one 10w woofer. At home, we kept the volume comparatively low – 10 out of 50 for the most part. This is key for an outdoor projector: you don’t want to have to lug around a set of speakers as well. The GS50 provides unbelievable volume from its fairly small case, and even with the sound blaring there’s no notable distortion.

Battery life is stated at two hours, but I managed closer to three using the low power mode and an HDMI input, so easily enough time for most films. But if you want to watch the Snyder Cut around the campfire you can further power it with a USB-C battery pack. There’s also 16GB of internal storage to download content to – a rare boast even for portable projectors. Like the vast majority of portable units, there’s no zoom so picture size entirely depends on placement.

The operating system is Android 9.0, which is becoming a default for this generation of smart projectors. It works smoothly and has a wide range of apps available. But, as ever, there are key apps missing – most notably Netflix (unless you want to do some complicated workarounds). At this point, I’m more annoyed that I have to keep writing this than I am about the practicality of needing to boot the PS5 to watch Queer Eye. I beg Netflix to license the app for more projectors, if not for the sake of their consumers but for us pampered reviewers who have to keep explaining it’s not the manufacturer’s fault these apps don’t have permission to be used on their units.

Performance

Picture quality is a sharp HD, with smooth motion even for quick sports. The colour is lush and immersive too which is particularly great when using it as a projectors for PS5 and in RPGs. We’re used to portable projectors running 720p, so true 1080p here is impressive. This might not be the best picture you get for the money but it’s truly great for a portable unit. It was only when A/B-ing against a 4K projector that I noticed any drop in picture quality and depth of colour, otherwise I was very happy with this image for casual watching and gaming.

Unusually for BenQ, there’s no dedicated gaming mode, and input lag is stated at 62ms. It’s fine for casual gaming – I got through the drinking contest rhythm games of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla without issue and my performance on FPSs was no worse than usual – but hardcore or competitive gamers would want faster, and should probably look to something like the BenQ X1300i. Darker areas were a slight strain with ambient light, but there were no complaints in a dark room.

The image stands up well to ambient light – looking great even in the afternoon sun with patio windows open. When outdoors and even on a poor surface with the sun out, the projector produced a picture that would be watchable, and, of course, after sunset, it really excels.

Overall – should you buy it?

Everything about this feels built for quality portability. Yes, there are trade-offs in being “only” Full HD, but the picture is easily good enough for casual home-usage. But don’t think of the GS50 as a good Full HD 1080p projector at a premium price. The excellent battery life and truly exceptional sound make this a great projector to take out and about. The price is slightly higher than a good HD home projector, but it’s available slightly cheaper than one of its recent portable rivals: the also excellent XGIMI Halo+, with features like carry case and internal storage which the Halo+ lacks (albeit the XGIMI is much smaller in form).

It might not end up replacing my home projector, but I wouldn’t expect a portable projector to do so. However, we did use the GS50 in place of that for most of the last month, which is a real vote of confidence for it. I definitely wish I’d had this to review while on glamping trips over the last few summers!

How we tested the BenQ GS50

We put the BenQ GS50 through it’s paces in a number of ways, but a large amount of time spent casual watching dominated – a Charmed binge and re-watching Gravity Falls in the evenings, plus All Elite Wrestling Dynamite action led the way. The battery was put to the test by streaming the last day of the season Match of the Day on a sleepy Monday morning, with sport mode helping the picture. For games, I’m working my way through Assassins Creed Valhalla’s newer content (the landscapes looked fantastic) and for a co-op replay of Borderlands 3 (with the cartoon graphics as colourful as ever).

Outdoor testing happened by projecting onto the side of my block of flats from the street while hoping no one asked what on earth I was doing. If a projector can look good in that position, it’s really quite something, and the GS50 passed that test.

With every microphone option, a good chunk of performance also comes from how you set it up both physically and with post-processing support. Unless hearing those distant footsteps is important to your gameplay, the simple answer is you don’t need a headset for streaming at all. Just be smart about your speaker placement, volume and make the most of microphone levels and filters. Be mindful of the input pattern of your microphone; cardioid microphones pick up sound from the front and reject it from the rear making them a great choice for running without a headset or headphones.

If being tuned in to your game audio is important, there are great options available without breaking the bank. The Razer BlackShark V2 offers great bang for your buck value and is our current pick for best gaming headset. The Corsair HS35 will also only set you back less than $40 and is an excellent set of headphones.

Whatever you do, please don’t consider a headset with a built-in microphone as a clever solution. While you may feel like you’re ticking two boxes at once, headset microphones are painful listening, even on higher-end models.

Verdict: Save

Honestly, you can get by without a headset completely when streaming, but if you need to then you can fly with a budget set and still be successful.

Camera

“Do I need a facecam to be successful at streaming?” is a question you’ll see littering subreddits and forums and for me, the answer is a simple yes. This is probably the area with the widest price range too with streamers using everything from the cheapest webcams to cinema-grade 4K DSLRs. Something is better than nothing here but if your stream is focusing on gameplay, there’s not much to be gained by investing too heavily.

The Logitech C920 has dominated the market for a number of years and still holds up well. With a price now hovering around $60/£60, it’s a good middle ground option and can look great in the right situations. At this price point, you’re not going to see impressive depth of field blur or rapid autofocus but that’s a luxury and not a necessity. Even the cheaper C270 will do a job and is better than no camera at all but taper expectations on video quality, particularly when streaming at night. 

Just Chatting streamers or those looking to put the focus on themselves might want to make a camera an area of importance. If that’s the case, the Razer Kiyo Pro ($199/£199) tops our list of the best webcams. For less of a webcam look, the Elgato Facecam ($170/£190) is a step up that delivers a picture closer to a conventional camera. With a prime lens, you’re locked into a fixed focus range, but this helps deliver that bokeh effect if you get your lighting right.

Verdict: Save – at first

A good-quality camera is going to make your stream shine and stand out – if you are saving initially, look to spend down the line on an upgrade.

Lighting

Regardless of how much you’ve spent on camera, your facecam performance is always going to be controlled by your lighting. You’ll be amazed how much better even an entry-level facecam starts to look when you feed it enough light and how poor high-quality cameras can look in gloomy rooms.

You don’t need to splash out on top-end options like the £299 Razer Key Light Chroma or the clever £89 Elgato Key Light Mini, or anything premium on the internet’s best ring light guides straight away either. While they offer seriously good performance with the convenience of app integration and remote control over brightness and temperature, these features are far from necessary. If you’re streaming on a budget, file these away in the wishlist for now.

As a starting point, a cheap IKEA desk lamp will help deliver improvements. If you do go the low-end route, consider creative ways to diffuse the light for a gentler look like bouncing it off a wall or even simply covering it with a piece of white paper (don’t do this unless you’re using an LED bulb though!).

Verdict: Save – initially

Any lighting or thoughtful approach to lights will benefit your streams, but it will pay to look to a proper solution down the road.

Capture card

Unfortunately, game capture is one of the few areas you’ll likely need to spend to ensure you get a good quality option and one of the best capture cards to ensure your streams shine. While you’ll find plenty of aftermarket options online that promise strong performance, in reality, these tend to be more hassle than they’re worth. 

Elgato has been the market leader in this space for some time and it’s a worthy crown. Both the plug-and-play Elgato HD60 X and PCIe 4K60 Pro aren’t cheap ($200/£189 and $250/£230 respectively), but they will capture gorgeous video with little to no latency. While not marketed as a gaming choice, the Elgato Cam Link is also a solid USB HDMI capture option but at $129/£119 you do sacrifice a little on the feature front.

Verdict: Spend

This is where you should direct all your saved money to; a stream captured in the highest quality – reliably – will only be great for your content.

Streaming accessories

It’s not absolutely essential but an Elgato Stream Deck is one of the most helpful and widely used accessories for streaming. Giving you control of everything from scene changes to lighting and sound effects, its programmable buttons can really help streamline your production. There are a couple of sizes and models to choose from but with prices ranging up to $250/£250 they’re not a cheap addition to your setup.

Thankfully Elgato does have an option for those on a budget. The Stream Deck Mobile app turns your phone into a digital Stream Deck, offering the same functionality as a real one. Don’t be fooled by its free listing in app stores though, you’ll need an active $2.99 monthly or $25 annual subscription to unlock the benefits.

Verdict: Spend – though they are not essential

Particularly when starting out, such accessories might not be essential, though be prepared to need them after a while as your streaming prowess grows.

Summary

If you’re just starting out, it’s important to remember your setup doesn’t need to be all singing and dancing from day one, and nor do you have to go with one brand and kit out an entire Razer streaming setup, for example. Particularly if budget is a consideration, you can be smart with your investment by focussing on key areas first and utilise little wins where you can to get up and running and to look to those bigger upgrades down the line.

The ‘Two Thumbs Up’ button won’t replace the existing thumbs up and thumbs down, but will instead act as a ‘love’ button rather than just a simple ‘like’. The new feature has already been rolled out and users can find the new button next to the regular thumbs on their TV, web, Android, and iOS mobile devices.

Christine Doig-Cardet, Netflix’s Director of Product Innovation, penned a blog post (opens in new tab)about the new personalization feature.

“Our current Thumbs Up and Thumbs Down buttons are a good way for you to tell us how you feel about a series or film, and in return, you get a profile that’s better personalized to your taste,” Doig-Cardet said. “However, we’ve learned over time that these feelings can go beyond a simple like or dislike. Providing an additional way to tell us when you’re really into something means a profile with recommendations that better reflect what you enjoy.”

Doig-Cardet goes on to use Bridgerton as an example, explaining that if you love the period drama you might be recommended more shows or films starring the cast, or from showrunner Shonda Rhimes.

There have definitely been times when the streaming app’s recommendations seem a bit odd or random, so hopefully this new feature allows Netflix to get to know us a little better.

Design & Features

It’s not just the picture that is large: the Aura is huge, larger than most of its competitors. A sturdy unit is needed to support it – ideally, one which is hard to move as knocking the base means readjusting for the optimal angle. Its smart black and grey casing is neutral enough to fit most living rooms without being drab.

I’m always impressed by the quick setup of XGIMI projectors, which are also much faster on everyday launch than many competitors. It would be even faster to set up out of the box if I had an Android phone to launch from, but I was still streaming to it within only a few minutes of switching it on. The 2400 lumen laser is so powerful that there’s a built-in feature to instantly switch it off if there’s any obstruction between the source and projection surface – a great safety feature but it did kick in a few times while I was nailing down the precise position of the projector to fit the screen. Once that was done, the eight-point image correction was great for making the picture square without much fuss.

The built-in Android system is easy to use and full of apps to stream direct from wifi, although some remain unavailable – most crucially Netflix. This is common across Android projectors and seems to be down to Netflix not licensing the app for use on them rather than the fault of the OS or manufacturer so I won’t count it against the Aura. Plus, the three HDMI inputs and wide range of casting options mean that there’s no shortage of ways to connect a device running Netflix. The only problem with the Android OS is that it’s slightly slow, but again this is nitpicking as it is not frustratingly slow.

Performance

Sometimes the biggest part of performance isn’t in the resolution stats or the refresh rate. Because of the ultra-short throw, there was no shadow when walking around my living room. I didn’t have to duck out of the way of my wife’s boss battles, and she didn’t have to wait for the ball to go out of play when I was watching football for fear of blocking the screen. After five years with a projector as our main media source, this change is nearly revolutionary!

The Aura says 4K on the box, but as is often the case this is not native 4K. It uses Expanded Pixel Resolution (XPR) to generate a “faux-K” image. If you have to have native 4K in an ultra-short throw then you’ll need to shell out a bit more than the Aura’s price point, but the difference between native resolution and pixel shifting is increasingly negligible in modern projectors. 

If you’re looking for the best projector for PS5 or Xbox Series X, the Aura could be for you as its picture is wonderfully sharp and has excellent depth of colour. Horizon Forbidden West’s amazing landscapes pop with vibrant shades, and the cutscenes are breathtaking. Like most ultra short throws, darker tones can slightly struggle to get their detail across, but not horrendously. It’s best for Marvel movies, but it can more than cope with DC. Being so close to the projection surface means it is less affected by ambient light than traditional projectors, but I did notice as good weather hit that very bright sunlight was affecting the edge closer to the patio windows.

There are five image modes: Movie, Office, Football, Game, and Custom, but it’s surprising that only Custom and Game offer much further customisation. They are useful to switch between: Football mode, in particular, is good for a range of sports (approved for bringing out the green of both soccer and cricket pitches) and the 60Hz motion compensation technology (MEMC) keeps the action smooth however frantic it gets. Game mode reduces the input lag to 43ms, strong for an ultra-short-throw projector, although, like almost all projectors, short of what competitive gamers would seek. For most casual gamers, however, it’s safely within tolerance.

The sound is truly excellent, and likely the best I’ve ever had from a projector. After a month of use, I’m yet to connect it to our surround sound. XGIMI projectors generally boast excellent Harman Kardon speakers, and the four 15W units present on the Aura give a sound that fills the room while keeping everything clear. The projector itself is whisper quiet, even without being covered by the sound output.

Overall – should you buy it?

The XGIMI Aura is simply a fantastic projector for anyone looking for something approaching high-end in a short-throw unit, and it’s also a projector that shows that ultra-short throw projectors can be much more living-room friendly than traditional throw projectors. I didn’t realise quite how much I was annoyed by the projection being blocked by people walking around until using this model. However, it does struggle with some of the issues that these units can give: a lack of definition in darker scenes, and you will get a slightly sharper image, and likely native 4K, in a longer throw projector at this price point. If you have to have the sharpest picture you can afford then a traditional projector would probably edge this out, but the trade-off isn’t huge, especially when gaining such convenience of the ultra-short throw which makes a huge difference to living with a projector as your main media source.

How we test the XGIMI Aura projector

I tested the XGIMI Aura mostly by using it as my main living room projector. For testing with video I was streaming football and cricket through the UK’s BT Sport app direct to the projector, with a range of apps streamed from the PS5 or a laptop, giving a good mix of fast moving sport and binge-watch-worthy TV shows. For curiosity I also tested some key fight sections of Birds of Prey on ultra high definition blu-ray – my go to for 4K images with vibrant colour and shadow.

Game testing came mostly from long sessions of Horizon Forbidden West on PS5 to put it through its paces for new-gen graphics, plus Assassins Creed Valhalla for tomb areas to check out how it copes with darker images.

Entertainment Weekly (opens in new tab) reports that negotiations between DiMaggio and Hulu/20th Century Animation have hit a “standstill.” The current plan is for a replacement voice actor to join the imminent table read, though both DiMaggio and the studio are reportedly open to a return.

DiMaggio briefly addressed (opens in new tab) the ongoing situation on Twitter. He wrote, “Thanks for the concern and the props, everyone. I really appreciate it. Don’t worry, I’ll keep you posted, but until then… CHEESE IT!” DiMaggio has since been retweeting fans who are eager for Bender Bending Rodriguez to make a return.

“Some roles can’t be recast,” said one (opens in new tab). Another wrote, “The very idea of doing Futurama without you is blasphemy and not a single fan of the show or your work would accept some imitator. I truly hope a deal is worked out so you can rejoin the cast!”

Futurama, as per Variety (opens in new tab), has been brought back for a 20-episode run. It’s set to stream on Hulu in the US, while it’s found its home in the other territories as part of Disney Plus.

This isn’t even the first time Futurama has been brought back amid cast controversy. The show was originally cancelled after a four-year run on Fox, spanning 1999-2003. It was then revived by Comedy Central – but not before protracted talks over salaries. It remains to be seen whether the so-called #Bendergate will have a similar outcome.

Black Friday Xbox headset deals: what we expect to see

With this year’s sales rush being the first proper price-cut season, some of our absolute favourites could be coming down to record lows this year. The Corsair HS75 XB Wireless is the perfect example. The lowest price it’s seen is $128 this year, which isn’t much off its $150 list price, so we think that’ll be beaten this winter. The Razer Kaira Pro has seen decent discounts as well but could be a great contender for a $150 headset dipping below the three-figure mark next month.

And while it could be a record-breaking sales season for these newer models that have come out since the Xbox Series X’s launch, remember that this means that older models that were previously only for Xbox One, are now potentially more tempting, especially if you’re looking for mega bang-to-buck value. Headsets that originally came out for the last-gen console like the wireless Razer Nari Ultimate for Xbox One and SteelSeries Arctis 9X, and wired models like the Corsair HS65 or EPOS | Sennheiser GSP 300, are going to be attractive options and could see very low prices indeed this winter.
