A Bloodborne fan has imagined what the game would look like as an animated TV show.

Shared as part of the month-long Souls series-inspired art challenge known as #Soulstober2021 (opens in new tab), Twitter user @Berardbro (opens in new tab) released the animated trailer with the caption: “What if Bloodborne was an animated series?”

The trailer features key moments from Bloodborne in the style of a late 90s/early 2000s Cartoon Network show. Although fast-paced, the trailer features many instantly-recognizable characters from Bloodborne, including Lady Maria, Micolash Host of the Nightmare, and The Hunter.

It turns out there’s a good reason for this stylistic choice as the credits of the video reveal that the 2D artist was inspired by the work of Genndy Tartakovsky, the artist who is responsible for classic Cartoon Network shows such as Samurai Jack, Dexter’s Laboratory, The Powerpuff Girls, and more.

The credits of the trailer also reveal that Berardbro also took influence from the work of Hidetaka Miyazaki, a central figure in the development (and success) of FromSoftware’s ‘Soulsborne’ games.

It appears that we aren’t the only ones who would love to see this become an actual series, as many of the replies to the tweet make reference to the clear Tartakovsky influence (opens in new tab) and ask that the likes of Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, and Netflix make this a real thing. (opens in new tab) Although we’d love to see this fan-made animated short be turned into a full-length series, fans would have to convince Sony and FromSoftware first.

After seeing this Bloodborne PS1 demake, I’m no longer holding out for a Bloodborne PC release; I want to see this thing on the original PlayStation.

According to coder Lilith Walther (opens in new tab)‘s YouTube channel, this retro-fication of FromSoftware’s horror action-RPG has been in the works for several years, and her latest update video demonstrated just how far the demake has come. It’s a near shot-for-shot recreation of the Father Gascoigne boss fight, complete with the intro cutscene, Gascoigne’s second form, and a remarkably accurate recreation of the UI.

There’s so much to love here that I don’t know where to begin. Let’s start with the fact that it actually works, and while PS1 games didn’t have Unreal Engine 4, this thing could pass for a hidden gem from the ’90s just going by the screenshots. It’s a delightfully low-res take on Bloodborne’s dismal aesthetic. Just look at the polygons on those gravestones. Look at that blood splatter! I’d believe you if you told me that was in Resident Evil 2.

The interface absolutely sings, too. They don’t make fonts like this anymore, I tell you what, and it’s amazing how well everything fits on-screen despite the limited space and resolution. That said, my favorite bit has got to be the rotating riposte prompt that appears over Gascoigne’s head when our player gets a parry off. The nostalgia from that hit me like a thunderclap and took me straight back to the design language of Neversoft’s PS1 Spider-Man game.

Gascoigne and the playable hunter also move incredibly smoothly. Gascoigne’s move set has been faithfully ported over, complete with gun and halberd combo attacks, and our Hunter swings the saw cleaver with familiar ferocity. The demake even has the regeneration mechanic that lets you regain health by dealing damage shortly after getting hit.

If you want to see more of the demake in action, check out this weapon and settings showcase (opens in new tab), or this short video highlighting the different enemies in the game (opens in new tab). Oh man, one more bit of gushing: the skyboxes! Quintessentially PS1. Just incredible stuff.

A leaker with a largely solid track record claims that a crop of prominent PlayStation exclusives are headed to PC in the near future.

In its first post in just over half a year, the CrazyLeaksOnATrain Twitter account jumped right back into the thick of things to claim that Bloodborne, an Uncharted collection (presumably Uncharted: The Nathan Drake collection, a remastered bundle of the series’ three PS3 games), Ghost of Tsushima, and God of War are headed to PC.

The account has claimed several times in the past that a Bloodborne PC version is on the way. While good hunters are still waiting on that to be officially confirmed, the account correctly predicted the Epic Games Store exclusive debut of Kingdom Hearts on PC, the Ninja Gaiden Trilogy remaster, and Nioh 2 getting a PC port (though their predicted release date was a few months off), among others.

While any of this would have been tough to believe a few years ago, the arrival of former PS4 exclusives Death Stranding and Horizon Zero Dawn on PC makes this rumored slate of games seem much closer to the realm of possibility. It would be the first time either God of War or Uncharted, both pillars of PlayStation exclusivity for more than a decade, had major releases come to an external platform.

PlayStation boss Jim Ryan confirmed last month that “a whole slate” of PlayStation games are headed to PC, starting with Days Gone some time this spring. If that slate includes the leaked lineup of games, PC players have a lot to look forward to.

Knowing how to access the Bloodborne The Old Hunters DLC expansion isn’t as obvious as you might expect because this is From Software and they never do anything obvious or easy. Back on November 24, 2015, a big update to Bloodborne introduced a pretty significant expansion to the game: The Old Hunters. As well as adding more narrative content to the game, The Old Hunters DLC also granted players access to new areas, new enemies, and the ferocious Bloodletter and Gatling Gun weapons.

As you’ve probably come to expect from Bloodborne now, though, actually accessing all this content isn’t a simple affair. The DLC itself is locked behind a progress check, and then actually making your way into the additional content is a little convoluted. Read on below to figure out exactly how to progress from the main game into the additional content. Spoilers follow.

First, you’ll have to defeat Vicar Amelia and examine the altar inside the chapel – this is part of the story. Return to the Hunter’ Dream, and you’ll find a new group of Messengers next to the Doll. Talk to them to receive the Eye of a Blood-drunk Hunter. Sounds like a lovely gift.

With the Eye in your possession, return to the Cathedral Ward. Exit to the left, toward the circle of gravestones. Look to your right to spot a dead body by a tree behind the stones. You may have already looted this corpse on your own, and been instantly killed by some invisible creature. Stand by the body and let that creature grab you again – this time, it’ll warp you to a new area.

And that’s it. Welcome to the Hunter’s Nightmare! For more help navigating this horrifying new area, check out our Bloodborne: The Old Hunters boss guide (opens in new tab) and Bloodborne: The Old Hunters weapons guide (opens in new tab).

Bloodborne Chalice Dungeon bosses are a unique challenge in a unique location. Chalice Dungeons are semi randomly generated challenges players can create and run. Pushing through the descending levels means more risk and more reward. Just surviving the basic Bloodborne enemies you can find can be tough but there are also numerous Bloodborne Chalice Dungeon bosses that can test the skill of even the most seasoned pro with an OP character. Some help is definitely not a bad thing so here’s a run down of what Chalice Dungeons you might encounter and how best to deal with them.

Undead Giant

Being the first boss, the Giant is quite a pushover. In fact, he only has two attacks at his disposal. The first is a simple swipe of his arm blades – easily avoided with a sidestep. He may also hunker down and start charging up. Give a little ground, as he’ll burst outward with an area-of-effect blast.

The Watchers

Though not as easy as the Undead Giant, the Watchers can be taken down fairly quickly if you avoid getting surrounded. Two Watchers wield cleavers, the other a rifle. Your first move should be taking out the rifle-toting one. Once he’s down, focus on one of the other Watchers, avoiding their cleaver swings with sidesteps. Take them down one by one, and you should have no problem.

Watchdog of the Old Lords

The Watchdog has three attacks: a close-up chomp, a long-range fiery leap, and a fire area-of-effect blast. For the chomp, sidestep back or to the side to avoid damage. As for the leap, the easiest way to avoid damage is to dash forward, causing the Watchdog to leap over you. If you see him charging up, retreat to avoid the fire blast. Pro tip: you can roll under his hind legs and do massive damage to his belly.

Maneater Boar

You’ve seen this guy before: his the giant pig enemy you’ve encountered in the main game. Watch out for his charges, using sidesteps to avoid damage. If you’re directly behind him, you should also step away in case he bucks. Finally, be ready to dodge at short range if he starts shaking violently. Keep these in mind, and whale on Mr. Boar whenever possible.

Beast-possessed Soul

You’ve probably encountered this guy in the main game already – he hasn’t changed. He’ll either throw fireballs at you or swipe with his giant claws. In both cases, a sidestep is all that’s necessary to avoid damage. Take him down!

Keeper of the Old Lords

The Keeper can be a little tricky – he’s pretty quick with his kitana and fire magic. Leap back to avoid his slashes, and leap to the side to avoid his fire blasts. He’ll add fire effects to his blade after taking enough damage, so be extra careful during this time because you’ll take additional damage.

Pthumerian Descendant

This old, but large foe isn’t too tough. He wields a sickle, which he’ll attack with while lunging slashing. In both cases, sidestep around him to get at his weak back. After taking enough damage, he’ll split the sickle into two. He’ll use the same basic attacks, but learn a new leaping one. When he springs up, dash under him to avoid being pounced on. This attack will also break your lock-on, so be ready to swing the camera around and find him again.

Bloodletting Beast

The Bloodletting Beast is very similar to the Cleric Beast, but a bit more annoying – finding an attack opportunity can be tricky. His attacks consist of paw swipes, fist slams, and long range lunges. In all cases, your best bet is to dodge backwards manoeuvre around him. As far as dealing damage, you can actually dodge right under him and through his legs, opening up his back to attack. Just be aware that he may also stomp at you while back there.

Abhorrent Beast

The Abhorrent Beast may be the toughest random boss you’ll face. Be on your toes, always dodging for the duration of the fight. His punches and swipes hit hard, and reach much farther than you think. Make sure he’s done with a combo before leaning in to damage him yourself. Be sure to immediately dodge away too, as there’s barely any time to even move in this (honestly, pretty cheap) fight. When he powers up halfway through the battle, be sure to sidestep his two-handed attack, as it’ll now send a damaging sound wave forward from his fists.

Brainsucker

If you’re fighting the Brainsucker at this point, you’ve encountered him before – the only difference here is more HP. Sidestep his puny punches, and take care not to get grabbed. If you’re caught, he’ll dig into you with his tentacle, causing a decent chunk of damage.

Forgotten Madman

The Madman can be tricky boss, since he’s basically an NPC Hunter. Use sidesteps to avoid his enchanted sword slashes and blunderbuss blasts, and keep an eye on his left hand. When it’s in a tentacle form, he will also use a medium range tentacle strike. He may even perform a large area of effect spell, so keep your distance if you seem him powering up.

Things heat up (quite literally) when the Madman’s Escort shows up when the Madman is past half HP. He’s another Hunter wielding the Kirkhammer and Flamesprayer. Focus on getting rid of the Madman first, then turn to his buddy. Keep sidestepping the hammer blows, and be sure to give a wide berth when he starts firing the flamethrower your way.

Pthumerian Elder

The Elder wields possibly the coolest weapon in the game, but don’t get distracted – it packs a punch. At a distance, the flaming sceptre will become a crossbow, so use sidesteps to avoid getting pierced by bolts. If it turns into a flaming scythe, be prepared to dodge to the sides as echoes of the scythe will fly toward you. If he swings it like a staff at close range, dodge around him and strike at his back. Finally, if he slams it into the ground as a mace, give some distance, because it will burst in an area of effect attack.

Loran Silverbeast

You’ve likely fought plenty of these guys, so keep the same general strategy. Use sidesteps to avoid their swipes and fire-spitting. They may also charge up an area-of-effect shock attack – give some distance to avoid damage. If they drop the torch and enter their crawling form, be ready to dodge their lunges and claw swipes.

Yharnam, Pthumerian Queen

The Queen isn’t too tough to take down, but you have to be cautious. The main rule of the fight is this: attack once or twice, then back off as you hear the baby cry. Otherwise, you’ll be caught in a binding spell, completely open to attack. When it comes to the Queen’s attacks, she’ll begin with area-of-effect and ranged blood blasts, both of which can cause rapid poison damage. Sidestep up to her, deal damage, and back off. Once she breaks her handcuffs and starts using dagger swipes and charges, be ready to dodge a little quicker.

Your strategy should change once she starts moving more. If she spawns clones (which she will do frequently), take them out first. They go down in one blow, but use all the same attacks. You also need to watch for when she starts channeling into her dagger. She may either cause a row of blood spikes to chase you or multiple burst from the ground. In either case, keep moving and keep your distance from her. Finally, watch for any large glowing ring around her, and get out quickly if you spot it – it’s a pretty big energy attack.

A recent round of rumors point to a Bloodborne remaster coming to PS5 (opens in new tab) and PC, though there’s some reason to be skeptical.

Two well-known video game Twitter tipsters, both @Nibellion (opens in new tab) and @Wario64 (opens in new tab), have recently made mention of the possibility. Both recently linked to a video by PC Gaming Inquisition (opens in new tab), a relatively unknown YouTuber who claims to have early information about the Bloodborne remaster. It sounds like the above Twitter personalities are only going off the YouTuber’s word (as opposed to having their own independently-verified sources), which is why it’s safest to take this with a grain of salt. Then again, both Nibel and Wario64 are reputable, so their endorsements do lend credence to the rumor.

Further, the rumors are backed up by popular Twitch streamer and Twitter user CaseyExplosion (opens in new tab), who wrote on Twitter that a trusted source confirmed the remaster in return for a $100 charity donation. The details shared by CaseyExplosion agree with everything PCGI said on YouTube.

On that note, the rumors allege that a fairly-straightforward Bloodborne remaster is making its way to both the PS5 and PC with faster loading times, improved textures and character models, and quality-of-life updates. Bluepoint and QLOC, who were behind the Dark Souls remaster, are reportedly developing the Bloodborne remaster, which was set to be revealed during today’s postponed (opens in new tab) PS5 Future of Gaming event. Finally, PCGI said their sources also confirmed a proper remake of Demon’s Souls, which would launch as a PS5 exclusive.

CaseyExplosion has confirmed that a release date is in place, but stopped short of revealing one. PCGI, on the other hand, only said that the Bloodborne remaster is coming “soon.” PlayStation recently (opens in new tab) confirmed that a new date for their big PS5 event would be revealed soon, so it might not be long before we hear an official announcement on Bloodborne coming to PC and PS5. Alternatively, it could all amount to nothing. As always, we’ll pass on anything we hear as soon as we hear it.

Here are the most exciting (and confirmed) upcoming games of 2020 (opens in new tab) and beyond.

During the Golden Joystick Awards 2018 (opens in new tab) today, FromSoftware’s visionary director Hidetaka Miyazaki won the Lifetime Achievement award for his outstanding contributions to the industry. Miyazaki directed such influential games as the Dark Souls series and Bloodborne, which redefined how players and developers alike approach difficulty and worldbuilding in games. As the latest winner of the Lifetime Achievement award, Miyazaki joins the ranks of esteemed video game luminaries like Hideo Kojima, Sid Meier, and the late, great Satoru Iwata.

The award was presented by two living legends in their own right: Games Workshop and Fighting Fantasy co-creators Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone. Their presence was no mere coincidence: the Fighting Fantasy choose-your-own-adventure RPG books that Jackson and Livingstone penned 37 years ago originally inspired a young Miyazaki. Livingstone called Miyazaki a “true genius of game design,” which must’ve felt great, as the pair are two of Miyazaki’s childhood heroes. “I’m such a huge fan of these two guys, I’ve almost forgotten what I was going to say,” Miyazaki chuckled.

Speaking through a translator, Miyazaki expressed his gratitude to everyone who helped make these seminal games, and everyone who enjoyed playing them (you can watch a clip of his acceptance speech above; the full award takes place at the 49:15 mark in the full Golden Joystick Awards 2018 stream archive (opens in new tab)). “It’s such a surprise and an honor to receive this prestigious Golden Joystick award – I’m quite humbled,” he said. In addition to thanking his coworkers and family, Miyazaki had a message for FromSoftware fans: “More than anything, thank you to the players – to everyone who has played, enjoyed, and appreciated my games.”

Next up from Miyazaki and his team at FromSoftware is Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice (opens in new tab), coming in March 2019, which adds grappling hook mobility to the studio’s familiar blend of brutal challenge and righteous rewards. “I plan to carry on making games for as long as I’m able, and I will do my very best to make sure that they’re games that you will enjoy,” Miyazaki pledged. “Thank you for your continued support in advance.”

Here’s the full list of all the Golden Joystick Awards 2018 winners (opens in new tab) from the show.

Ever since Bloodborne (opens in new tab) set us into unholy fits of rage with its lovecraftian baptism of fire in 2015, FromSoftware fans have been wondering, hoping, and praying for a sequel. For a while, it was believed that next year’s Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice (opens in new tab) was Bloodborne 2, but the Japanese studio’s feudal Japan set action RPG is a far cry from the dark and dreary world of Yharnam.

But there’s still hope yet. FromSoftware recently released Deracine, a mystery adventure for PlayStation VR, and fans think they’ve found subtle confirmation that a Bloodborne sequel is on the way. Partway through the game, players will come across a doll that can be picked up and studied. So far, so normal, but, upon closer inspection, it turns out this toy is performing the “Make Contact” gesture that bodes such significance in Bloodborne lore.

Then there’s the in-game description of the item, which reads “A doll of the stone girl Fiona who appears in the unfinished tale. When a person has a bad dream, Fiona appears and helps them free.” Indeed, as Bloodborne players will know, one of the game’s main NPC characters is called The Doll, while the reference to an “unfinished story” suggests the first game isn’t the end for FromSoftware’s beloved IP.

What do you make of this newly discovered Easter egg? Could famed creator Hidetaka Miyazaki be prepping to return to Yharnam for a sequel, or is this all just a classic case of FromSoft smoke and mirrors? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

While some Bloodborne (opens in new tab) fans continue to wait for news of a Bloodborne 2 (which may or may not ever happen), others are doing the hard work of reassembling content left on the original’s cutting room floor. And now, developer Lance McDonald (opens in new tab) has given us perhaps our best look at what these foes would have looked like in the towering spires of Yharnam – albeit untextured and somewhat unfinished.

McDonalds owes much of his work to a datamine from December which revealed plenty of unused beasties for the game, several of which you see in the video above. As McDonalds points out, the creatures all exist in varying degrees of incompleteness. Some have full resolution textures and attack animations, while others simply scoot around or animate jerkily as they flail at (but cannot damage) the player.

Still others seem like they were fairly far along in development before they were canned. The “Lesser Demon” and “King Skeleton” are particularly close to finished, as the former can navigate an environment quite well as it performs a variety of attacks, and the latter can not only attack and be attacked by players, but even has a unique death animation. McDonalds posits that the Lesser Demon was likely a boss or mini-boss, while the King Skeleton was likely a more standard NPC enemy. It’s suspected (but not confirmed) they were both cut for not quite fitting into the Bloodborne aesthetic – skeletons are distinctly lacking in blood after all, and demons are more of a Dark Souls thing.

In any case, it’s pretty cool that new mysteries are still being uncovered in a game quickly approaching its three-year anniversary. And if you still can’t get enough of the Hunters and their neverending quest to cleanse our world of beasts, be sure check out the Bloodborne comic coming in February (opens in new tab).

If you pay close attention in Bloodborne, you learn that a werewolf’s ultimate weakness isn’t quicksilver or wolfsbane – it’s doors. Specifically, it’s doorframes that are too big for their hulking bodies to fit through. You can stand on the other side and comfortably hack them to death without any concern for your life, like you’re fighting a bag of potatoes with a target painted on the front. It’s cheap, it doesn’t agree with the laws of physics as we understand them, and I love it so much. Not just because it makes my life easier when I’m facing down three long-toothed rabies factories, but because it lets me work smarter, not harder. In fact, that’s what I really love about cheesing just about any game: it makes me feel like I’m in-tune with the game itself, and understand it well enough to exploit mechanics I’m not supposed to know about.

Generally speaking, cheesing is seen as completing a challenge in an underhanded way that isn’t in the spirit of the game, like leading an ultra-powerful boss off a cliff or shooting from a convenient hidey-hole where no one can reach you. In many circles these techniques are poorly regarded – cheesing is often said in the same breath as glitching or exploits, which are really just technical synonyms for cheating. But I don’t see those things falling into the same category, because cheesing doesn’t alter the basic framework of the game by prodding at frayed code. Cheesing a game comes from studying its many details and eccentricities, and using what you find to confront challenges in unexpected ways.

Take, for example, horror-romance-puzzle game Catherine. In between navigating the throes of romantic entanglement, your job is to rearrange the building blocks of a tower so you can create a path to the top. One boss in the game has the ability to change the blocks ahead of you into traps like spikes and black holes. It’s an aggravating segment that you can fail with an errant twitch, unless you realize that you have the ability to undo your last block-pulling move, which also undoes the boss’s spell. You can then hop to the next level and pull out another block before he makes a move, bypassing his cheap tactic with a cheap tactic of your own.

That gets you to the top on your own terms, and it wasn’t by abusively duplicating items or manipulating some other mix-up in the code. By paying attention to how the ‘undo’ function affects the game in less obvious ways and making creative use of what you learn, you’re able to utilize a mechanic in a way you may never have thought of otherwise. It’s not the same as trying to beat a game out of contempt or superiority (opens in new tab). It’s a battle of the minds against a game you respect and love enough to learn it inside-out.

Of course, you have to be open to the idea of the game cheesing back – I had to bite my tongue when a massive, stampeding pig killed me through the floor in Bloodborne. But in the end that means you’re interacting with the game on an even deeper level, which just makes playing it more personal and fun. So next time you snipe Sekrion from above in Destiny (opens in new tab) or goad Ceaseless Discharge into a bottomless pit in Dark Souls, banish the word ‘cheating’ from your mind. It’s just you and the game, having a Gotcha moment.
