Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War just quietly added DualSense support on PC.

As first reported by Eurogamer (opens in new tab) earlier today on July 15, developer Treyarch looks to have just added support for the PS5‘s DualSense controller to Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. Specifically, support for the controller’s advanced adaptive triggers were just implemented, and can now be utilized for Black Ops Cold War on PC.

As Eurogamer notes however, Black Ops Cold War players first discovered this addition to the game on PC earlier today because it wasn’t mentioned in the new patch notes from Treyarch. Earlier today, Season 4: Reloaded launched for Black Ops Cold War, and although there were a brand new slate of patch notes published, there was no mention of DualSense support on PC.

If you’re unfamiliar with the specifics of the new DualSense implementation, the adaptive trigger technology works brilliantly with shooters like Black Ops Cold War, making you properly squeeze the trigger to aim and fire. It’s worth noting that this new addition for Black Ops Cold War only works if the console itself is plugged into the PC with a USB-C cable, as it won’t work wirelessly at all.

This actually follows in the wake of two other third-party games receiving DualSense support on PC. Over the past couple months, both Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and Metro Exodus quietly received updates that enabled support for the DualSense controller’s adaptive triggers . Just like Black Ops Cold War, there was never any official confirmation or announcement from the respective developers or publishers on the addition, and players were left to discover the brand new feature for themselves when they hooked up their DualSense controller to the game.

No one really knows why all three updates have snuck out quietly under the radar. It’s nonetheless a great addition for all three games, as the DualSense controller is genuinely one of the more impressive pieces of gaming technology out there right now, but it’s still a little odd.

Call of Duty Warzone has a new creative director, and he’s coming straight over from helping to lead Far Cry 6 as game director.

Ted Timmins announced his new role on his personal Twitter account, saying he officially joined the team at Warzone studio Raven Software today. Timmins announced his departure from Ubisoft in June, saying his role had come to a natural end as work on Far Cry 6 wraps up ahead of its upcoming October 7 release date. Timmins’ previous credits before joining Ubisoft include design work on Sea of Thieves at Rare and serving as lead designer on Fable: Anniversary at Lionhead.

I’m so excited to announce that today I joined the team at Raven as a Creative Director on Call of Duty: Warzone! I’m delighted to join the team, on a game I absolutely love. Normally it would be a little unusual for a Call of Duty game to bring in a new creative director more than a year after it launched, but Warzone is breaking all kinds of new ground for the franchise as an active (and massively popular) live service game. It’s tough to say where Timmins might help to steer the ship next, but is it too much to hope for a new pirate ship mode? OK, yeah, that’s probably too much to hope for.

Warzone is in the middle of a season right now, but the latest Black Ops: Cold War season 4 roadmap proves it’s still making moves, with a new mode called Payload finally arriving after first being teased more than a month ago. A new type of progression event called Blueprint Blitz gives players the chance to earn weapon blueprints from previous seasons, with Contraband Contracts coming into play after you complete two standard Contracts.

Granted, there are still rough spots to smooth over: it looks like a new glitch is letting Warzone players jump into the gulag early while invincible, and Activision is going after social media accounts that promote exploits that use machine learning to evade typical cheat countermeasures.

The Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War patch notes for Season 4 have arrived carrying new events, maps, quality of life changes, and more.

Now that Activision’s unified the two games, many of these additions line up with the Call of Duty: Warzone patch notes, which we broke down separately to keep things straightforward. Challenges for the Ground Fall launch event, for instance, are available in both games, as are the new 100-tier battle pass rewards.

In Black Ops Cold War specifically, we’ve got a whole host of new maps to master this season, with two 6v6 maps, one 12v12 map for Combined Arms, and the map Amsterdam for the 2v2 and 3v3 modes Gunfight and Face Off.

These are joined by new multiplayer modes entirely: One in the Chamber, Multi-Team: Sat-Link, and Hardcore Hardpoint. One in the Chamber is exactly what it sounds like: you spawn with three lives armed with a handgun loaded with one bullet, and each time you get a kill, you get a bullet back. The new Sat-Link mode, meanwhile, challenges 10 teams of four to find and claim Sat-Links satellite sites to gain points.

Other modes are spotlighted in the new featured playlists for Hijacked 24/7 and Cranked Hardpoint. Cranked Hardpoint is apparently an upgraded version of the 12v12 Moshpit mode, so expect even more chaos. Treyarch also teased additional modes to come, including 6v6 Rush and Capture the Flag.

Zombies fans are getting some new maps and activities of their own. Outbreak’s got a new region called the Zoo to go with a new quest called Operation Excision. The Onslaught map Collateral is a PlayStation exclusive for now, but the round-based map Mauer der Toten will be open to all players when it arrives later this season.

Treyarch reckons the weapon meta is looking pretty healthy, so ahead of “sweeping changes” designed to increase the Call of Duty Warzone TTK, the Season 4 update has only made some minor adjustments to a few assault rifle attachments to generally improve the effective range of rifles sporting suppressors. You can find more details and the full Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War patch notes on Treyarch’s website (opens in new tab)

After months of foundation laying, the metamorphosis is complete. Call of Duty: Warzone has become a Call of Duty: Black Ops battle royale with season 3, turning the clock back to Verdansk 84 from its original, present day setting in the Modern Warfare timeline. Don’t believe me? Just look at the new points-of-interest that Raven Software and Treyarch have brought to Verdansk, several of which are either subtly inspired by, or directly imitating, multiplayer maps from over ten years of Black Ops history.

Better yet, these new areas aren’t just there for fan service, but wish-fulfilment, following through on some map features that the Black Ops community have long been clamouring for. It’s part of a wider effort on Raven’s behalf to create a denser, more diverse Verdansk, one designed to streamline existing POIs, cut out any barren areas between them, and replace them with odes to Black Ops’ legacy, alongside a few completely new surprises. In short, you don’t need to be a Black Ops fan to appreciate what Verdansk 84 is offering in Warzone season 3, but it certainly helps.

The real-life Nuketown: Where Call of Duty got its most iconic map

Two new points of interest arriving to Verdansk 84 as part of Warzone season 3 are based on pre-existing maps from the Black Ops series. The first, and perhaps most notable, is Summit; a small, snowy arena that first appeared in the original Black Ops game, and quickly became a fan-favourite. Known as Gora Summit in Verdansk 84, the new POI sits behind a heavily reworked Dam on the north western corner of the map, and has been reimagined for the battle royale’s new springtime aesthetic.

“The dam was always a little difficult to get to,” explains Raven’s associate creative director, Amos Hodge. “The interior was complex, and there wasn’t a straight path up to the top. There’s now a clear walking path straight up through Dam, and there are now cable cars that go from Summit all the way down to the buildings below, which provides easier access, and more gameplay.”

Indeed, ever since Summit first debuted, players have long been infatuated by the cable cars which hung around the edges of the map, tempting those who could find a safe way across to them with the potential of a breezy camping spot. As Hodge elaborates, Warzone now goes one step further, letting fans finally ride the cable cars to and from the area, which provides a safe form of cover… for the most part: “When we playtest, this area sees some of the craziest gameplay, with players going up and down, sniping, parachuting, helicopters all over the place… I think players will be pleasantly surprised by how it plays.”

Call of Duty: Warzone

The second new point of interest that Black Ops players will immediately recognise when first touching down in Verdansk 84 is Standoff; a Black Ops 2 map known for its urban lanes and sniper perches. Augmenting the Farmland location that sits north of the Prison, Standoff has also been refreshed to fit Verdansk’s new 1980’s themed update, but Hodge stresses that Raven has retained its classic setup, which promises “great fun all the way around” the mid-sized environment. On the flip side, those who enjoy picking people off from the heights of Prison may now find it more difficult to do so, with Standoff’s multiple interiors offering more cover to those making a southward offensive.

But the Black Ops surprises don’t end there. The area which Hodge believes will be the big new hot drop is, in fact, a subtle nod to a lesser known Black Ops map. Grid Array is a giant power grid that Hodge calls a “landmark location”, immediately visible from the start of the infil stage in each match. The structure first appeared in Call of Duty Black Ops’ Grid map, towering over the entire area with its inescapably industrial presence. Players like myself often wondered how much fun could be had in scaling the grid, reigning down sniper fire from above, but Black Ops kept the building firmly out of bounds. Yet, like that of Summit’s cable cars, Raven is finally granting our wishes, letting you explore the entire array from top to bottom.

You might worry that this kind of POI provides yet another sniper perch favourable to those adept at long range; a worrying prospect when Verdansk is already littered with elevated positions that can disadvantage those who prefer fighting on the ground. While that’s true to some extent, the grid’s framed structure provides little in the way of cover for any nesting sharpshooters. In other words, it’ll only take one or two people on the ground to start firing back at them for any Array-stationed sniper to find themselves in the least enviable position of the encounter.

Acceptable in the 80’s

“I think players will be pleasantly surprised by how Summit plays.”

Amos Hodge, Raven Software

It’s worth stressing that Raven didn’t add these Black Ops-inspired points of interest into Warzone just for the sake of it. Hodge says that each new area was the result of careful consideration over not just “what Black Ops maps fans loved or longed to see, [but] what areas could use some love, or don’t play as well as we’d like.” You can see this in Summit, where players can now more easily and safely ascend the heights of the Dam via the map’s working cable cars, or Standoff, which offers more cover and… well, standoff points to players attempting to make their way over to the Prison.

For a lot of people, Call of Duty: Warzone season 3’s nods and homages to Black Ops will pass them by as quickly as the bullets that fly over their heads in the heat of battle. On the other end of the spectrum, I imagine the presence of Standoff and Summit will bring back painful memories for players who never got on with those maps in the first place. But, regardless of how you feel about Black Ops, you have to admire Raven and Treayrch’s approach to integrating the series’ history and iconography into what started out as a Modern Warfare battle royale. How POIs like the Grid Array feed into the early formations of season 3’s new meta is another question entirely, but as a Black Ops fan, I’m just excited to finally see what the view is like from the top.

It wouldn’t be a Call of Duty seasonal update day without needing to clear some space on your console for the download.

Activision is seemingly aware (opens in new tab) of how much of a pain it can be to find space on your console to download its updates for Call of Duty: Warzone and Black Ops Cold War, sharing something of a guide on how to best optimise space on PS4 consoles which only have 500GB of space.

Season 2 of Black Ops Cold War and Warzone launches today and the download is different depending on whether you have the full game or just Warzone installed, and which console you’re playing it on. PS4 users who only have Black Ops Cold War are looking at a 10.5GB update size while those who only have Warzone will be needing to download a 17GB update.

Addressing the issue of download sizes, Activision has shared some information in a blog post on what you can do if you have a 500GB PS4, which after all the updates, game modes, and extras you need, might be starting to run out of space: “Those who own a standard PlayStation 4 with a default hard drive of 500 GB may need to make room if they have the full versions of Modern Warfare/Warzone and Black Ops Cold War with all modes and packs installed” the post reads.

Activision explains that if you do have both games installed and have kept up to date with all the recent patches, you will need to delete some unused content to make space to download the Season Two patch.

To remove this unused game content, you have to launch into the games separately. For Black Ops Cold War, you can press R3 on the main menu which will bring you to the file management screen. From here, you can pick and choose the content packs to remove.

In Modern Warfare and Warzone, you can get to the file management by pressing Options in the main menu and going to the ‘General’ tab to find ‘Game Installs’. Once you’ve navigated to the game installs menu, you can once again pick and choose any content you haven’t played recently or no longer need.

Black Ops Cold War broke the top 20 best-selling games in US history (based on when US game sales tracking began) in January 2021, just a few months after its November 2020 release. It currently sits in 20th place, although the entire top 20 has yet to be released by NPD. These are pretty staggering statistics, especially considering Black Ops Cold War has only been out for a few months.

According to Piscatella, it even took the crown for best-selling game of 2020 with only two months of sales underneath its gun belt – although it must be noted that the company did not factor Animal Crossing: New Horizons digital sales into the mix, which could very likely push the Nintendo title into the top spot. It’s important to note that the NPD statistics are based on dollar sales, so it’s unclear how inflation factors into rankings.

The popularity of Black Ops Cold War could be tied to the free-to-play Call of Duty: Warzone. The two games were integrated in December 2020, with multiplayer maps and cosmetics shared between the two, so many may have picked up Black Ops Cold War to bolster their Warzone content.

We know that the new Call of Duty game 2021 will happen at some point this year, so let’s see if that will be able to pull in as impressive sales numbers as Black Ops Cold War. Considering Activision reports that Call of Duty has “the largest player community it has ever had to start a year” in 2021, I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw some record-breaking sales numbers yet again.

Even the Call of Duty: Warzone invisibility glitch can’t stop the sales.

Original story: Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War League Play launched yesterday and there’s already a list of complaints from players.

The competitive mode, which is modeled after the Black Ops 4 League Play, tasks you with playing five placement matches which will determine your Skill Division placement. Throughout the remainder of the event (one event runs from Monday to Friday, the other from Friday to Monday), you’ll earn promotions by playing 4v4 matches pulled from the same pool of 50 players who are considered on or near your skill level. There are only three playable game modes in League Play: Control, Search and Destroy, and Hardpoint.

But players who tried out Black Ops Cold War League Play last night reported back with a handful of complaints, some of which have been addressed by Treyarch’s David Vonderhaar. The main critique from players is the ranking system, with many confused as to how they could win all five placement games and end up in Competitor, the lowest possible rank that makes up 50% of players.  In a Twitter exchange with frustrated players, Vonderhaar initially suggests that “the matchmaking poll doesn’t allow us to give you a perfect game” promising players that it “is not a conspiracy. It’s software.” By the end of the thread, Vonderhaar posits that the Call of Duty: World War 2 League Play has the fan-favorite system and says he’s “not religious about any specific game system.” Whether that means the Black Ops Cold War League Play ranking system will change is unclear, but it’s certainly on Treyarch’s radar.

Based on today’s thread it sounds like WW2 has the fan-favorite system? Not BO2. I am not religious about any specific game system. Grateful for all the inputs. Could do without the name-calling. That’s demotivating to people who otherwise want to help move this forward.February 9, 2021

That may be the loudest and most commonly shared complaint from players, but it’s not the only one. Eurogamer (opens in new tab) reports a host of grievances regarding custom classes which allows players to use certain scorestreaks and perks that many hoped would be banned from League Play, which already bans LMGS, tactical rifles, shotguns, and launchers. And with league play implementing the same controversial streak system from Black Ops Cold War, which does not reset streaks when you die, that means a lot of RC-XDs in League Play. There’s even a bug that’s causing players to start a match with empty loadouts and zero guns – but Treyarch is working on a fix for that one.

Considering Black Ops Cold War League Play just launched yesterday, a handful of issues is to be expected. But many players are upset with the decision to implement Black Ops 4’s ranking system and some of the rules that have been set for this version of League Play, arguing that it’s offering a subpar competitive experience. Let’s see if Treyarch responds to these criticisms with changes to League Play.

At least League Play doesn’t have its own version of the Call of Duty: Warzone invisibility glitch

Black Ops Cold War Raid map may be a fan favorite, but it’s an architectural nightmare according to one YouTube creator. Check out the video above, and read on for more.

Black Ops Cold War Season One brought back Raid, a 6v6 multiplayer map from Call of Duty: Black Ops 2. As ReplayMode (opens in new tab) points out, Raid is set in the Hollywood Hills of California, which is in the US despite Black Ops Cold War not being set in the US at all. But that’s not the core issue at play here – it’s the nonsensical layout of this mansion.

“Honestly, I’m still trying to wrap my head around the layout,” says the video’s fictional host Lt. Gary Aswalt. “The garage is on the far east side, disconnected from the rest of the house, then there’s the bedroom, with a nice view of the pool below but uh, nothing else connected to it.” He’s not wrong, the bedroom just sort of exists separate from the rest of the house, which may be nice in terms of decreasing the foot traffic that goes past your sleeping quarter, but is certainly a pain if you’re a midnight snacker.

There’s also no connections or hallways between the kitchen, laundry, office, and bedroom – it’s all outdoor patio space, which means if it does manage to rain in LA, you’ll be getting wet during your morning commute from the bedroom to the office. “You expect someone to carry all their laundry from this building over here, all the way through the garden, what’s basically an outdoor kitchen, courtyard, and pool, just to get up to the bedroom?” ReplayMode asks. If you manage to make this laundry trek without losing a sock, there’s no play to put the laundry basket because there’s no dresser in the bedroom.

Oh, and there’s a panic room with a window inside, which seems counterintuitive. But at least there’s still the basketballs that you can shoot into the basket.

Call of Duty: Black Ops season one is finally right around the corner from launching next week.

After being delayed out of originally launching on December 10, we’re now just a few days away from the debut season in Black Ops Cold War. There’s a ton of new content to get excited about, including new maps, new weapons, and a brand new Warzone experience.

When does Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War season one go live?

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War season one goes live on Thursday, December 16. It’ll be going live at exactly the same time across PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S.

As for the specific time that Black Ops Cold War season one will be going live at, it’ll be launching at approximately 11 p.m. PT on December 15. Therefore, it’ll be available in the very early hours of December 16 for east coast US at 2 a.m. ET, and at the slightly saner time of 7 a.m. GMT for the UK and a little later in Europe.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War season one Operative

As usual with new Call of Duty seasons, there’s a brand new Operator to content with. For Black Ops Cold War’s debut season, Vikhor “Stitch” Kuzmin will be joining the fight as a new character.

If you’re trying to recall whether you’ve seen Kuzmin in Black Ops Cold War previously, you haven’t. However, the newcomer is said to have a history with none other than Russell Adler, who it’s said took Kuzmin’s eye. You can probably guess who Kuzmin’s gunning for in Black Ops Cold War and Warzone.

New Warzone Rebirth map in Black Ops Cold War season one

We already know that Black Ops Cold War is crossing over with Warzone in a big way when season one kicks off, but there’ll be a brand new Warzone map available on December 16. At launch, there’ll be a limited-time event centred around Rebirth Island, featuring up to a dozen free rewards for players to obtain.

As for Rebirth Island itself, it’s a much smaller map than what we’re used to with Verdansk. It’s so small that it actually features a similar player count to Mini Royale, and will support Trios and Quads modes at launch.

Additionally, there’ll be a new Resurgence mode launching with Rebirth Island. Not entirely unlike Plunder in the way that players can respawn every 30 seconds, this mode gives all squads a limited number of lives, and tasks everyone with being the last team standing.

Finally, there’s two brand new Gulags to content with on Rebirth Island. One Gulag will be a smaller version of the Nuketown multiplayer map, while the second is a tiny map featuring a metal detector. Both new Gulags certainly sound like a lot to deal with.

Every Black Ops Cold War season one multiplayer map

There’s 8 brand new maps slated to join Black Ops Cold War as part of season one. Right now though, we only know the names of two new maps: Raid and Pines. The former you might recall as a pretty significant location from Black Ops 2, while the latter is based in a New Jersey mall.

Black Ops Cold War season one battle pass integration with Warzone

One of the headline features of Black Ops Cold War season one is the brand new battle pass. While we don’t yet know any details on what the battle pass itself will contain, we do know that this one battle pass can be progressed through both Black Ops Cold and Call of Duty: Warzone.

If you purchase the new battle pass, you’ll be able to level it up through both Call of Duty games. Additionally, all rewards that you obtain through the battle pass will be shared across both Black Ops Cold War and Warzone, so you’ll be earning rewards for two games at once.

Gunfight returns for Black Ops Cold War season one

If you weren’t already aware: Gunfight is one of Call of Duty’s more tense modes, and it’s back in action for Black Ops Cold War season one. The returning mode pits two teams of two players against one another, and tasks teams with winning using randomized loadouts.

At launch, there’ll be four maps available for Gunfight. You’ll be fighting underground on U-Bahn, host carnage in Game Show, infiltrate Soviet HQ in KGB, and fight around a massive missile in ICBM.

New Fireteam map in Black Ops Cold War season one

As for Fireteam, the mode will be getting one new map in Black Ops Cold War season one. The new map, called Sanatorium, explores an experimental Soviet health retreat featuring water combat in a lake, as well as sprawling hills and a large dock. You’ll want to be on the lookout for documents detailing information on the secretive Project Golova.

Content for the debut multiplayer season of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War has leaked online.

Earlier today on December 2, the post below appeared on the Black Ops Cold War subreddit (opens in new tab). If you click on the images themselves to get past the spoiler warning, you can see a Starter Pack containing a new Adler skin, four new maps, and three new skins for three different multiplayer Operators.

Season 1 Leak: Starter Pass, New Maps, and new Skins from r/blackopscoldwar

Chiefly, the Black Ops Cold War subreddit is speculating on what the four maps could be. Most are agreeing that the third map we can see in the post above is Launch, a remake of a map from the original Black Ops, while the fourth map appears to be Raid.

Elsewhere, there’s no confirmation yet as to the price for the Starter Pack, containing the new Adler skin, a Calling Card, two Emblems, and a bunch of COD Points. However, commenters below the post are quick to remind folks that the Starter Pack for 2019’s Modern Warfare retailed for $4.99.

Commenters also ask if there’s anything related to the Zombies mode at all, but it doesn’t appear there is anything Zombies-related in Black Ops Cold War’s debut season. It seems like we’ll be waiting a little while longer for an update to the PvE mode.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Season One launches later this month on December 10, likely introducing all the content seen above on the Reddit post. When the new Battle Pass is introduced for the season, you’ll be able to progress it across Black Ops Cold War, Warzone, and Modern Warfare, as Activision ties together progress across all three games.

If you’re still putting countless hours into the Zombies mode of the game, head over to our Black Ops Cold War Zombies easter egg walkthrough for a full guide to the Die Maschine map.
