]]>Avatar: The Last Airbender creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko have teased the sheer scope of the newly formed Avatar Studios on the Braving the Elements podcast (opens in new tab) (H/T ComicBook.com (opens in new tab)).
Konietzko told the hosts that the pair currently have a “very ambitious, multi-tiered” plan that will explore the “rich, largely untapped history and future in the Avatar world.”
The plans for the Avatar universe are so grand that DiMartino joked that there could be decades of stories ahead of us.
“We have all the ideas and ideally we’re going to get to, over the years, explore all of them and get to make them, but it’ll take some time. If we make all this stuff, you guys will just be podcasting for about the next 20 years or so,” DiMartino said.
Avatar: The Last Airbender and its sequel series The Legend of Korra were hugely popular ventures on Nickelodeon and launched a multi-million dollar empire, though each mainline series only scratched the surface of a world dense with lore and untold histories. Now, there is serious backing for the creators to achieve their vision.
But it’s been a long road to get to this point. The original series launched in 2005, while a live-action 2010 movie directed by M. Night Shyamalan stumbled critically. Netflix even hired both DiMartino and Konietzko to develop a live-action adaptation of The Last Airbender, but the pair left the project in August 2020 and returned to Nickelodeon for the formation of Avatar Studios.
In March, ViacomCBS announced in a statement (opens in new tab) that streaming service Paramount+ would be home to “a wide-range of Avatar-inspired content, ranging from spinoffs and theatricals to short form.”
Things, it seems, are looking promising – and the franchise could even escalate into an MCU-style universe filled with spinoffs, shorts, and completely new series that should set the world on fire once more. There’s never been a better time to be an Avatar fan.

]]>In a rather unusual move, Nickelodeon announced the series on Avatar’s official Youtube channel (opens in new tab) in the community tab. It’ll be part of a 3-day event celebrating Earth Day and running from Thursday, April 22 to Saturday, April 24. In addition to “a new, original series” debuting on the last day of the event, Avatar’s Earth Day celebrations will include “earth-shattering original videos” and a new live stream all three days.
Shortly after Nickelodeon launched a brand new studio dedicated to making new Avatar: The Last Airbender movies and shows, studio president Brian Robbins told Deadline (opens in new tab) that “multiple TV series” are in the works as well as a theatrical film, animation, and “probably multiple films.” Despite this, there are still a lot of questions about the new series debuting on YouTube next weekend.
Responding to a slew of comments on the YouTube announcement, Nickelodeon clarified that the new Avatar: The Last Airbender project is a “fan-led original series” and revealed that more details are coming on Monday, April 19. Another comment from the channel confirms that the series is premiering live on April 24 and will be available permanently on the Avatar YouTube channel afterward.
Just last month, Robbins said Nickelodeon wasn’t ready to reveal the first of many Avatar: The Last Airbender projects “because we’re in early stages of creative development.” That’s just one of the reasons to suspect the forthcoming YouTube series isn’t the full-blown sequel to The Legend of Korra a lot of fans are expecting, though that could be coming soon as well.
Here are all of the upcoming movies we can’t wait to see in 2021.

]]>That added attention has led creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino to put to bed any speculation that a season 4 was ever in the works, though teased that there’s always space for “future stories” in the universe.
No spoilers here but, despite being only three ‘Books’ long, Avatar: The Last Airbender was a self-contained story that certainly had scope to go beyond that, particularly with members of The Fire Nation. While some threads are picked up much later in the timeline in Legend of Korra, Konietzko and DiMartino told Polygon (opens in new tab) that season 4/Book 4 was never on their minds at the time.
“There was never going to be a season 4, not from us and not from Nickelodeon,” Konietzko said. “Mike and I planned [The Last Airbender] to be a three-season arc as far back as our initial pitch in 2002, and in 2008 we finished the story we set out to tell.” DiMartino added, “We finished the show exactly as we had intended.”
But DiMartino offers hope for those who want new stories in The Last Airbender’s world, especially given the popularity of the franchise’s comics and books. “There are many seeds we planted through both series and in the graphic novels that could be expanded on and explored,” he hinted. “The Avatar universe is a big place and has a long history so there’s a lot of potential for new stories.”
A new live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series is in the works, though the creators departed the project earlier this year. The closest we’ll get to seeing something new from Aang and the gang is this unaired pilot (opens in new tab). For now, the direction of the airbenders lay in Netflix’s hands, but who knows what the future might hold?
