“I want you to break into a place and steal something,” says Michael Douglas as he hires Paul Rudd’s ex-con to become a new superhero.

It’s all very tongue-in-cheek, hinting this will be one of the funniest films Marvel has released so far. But sandwiched between Avengers: Age Of Ultron and Captain America: Civil War, there’s a risk Ant-Man could feel like the forgotten Marvel film sneaking in at the end of Phase 2, which is why Hank Pym’s line “If you give godlike powers to everyone, it’s gonna be chaos” is so interesting. Could the events of Ant-Man further fuel the flames that lead to the Superhero Registration Act in Civil War? Regardless, sounds like Hank Pym would be on Tony Stark’s side.

Also, there’s a closing moment that we’re still in stitches over.

Kevin Feige has been discussing the departure of Edgar Wright from the Ant-Man director’s chair, and what made him think Peyton Reed would be a suitable successor.

“Peyton is someone that I’ve been a fan of for a long time,” says Feige. “He was attached to Fantastic Four more than 10 years ago. He had awesome ideas and an awesome vision for the movie, and for various reasons he ended up leaving that movie.”

“He’s come in to meet on a lot of our movies over the years, in particular Guardians ,” he continues. “We met with a handful of people [ for Ant-Man ], but Peyton was always one that I thought would be great.”

He looked at everything, he talked with us, and he said ‘Number one, I agree with the direction you’re going in. And number two, I can add to it.’ And he has – the movie is in as good a shape as it’s ever been right now.”

Not that Marvel has thrown the baby out with the bathwater when it comes to building on the work already completed by Edgar Wright…

“It’s still very much in the spirit of what Edgar’s original pitch was and the entire template of the movie is what Edgar set out and originally came and pitched us maybe eight years ago now,” says Feige. “But it’s on its way to being the absolute best version of what that movie could have been.”

Co-starring Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas and Evangeline Lilly, Ant-Man will open in the UK on 17 July 2015.

Marvel has taken advantage of the Warner Bros’ delayed Batman Vs Superman (opens in new tab) movie and moved up the release of Ant-Man (opens in new tab) to 17 July 2015.

Edgar Wright’s comic-book adaptation of Ant-Man , starring Paul Rudd as the title character, with Michael Douglas recently announced in a supporting role as original Ant-Man Hank Pym, was supposed to be released on 31 July 2015.

But with Batman Vs Superman getting pushed back to 2016, that left a slot open earlier in the year and Marvel has claimed it by bringing the release of the film forward by two weeks.

Ant-Man will now be released in cinemas in direct competition with Joe Wright’s liva action Peter Pan film (for which it was recently announced that Tron: Legacy star Garrett Hedlund would be playing Captain Hook).

Meanwhile, the current release date of Batman Vs Superman – 6 May 2016 – means that it’s set to go head to head with an as-yet-unrevealed Marvel Phase three film (possibly Doctor Strange ). Although, it is expected that Marvel may now move this to another slot in the year…
