The post EAs new patent could stop its servers from dropping out so often appeared first on Game News.
]]>Although the patent, which is called “Providing video game content to an online connected game (opens in new tab)” was first filed by EA back in 2020, it was only recently approved. In short, the patent actually focuses on machine learning, but would utilize this form of technology to analyze the connection of a player in real time.
EA’s servers would use this patent’s technology to study requests sent in by players to the server, and deduce how reliable the server itself was at carrying out the requests of the player. The machine learning tech would then acquire these results, and run them through a test to reveal the probability that the server would be able to carry out the requests of the player.
This all boils down to EA being able to run tests on servers while they’re still live, so FIFA and Battlefield servers could be monitored while they’re still being used by players around the world. The tests will feed back data to EA that will reveal which servers aren’t able to fulfil requests that players have submitted, thus being able to register which servers require maintenance before problems get out of hand.
Considering the longevity of EA’s FIFA series, and its commitment to improving Battlefield 2042, this is no doubt good news for online players throughout EA’s games. A new trademark from the company recently hinted that they could actually drop the FIFA name from the ongoing sports series in the future, as “EA Sports FC” was found referenced online.

Battlefield 2042 has (sort of) done away with the traditional class system and instead uses a combination of Specialist characters, ‘Loadouts’, and the classic Battlefield gadgets, which anyone can use in Battlefield 2042. Each Specialist in Battlefield 2042 has one piece of unique Specialist equipment and one passive trait that sets them apart from the others. They are loosely categorized as either Assault, Support, Engineer, and Recon Specialists to mimic the old classes.

Loadouts are almost exactly like Call of Duty-style custom classes. Players can customize each Loadout with any primary and secondary weapon, a gadget, and a throwable grenade of some kind. By default, the Loadouts are named Assault, Medic, Engineer, and Sniper, so you can create Loadouts that fulfil the roles of the more rigid classes of previous Battlefield games. These classes are fully customizable, including the names, so you don’t have to stick to those roles either. Loadouts don’t have any weapon or gadget restrictions either, so all of them are available to any class and are not affected by the Specialist you pick either. You could play a healing Support Specialist, such as Falck, but you could create a Sniper Loadout with a Repair Tool as your gadget.

At the start of a match in Battlefield 2042, you’ll need to choose your Specialist and your Loadout. You can switch to a different Specialist and customize or switch Loadouts whenever you’re on the deployment screen after dying. Of the 10 Specialists available in Battlefield 2042 at launch, eight are playable right away, although MacKay is unlocked at Level 15 and Paik is unlocked at Level 25.

Specialist equipment: Grappling Hook
Trait: Nimble – move faster while aiming down sights and on ziplines
Battlefield 2042 players that favor mobility will definitely want to opt for Mackay as their Specialist. His equipment is a grappling hook that can be fired out and used to swing around or scale buildings. It’s quite slow to deploy, so you won’t be able to constantly fly between buildings, but it does allow you to get on top of smaller buildings around objectives very easily for a good height advantage. Mackay’s Nimble trait lets players move faster while aiming down sights and he can travel faster along ziplines, so you’ll always be a little more mobile than other Specialists.

Specialist equipment: Grenade Belt
Trait: Wingsuit – deploy a wingsuit instead of a parachute when falling
Sundance has an unusual kit combination that allows them to cause all kinds of destruction and move around each of the huge Battlefield 2042 maps quickly. Their Grenade Belt equipment allows players to throw three different types of grenades: Scatter grenades release a cluster of mini explosives, Anti-Armor grenades target enemy vehicles like a missile, and EMP grenades emit a regular pulse in a small area that distorts enemy HUD elements. Sundance players can throw only two grenades from this belt but they can be of any type, and they still get their two Loadout grenades as well! Her wingsuit is great for crossing large distances very quickly, allowing players to remain mobile, although it is quite situational given that a high position is needed for it to work.

Specialist equipment: SOB-8 Ballistic Shield
Trait: Blast Resistance – reduce explosive damage effects
For the ultimate defense in Battlefield 2042, players should choose Dozer. He comes equipped with the SOB-8 Ballistic Shield which defends the player from incoming bullets and can be used to shield others standing behind it. Dozer players can defend others and objectives with the shield ready or use it to push up aggressively and close the gap since it can be used as melee weapon too. Th shield does severely limit your movement though, lowering your overall movement and turning speeds. Dozer’s Blast Resistance trait also means he’s a little hardier when it comes to taking damage from explosions, which is useful when objectives are getting bombarded by grenades and vehicle weapons, making him a great defender Specialist overall.

Specialist equipment: SG-36 Sentry Gun
Trait: Sentry Operator – Nearby Sentry Guns are more effective
If you enjoy locking down objectives, then Boris should be your chosen Specialist. He comes equipped with the SG-36 Sentry Gun, which can be placed down to watch a certain area. Any enemies that get within range will be fired at by the sentry gun automatically, so it’s great for watching your back, or guarding an objective. The Sentry Operator trait that Boris improves a sentry gun that he is standing next to, so don’t place your sentry and abandon it. Making use of this perk means combined fire from both the player and their sentry gun can make short work of enemy squads, provided they can be spotted by the sentry gun.

Specialist equipment: Fortification System – includes Deployable Cover and Shootdown Sentry
Trait: Veteran – provides armor with additional benefits from downed enemies
Making a reappearance from Battlefield 4, Irish – another Engineer – comes equipped with some deployable cover and can gain armor from downing enemies. His specialist equipment, the Fortification System, includes the DCS Deployable Cover, which protects squadmates from incoming bullets and explosions, and the APS-36 Shootdown Sentinel, which can destroy explosive projectiles, presumably like a Call of Duty trophy system. With his Veteran trait, Irish can hold more armor plates than usual and can recover more of them too. Armor plates are a new equippable item in Battlefield 2042, and they allow players to add 20 extra health points for themselves by slotting in a plate.

Specialist equipment: S21 Syrette Pistol
Trait: Combat Surgeon – teammates you revive start with full health
The first Medic Specialist in the game, Falck is for players that want to keep their allies alive and well while on the Battlefield. Her S21 Syrette Pistol can be fired at teammates to administer some instant healing for them. It’s great to quickly use after your squad has barely survived a strafing run from an enemy helicopter or other vehicle. You can also use it on yourself if you’re the one that needs a boost, and you can use it on enemies to deal a bit of damage. It comes with 12 healing darts and you can quite easily get more when you get ammo from dead players. If a Falck player revives you, you’ll return to the battlefield at full health thanks to her Combat Surgeon trait. Remember, all players can revive dead teammates now! While it’s no longer a job for just Medics, Falck players will be more useful.

Specialist equipment: Loadout Crate
Trait: Trauma Specialist – Allies you revive gain armor
Angel’s kit is all about resupplying teammates. His special Loadout Crate allows Angel players to call in an airdrop box that allies can use to resupply their current gear, or switch Loadouts entirely to a new set of weapons. Note that you cannot change your Specialist, only your Loadout. Angel also has the option to throw out up to three ammo and armor packs for players to grab on the go. Both the crate and ammo packs operate on a relatively short cooldown, so Angel players are almost always topped up supplies and ready to dish them out to teammates. Reviving teammates with Angel’s trait means you’ll gift them a handy armor plate to give them a little extra protection as they get back in the fight.

Specialist equipment: OV-P Recon Drone
Trait: Movement Sensor – alerts you when enemies are in proximity
Casper is a great Specialist for spying on the enemy. Using his OV-P Recon Drone, you can spot enemy players and disorient them using EMP blasts from the drone. It can also mark targets for lock-on weapons too. The drone has surprising range, so you can scout ahead with it to spot some potential targets or keep it nearby to protect your general area. His Movement Sensor trait provides a warning when enemies get too close, and this even works while you’re using your drone, meaning almost no one will be able to get the drop on you. As a Recon Specialist that leans into the typical sniper role of the class, Casper also comes equipped with a Ghillie Suit, making him well-suited to hiding in foliage to spy on and snipe enemy players. Good drone use and the Movement Sensor means Casper can also be good for more mobile and stealthy playstyles that use suppressed SMGs for example.

Specialist equipment: Cyberwarfare Suite
Trait: Trojan Network – Downing a hacked enemy reveals other enemies
Rao is the ultimate disruption Specialist in Battlefield 2042 at the moment. His Cyberwarfare Suite allows him to hack enemies and their vehicles, disabling their hardware and systems. For enemy players, they’ll have their HUD disrupted, preventing them from seeing their map and ammo counter. Rao players that kill hacked enemies will then be able to see other nearby enemies thanks to the Trojan Network trait he has. Rao’s cyber suite also works on vehicles, preventing them from using countermeasures, and in-game objects, such as bollards that can be raised and lowered through hacking. Since getting quite close to hack things is essential for Rao, he’s the kind of Recon Specialist that suites a more stealthy, close-quarters playstyle, rather than a sniper role.

Specialist equipment: EMG-X Scanner
Trait: Acquisition – enemies that you damage you become spotted
Paik’s Recon kit is a simple and versatile in Battlefield 2042. With Paik’s scanner equipped, nearby enemies will have very few places to hide, making her a great Specialist for clearing out tight buildings with an SMG or Shotgun. Her Acquisition Trait causes any enemies that hit her to get spotted, so even shooting a Paik player helps them out. Players could take a more defensive marksman/sniper role thanks to this trait, as any players that shoot back and hit will be spotted, allowing the Paik player to retaliate with accurate fire.

]]>The post Battlefield 2042 smoke grenade counter uncovered appeared first on Game News.
]]>As you can see in the demonstration video below, a player reveals to the Battlefield 2042 subreddit that you can instantly cancel the effects of a smoke grenade by popping into the ‘Collections’ tab of the game’s menu. As such, the smoke from the grenade instantly dissipates, and they can get back to blasting through hordes of AI soldiers with a light machine gun.
It’s a pretty astonishing bug, and it’s incredible that the player in question managed to find out this tiny detail all on their own. As for the bug itself though, it’s incredibly strange that the Battlefield 2042 menus manage to actually cancel out an entire gameplay feature of EA DICE’s new shooter, but then again, when do bugs ever really make sense?
Battlefield 2042 launched earlier this month across PC and consoles, and the results, just like this new bug here, haven’t been pretty. Players were immediately left dissatisfied at the bugs and glitches throughout EA DICE’s shooter, and this combined with the absurd weapon bloom effects let to some seriously harsh review bombing, where Battlefield 2042 was one of Steam’s most poorly reviewed games across the platform as of last week.
Not to be deterred though, EA DICE launched a significant update for Battlefield 2042 last week, completely overhauling weapon accuracy for a more enjoyable game across the board. Battlefield 2042 might have had a pretty rough launch, but there’s much more to come from the developer yet, with another hefty update planned for early next month in December.

]]>The PlayStation Game Size Twitter account shared the file size for the Battlefield 2042 beta, saying that its base version will take up 16.861 GB. The total space requirements could fluctuate depending on whatever updates are needed to get the beta running once it goes live next week, but at least we know you probably won’t have to drop in a storage expansion just to play the beta (though if you’re in the market anyway, make sure you check out our guide to the best PS5 SSD so you get a good deal).

The late-breaking Battlefield 2042 delay meant its beta was pushed back a little bit from its original September window as well, but at least we’ve also learned that you won’t need to be a PS Plus subscriber to participate for this pre-release test. If you’re planning to play on PC instead, you should check out the Battlefield 2042 PC requirements to make sure your machine will make the grade.
Battlefield 2042 breaks EA’s flagship shooter franchise out of its reverie for early 20th century combat by dropping players into a near-future conflict set in a world wracked by climate change and economic turmoil. Players take control of Specialist characters rather than archetypal classes, bringing their unique perks and equipment into battle along with customizable weaponry. Battlefield 2042 is set to launch on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X and S on November 19.
Hopefully Battlefield 2042 turns out to be an easy pick for our list of the best FPS games.

]]>The post Battlefield 2042 technical preview gameplay footage leaks before swiftly being taken down by EA appeared first on Game News.
]]>Several videos containing footage of Battlefield 2042’s gameplay have begun popping up, however, EA is swiftly taking down any that appear online. Unfortunately, this is to be expected as this week marks the game’s first technical test which is running from August 12 – 15, 2021.
The videos are supposedly being uploaded to Streamable, according to Eurogamer (opens in new tab), however aren’t lasting long due to being taken down so quickly. If you’re speedy enough to see one of the gameplay clips, they apparently contain a first look at vehicles in the game, as well as its UI. They apparently also look a little buggy, according to VG247 (opens in new tab) however this is to be expected from a technical test.
The Battlefield 2042 technical test can only be attended via an exclusive invite from the game’s developer DICE. These invites went out last month and required an EA Playtesting account to sign up with. The invites supposedly contained an NDA which it appears some players didn’t adhere to considering the leaks now emerging.
If you’re disappointed about not getting the chance to take part in this technical test, don’t worry. EA has previously stated that it plans to host more of them before the release of Battlefield 2042, including the Battlefield 2042 beta, which is due to take place around September time.
Battlefield 2042 is set to release on 22 October 2021 and will be playable on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

]]>The post Battlefield 2042 Exodus short film reveals a returning character from Battlefield 4 appeared first on Game News.
]]>The 9-minute CGI short centers on the former U.S. Marine and how he unwittingly finds himself at the center of a rapidly escalating conflict between the United States and Russia. The US and Russia coming to blows is nothing new for the Battlefield series, but here the unknown element is Oz, a mysterious figure who is attempting to unify “No-Pat” refugees from the many failed states of this grim near-future setting.
On top of bringing Irish back into the story – and confirming that 2042 will follow the same timeline that includes Battlefield 4 and its War of 2020 – EA has confirmed that Irish will serve as the fifth Battlefield 2042 Specialist character. Like all 10 Specialists who will be available at launch (including the lucky one who gets the wingsuit), Irish will come with his own unique gadget and trait, while players will be able to customize his approach with their preferred weapons, grenades, and secondary gadgets. Pre-ordering Battlefield 2042 will unlock a special Battle Hardened legendary skin for Irish.
It sounds like more Specialist stories in the vein of Exodus are coming to fill out the world of Battlefield 2042 in the future, but until then you can look forward to the Battlefield 2042 beta kicking off in September.
Before the beta, select players will have the chance to play the Battlefield 2042 technical test – and it looks like EA and DICE are already preparing for it to combat cheaters.

]]>The post Battlefield 2042 cross-play separates players by console generation appeared first on Game News.
]]>Today on July 14, EA published a lengthy blog post (opens in new tab) revealing a slate of new details about Battlefield 2042. One particular area of note in the blog was the confirmation of cross-play, not only for the final launch of Battlefield 2042, but also for the forthcoming technical test, which is letting players get in on the action slightly early.
In terms of the final product though, Battlefield 2042 will support cross-play when it launches later this year in October. However, this is limited somewhat between console generations, so while PC, PS5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S will all be able to play together, PS4 and Xbox One will be confined to their own cross-play pool.
Additionally, Battlefield 2042 will support full cross-progression across all systems. So if you start out your career on PS4, and then decide to switch over to the Xbox Series X, you can pick up entirely where you left off, with all your online progress carrying over in its entirety to your new platform of choice.
Battlefield 2042 promises a lot for the series’ return later this year. If you’re unfamiliar with the information previously revealed about EA’s shooter, it’s going to drop the single-player campaign entirely in favor of all-out multiplayer warfare, where teams of up to 128 players can face off on the digital battlefield.
Speaking of, Battlefield 2042 is set in the near future, on an Earth ravaged by climate change. While you’re exploring the massive open maps of the new shooter, you’re going to encounter natural disasters like sandstorms and tornados, which are sure to throw even the best-laid plans entirely out of whack.
There’s not long now to wait until Battlefield 2042 launches on October 22, 2021. It’ll be available from day one on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S, and the news of cross-play and cross-progression is no doubt welcome news for fans everywhere. The Battlefield 2042 reveal last month was so popular that Battlefield 4’s servers struggled to keep up with the new influx of excited players.

]]>The post Battlefield 2042 will backfill its biggest modes with up to 64 bots at a time appeared first on Game News.
]]>EA confirmed that it will use bots to supplement player counts in its 128-player Conquest and Breakthrough modes when it revealed Battlefield 2042 earlier this month. The big question with bots is always how much of any given match you can expect them to compose, and EA has confirmed to The Verge (opens in new tab) that up to 64 bots will be able to play in those two modes at any given time, which translates to half of the potential player count. EA currently doesn’t have any plans to let players disable bot backfill.
Battlefield 2042 will prioritize placing players in games with other humans rather than bots when matchmaking conditions allow, and bots won’t be used at all for modes with smaller maximum player counts. EA has said it was particularly important to ensure players can get the full Battlefield experience at any time in 2042, since it doesn’t include a standard single-player campaign to fall back on when there aren’t as many players around.
With bots in mind, for those jumping into Battlefield 2042 on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S, servers will allow for 128 players. For those on PS4 and Xbox One, 64 players are allowed on a server. The game is set to release on October 22 later this year.
It’s also said that EA DICE is working on another, as yet unannounced mode in its LA studio. This will be unveiled at EA Play Live 2021 on July 22. Right now, we know that the game will have the squad-focused gameplay called Hazard Zone that is to be revealed some more at some point, while Conquest and Breakthrough will be remaining. This time around, however, due to Conquest’s large-scale maps, the maps have small-scale zones that seem to promise some high-intensity action.
Battlefield 2042’s multiplayer-focused experience has a number of features for us to get looking into, and no, Battle Royale is not planned, and it may not have skill-based matchmaking either. But it will have dangerous weather, penguins, and a new specialist system replacing the usual Squads system.

]]>The post Heres all the Battlefield 2042 maps included at launch, and what to expect from each appeared first on Game News.
]]>During a presentation ahead of the Battlefield 2042 reveal trailer, which debuted today, design director Daniel Berlin guided us through a deep dive into the Battlefield 2042 maps, which can host up to 128 players on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S, and of which there will be seven available when the game releases this October 22, 2021. We’ve outlined everything you need to know about each one below, giving you a taste of what to expect, and why they suggest that this Battlefield could be the most significant entry in the series to date.

With a surface area of 5.9 square kilometers, Breakaway is the biggest Battlefield map in the franchise’s history, epitomising DICE’s commitment to bringing back the large-scale, sandbox warfare that fans know and love from the series’ past. Breakaway is set in Antarctica, and thus offers plenty of topographical diversity to match its geographical scale, as players fight over mountain ranges, mining facilities, and frozen tundras.
“One of my personal favourite areas on this map is the Outlook,” says Berlin. “It’s the perfect wingsuit launch position. It brings me back to that moment on Damavand Peak from Battlefield 3; you jump off a massive mountain and dive towards the industrial buildings below. Quite simply in terms of gameplay opportunities and pure landmass, this is the biggest and most sandbox-enabling battlefield that we have ever built.”

Kaleidoscope is the smallest map in Battlefield 2042, but that doesn’t mean it won’t offer the cinematic scope and scale DICE is known for in the competitive multiplayer space. An urban cityscape in South Korea, Kaleidoscope is bright and beautiful, with an emphasis on vertical warfare. Berlin explains that it is in this usually peaceful city where “forces clash to control a quantum powered disinformation hub after an attack threatens the global network”.
“This hub features multiple floors, and outside you’ll find canals where amphibious vehicles can manoeuvre,” Berlin continues. “At the edge of the map, you’ll find multiple skyscrapers, including a TV station, all of which you can enter. You can also use zip lines to go from rooftop to rooftop as you fight to gain control over multiple skyscrapers.”

You will have likely spotted a scene from Manifest in the Battlefield 2042 reveal trailer, where a team of soldiers are ambushed by the enemy amidst a claustrophobic squalor of shipping containers. According to Berlin, these containers will play a big part of the Singapore-set map, forcing players into the kind of up-close-and-personal combat that brings to mind Battlefield 3’s Close Quarters expansion, since “the containers themselves act as funnels for the players”.
“The fighting here can get really intense,” he adds, “particularly when you’re playing with 128 players. There are massive automated cranes, which will actually pick up and move the containers as you play.” We’re already worried about the kind of tense cat-and-mouse encounters that these roaming containers might play host to, then, but it sounds like shotgun fans will be more than comfortable navigating Manifest’s industrial labyrinth, hip-firing fingers at the ready.

To immediately address the question that’s on everyone’s mind; no, you cannot ride the rocket in Orbital and take the fight to space… at least as far as we know, anyway. Instead, this conflict in French Guiana simply takes place around the launch site of said rocket, rather than its destination, but – as part of Battlefield 2042’s new and improved Levolution system – you can have a hand in determining whether the take-off goes ahead without a hitch.
“Orbital is a medium sized map by our new 2042 standards,” explains Berlin. “It features a lot of action around the rocket launch sector and its surrounding structures. Here you’ll find both the launch pad containing the rocket itself that you saw on the reveal trailer. And yes, the rocket can take off, and no, it doesn’t always go as planned!”

Set in Alang, India, Discarded is the kind of water-heavy map that has appeared in almost every Battlefield game to date. These maps tend to be hit or miss, usually dependent on the balance and viability of the game’s watercraft, but Battlefield 2042 hopes to make Discarded a fan favourite with what Berlin calls one of the game’s many Clusters, “areas on the map where we focus objectives into a concentrated space.”
“In the middle of Discarded, you will find the Colossus,” he explains of Discarded’s own distinguishing Cluster. “It’s a massive ship hiding a stealth submarine within its stomach, and it’s a great area for close quarters combat.” No word yet on whether that submarine is drivable, but we can imagine a lot of blood being spilt within its metallic corridors either way.

Renewal is a map of two halves. “The first thing you’ll notice when entering is the massive wall that goes across the entire map,” says Berlin, explaining DICE’s intention to “actively split the play space into two very distinct areas.”
Set in the eastern desert of Egypt, players will be fighting over groundbreaking agricultural tech that has turned half of Renewal’s battlefield into futurist farmland, leaving the remaining half a dusty landscape of dilapidated buildings and towering canyons. While it’s hard to predict how any of Battlefield 2042’s meta will establish itself at this point, we can imagine Renewal being fertile hunting grounds for the sharpshooter, with plenty of open terrain to catch out vulnerable players moving between points of interest.

Doha, Qatar is the setting for one of Battlefield 2042’s larger maps, where – according to Berlin – “rolling sand dunes allow for high speed vehicle-to-vehicle combat across vast open spaces.” Hourglass also plays host to another dynamic weather event guaranteed to shake up combat across its mix of rural and urban sprawls. During matches, the map can become overwhelmed by rolling sandstorms, greatly obscuring your sightlines while also providing new opportunities for flanking enemy holding points.
“Hourglass features the neon city to the east, and its cluster of skyscrapers will light up as a massive sandstorm passes through to level,” says Berlin, explaining how the map’s various points of interest are affected by the weather. “On the other end of the map you’ll find the stadium, which has been overrun by sand, and right at the centre are these massive arches overlooking a huge highway intersection where a convoy has run to a stop, and the vehicles have been abandoned.”
