Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 is all set to air in 2023. Exciting, right? The breakout anime hit of 2020/21 is all set to enter its new arc and, hot off the heels of the wildly successful Jujutsu Kaisen 0 movie, there are more eyes than ever on the adventures of Yuji and friends.

Need a primer before then? Below, we run the rule over the next installment to tide you over until next year. We’ve also taken a look at the source material to speculate about what might come next. And that’s just the start – for all that and more, read on to find out everything we know so far about Jujutsu Kaisen season 2. For more from the medium, you can even check out our curated list of the 15 best anime series you should be watching right now.

Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 will air in 2023

Jujutsu Kaisen

As confirmed during an event in Japan (H/T Crunchyroll (opens in new tab)), Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 will release in 2023. It could debut during one of anime’s three major release windows: Winter 2023 (starting January 2023), Spring 2023 (starting April 2023), or Fall 2023 (starting October 2023).

If we had to put money on it, we’d say a Fall 2023 release is most likely. Not only did the original season debut in the Fall window, but animation studio MAPPA has also spent time working on Jujutsu Kaisen 0, Attack on Titan, and the upcoming Chainsaw Man. That’s a busy schedule for any studio – and October 2023 onwards would give them enough time to deliver a second season that matches their absurdly high standards.

Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 story: what chapters could it adapt?

Jujutsu Kaisen

Jujutsu Kaisen’s first season ended with the conclusion of the Death Painting Arc, which ran from chapters 55-64 in the manga. If the anime continues to adapt the manga in release order, then next up is the Gojo’s Past Arc, which covers chapters 65-79 in the manga.

That revolves around – you guessed it – Gojo’s past, specifically a mission involving Gojo and Geto escorting a Star Plasma Vessel to Tengen.

If that’s the case, the second season might be a patchwork of flashbacks to Gojo’s past, as well as setting up a major next arc: the Shibuya Incident (chapters 79-136). We’re not heading into spoiler territory here, don’t worry, but the Shibuya Incident Arc all revolves around a plan to seal away Goto, spearheaded by Gojo and his new cursed alliance.

That has more than enough material to last for a 25-episode second season and seems the most likely scenario. The first season’s ending may also indicate that’s the case.

Having defeated the Cursed Wombs Eso and Kechizu, Yuji and Nobara join back up with Megumi. However, Sukuna – using a mouth in Yuji’s hand, because anime – eats the finger and moves him one step closer to regaining his power.

Expect the new season to do with that encroaching evil, as well as that of the third Cursed Womb triplet, Choso, allying himself with series villains Geto and Mahito.

There’s also the small matter of a mole in Jujutsu High, with teacher Utahime very much on the hunt for the duplicitous sorcerer. That will also form a large part of the next season.

In a final season 2 setup, Yuji, Megumi, Nobara (as well as Maki and Panda) are recommended for a promotion to Grade 1 Sorcerers – and Gojo invites them to take part in a new mission…

Do I need to watch the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 movie before season 2?

Jujutsu Kaisen

We’d certainly recommend it, but – due to the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 movie being a prequel to the main series – it’s not essential.

The movie centers on swordsman Yuta Okkotsu, who will – mild spoilers – play a more prominent role in the Jujutsu Kaisen anime as it wears on. He’s also one of the most popular characters from the manga series, so you should really go and see what all the fuss is about.

There’s also a post-credits scene which sets up future events in the anime. It revolves around Yuta heading back to Japan and into the fold of the main series, though it’s not yet known if he’ll turn up in Jujutsu Kaisen season 2.

In completionist terms, it’s also worth seeking out – it fleshes out the world and the curse-heavy concept of the universe, all while making for a compelling story in its own right. It can likely be skipped if you’re pressed for time, but we really suggest you seek it out.

Where can I watch Jujutsu Kaisen before season 2?

Jujutsu Kaisen

If you need to catch up on Jujutsu Kaisen before season 2 then all 24 episodes of the first season are currently available to watch on Crunchyroll. Expect to be able to stream Jujutsu Kaisen season 2, Demon Slayer season 3, and other hit anime exclusively on the streaming service too – all thanks to the recent merger with Funimation.

Netflix is bringing its anime A-game with the first full trailer for Bubble, a boy-meets-girl movie from the team behind Attack on Titan.

Bubble features a boy named Hibiki (voiced by The Way of the Househusband’s Jun Shishon) trapped in a Tokyo where gravity has broken thanks to – you guessed it – bubbles. Never change, anime.

After a parkour adventure goes wrong, Hibiki hurtles towards a “gravity-bending sea”, only to have his life saved by the mysterious girl Uta. From there, they share an odd connection: a sound that only they can hear and a “revelation that will change the world.”

The rest of the trailer is nice and cryptic, only offering up a sizzle reel of beautiful, floating landscapes, sunken cities, and physics-bending action sequences that would make Gravity Rush blush. On top of that, is already giving us big Weathering With You and Your Name vibes, which is no bad thing.

The cherry on top, though, is that WIT Studio and director Tetsuro Araki are involved. The former is best known for kickstarting the Attack on Titan phenomenon with its incredible animation during the first three seasons of Attack on Titan; Araki worked on the hit show, and also directed Death Note. Not a bad CV.

Bubble is set to stream worldwide on Netflix from April 28. It’s only one small part of Netflix’s incredible 2022 lineup, which includes Knives Out 2, Enola Holmes 2, and The Adam Project – a Ryan Reynolds time travel movie described as Star Wars meets Back to the Future.

Five new DC animated movies are on the way next year, among them Catwoman: Hunted – which now has a trailer.

The clip debuted at DC FanDome, and shows off Selina Kyle up to her usual antics: trying to steal a valuable jewel, facing down foes, and just generally getting into trouble. Plus, it looks like a team-up with Batwoman is in the cards.

Elizabeth Gillies voices the titular thief, while Stephanie Beatriz is Batwoman. Also in the voice cast is Jonathan Banks as Black Mask, Lauren Cohan as Julia Pennyworth, Jonathan Frakes as King Faraday, and Steve Blum as Solomon Grundy. Greg Weisman penned the script, and Shinsuke Terasawa directs. (H/T The Hollywood Reporter (opens in new tab))

Also on the animated release slate is Teen Titans Go! & DC Super Hero Girls: Mayhem in the Multiverse, Green Lantern: Beware My Power, Battle of the Super Sons, and a deluxe re-release of Batman: The Long Halloween, along with animated short Constantine: House of Mystery. A Milestone animated film is also in the works.

This isn’t the only version of Catwoman we’ll be seeing in 2022, of course, with Zoë Kravitz playing the character in the upcoming The Batman, opposite Robert Pattinson’s version of the Caped Crusader.

DC FanDome is packed with announcements, with a first look at footage from Black Adam unveiled, along with a teaser for The Flash, a behind-the-scenes look at Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, and a teaser for Peacemaker.

Catwoman: Hunted will arrive on February 8, 2022. In the meantime, check out how to watch DC movies in order to get up to speed on the DCEU – and if you’re not already streaming it, check out our handy guide on how to watch DC FanDome.

To understand the appeal of Star Wars Visions, the new anthology series on Disney Plus, it’s worth revisiting Darth Vader’s iconic hallway scene in Rogue One.

There, the idea was simple: present a familiar icon and approach them from a different perspective. In that case, Vader’s efficient, merciless scything down of the rebellion caused us to re-examine the villain and see the Sith in a new, more powerful light. It was such a straightforward, yet revelatory act – one that teased the full potential of the Star Wars canvas that had, up until that point, only been painted on by a few creators.

It’s that sort of flourishing creativity which courses through Visions. With nine animated shorts developed by seven Japanese studios, Star Wars does anime for the first time. Better still, it hints at a future that fully opens up the franchise to a whole new generation of storytellers from all corners of the globe.

The nine stories approach their take on Star Wars from several different angles; each one presents original characters and uses the franchise’s thematic elements as a launching pad to tell stories in their own inimitable fashion. There is a family dynamic gone awry among the Sith in “The Twins,” an Astro Boy-style adventure in “TO-B1,” political struggle with shades of Studio Ghibli in “Lop and Ocho,” and so much more.

However, the longest of the nine shorts that comprise Visions is just 22 minutes in length, making for a scattershot approach to these stories that needs a hook. Thankfully, it gets one. Things kick off with undeniably the strongest effort, “The Duel”, a Kurosawa-inspired take on the oldest of tropes: the Ronin (Brian Tee) wanderer blows into town and aims to defeat evil – or die trying.

Star Wars Visions anime

In this short, it’s a tyrannical Sith, not a samurai, that the swordsman must chase out of town. The Ronin and the Sith (Lucy Liu) eventually end up duking it out in what ranks as one of the series’ finest lightsaber battles. The swordplay, intricate footwork, and crushing swings all leap off the screen in ways that simply can’t be replicated in live-action, even with world-class CGI and Disney’s bottomless pit of money. It might be expected given each studios’ background, but the breathless action in each short is one of Visions’ main strengths and is an exceptionally strong throughline.

“The Duel” is also, quite literally, a work of art. Its black-and-white style is achingly beautiful in motion, calling to mind legends etched on marble or faded, yellowed drawings blotted on parchment and placed in an exhibit. Star Wars has always been about mythmaking, and Visions takes it to a new level. The Jedi and Sith do exist in this world, not above it, but it finally allows the audience to understand why the figures are so revered (and feared). When contrasting the live-action trilogies with the rough-and-ready planets and populaces that litter these shorts, it suddenly makes Star Wars feel like a far more lived-in universe.

A new hope

Star Wars Visions

For too long, Star Wars has been a series weighed down with the baggage of the Skywalker Saga. Visions creates new tales, ones that yearn to be explored further down the line. They work as stories on their own terms, but each is strengthened by the fact they’re divorced from the wider Star Wars mythos.

There’s a surprising amount of leeway, too. Its status as canon is unknown (and unlikely), but Visions introduces new locations, new lightsabers, new Force powers, and even goes deeper into exploring faith and religion in a galaxy far, far away. At times, it feels like The Clone Wars with the handbrake off. That high benchmark of quality can only be accomplished by two things: strong direction and a cavalier attitude. Barring one or two infrequent missteps, each studio has avoided following the same beaten path that Star Wars has walked many times before.

But not all is one with the Force. It becomes obvious around halfway through that the studios weren’t in dialogue with each other. The end result is a handful of chapters that cover the same ground or, worse, bleed into one another without anything wholly original to make them stand out. It does make some of the more ‘out there’ entries, such as the joyfully anarchic “Tatooine Rhapsody” complete with original songs, all the more unique, however. But Star Wars can be so much more than a reworked samurai parable.

Star Wars Visions anime

Some of the voice acting is also listless. While it’s always welcome to see Temuera Morrison make a return once more as Boba Fett, some of the more A-list cast members (the likes of Simu Liu, David Harbour, Joseph Gordon-Levitt all lend their voices, though their performances vary) deliver lines that struggle to keep up with the mouth flaps designed for Japanese audio. The end product is something simultaneously rushed and low-energy. Still, we do get Alison Brie as a Sith Lord – and Japanese audio will be available at launch for that authentic touch – so it’s a net positive.

Which brings us to another p-word: potential. Star Wars Visions cannot be the first and last word in this brave new world. While there are some stumbles – some shorts fit snugly into 15 minutes while others still feel incomplete despite a longer runtime – this should be the first taste of a buffet of brilliant adventures from any creative who wants to beaver away in their own little corner of the galaxy.

Star Wars is so many things to so many people. While the likes of The Mandalorian have broadened the horizons of a franchise that was stuck in its ways for so long, Visions finally opens the floodgates. Star Wars isn’t just Luke Skywalker, Obi-Wan, and Darth Vader. Visions proves it can be anything you want it to be and, on the basis of these shorts, allowing others to play in the sandbox is only going to work out well for all involved.

The entire first season of Star Wars: Visions is available on Disney Plus from September 22. For more, check out the best shows on Disney Plus now streaming.

Netflix has released the first few images from Castlevania season 4, giving a preview of what’s to come in the final season of the anime series.

“Wallachia collapses into chaos as factions clash: some attempting to take control, others attempting to bring Dracula back from the dead,” reads the official synopsis for Castlevania’s fourth season. “Nobody is who they seem, and nobody can be trusted. These are the end times.”

The end times, inevitably, involve Carmilla. The head of the Council of Sisters features in the most striking image of the eight released by Netflix (which you can see below). In it, she holds a blood-red dagger downwards, perhaps towards the throat of one of the series’ protagonists.

Speaking of, Alucard and Trevor are similarly primed and ready for battle. The former wields a shield in one image, while the last remaining descendant of the Belmont clan looks as lethal as ever in another.

Castlevania has proved to be one of the most popular video game adaptations in recent years, both with fans and non-fans alike. The animated series has relished in being able to push the envelope more thanks to its bloodthirsty duels and sex scenes.

However, that’s all coming to an end. Castlevania season 4 will be its last. It starts streaming on Netflix from May 13, with a spinoff forthcoming. No word yet on whether the entire series gets re-released upside down once you’ve finished the show, though.

There’s a new Avatar: The Last Airbender “fan-led” series making its debut exclusively on YouTube next weekend, though details are light at the moment.

In a rather unusual move, Nickelodeon announced the series on Avatar’s official Youtube channel (opens in new tab) in the community tab. It’ll be part of a 3-day event celebrating Earth Day and running from Thursday, April 22 to Saturday, April 24. In addition to “a new, original series” debuting on the last day of the event, Avatar’s Earth Day celebrations will include “earth-shattering original videos” and a new live stream all three days.

Shortly after Nickelodeon launched a brand new studio dedicated to making new Avatar: The Last Airbender movies and shows, studio president Brian Robbins told Deadline (opens in new tab) that “multiple TV series” are in the works as well as a theatrical film, animation, and “probably multiple films.” Despite this, there are still a lot of questions about the new series debuting on YouTube next weekend.

Responding to a slew of comments on the YouTube announcement, Nickelodeon clarified that the new Avatar: The Last Airbender project is a “fan-led original series” and revealed that more details are coming on Monday, April 19. Another comment from the channel confirms that the series is premiering live on April 24 and will be available permanently on the Avatar YouTube channel afterward.

Just last month, Robbins said Nickelodeon wasn’t ready to reveal the first of many Avatar: The Last Airbender projects “because we’re in early stages of creative development.” That’s just one of the reasons to suspect the forthcoming YouTube series isn’t the full-blown sequel to The Legend of Korra a lot of fans are expecting, though that could be coming soon as well.

Here are all of the upcoming movies we can’t wait to see in 2021.
