Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter has released a new trailer in which Benjamin Walker’s titular President goes toe-to-toe with Rufus Sewell and his vampire uprising.

The new trailer shows Lincoln writing his journal, in which he makes it perfectly clear where his priorities lie. “Whatever history remembers of me,” begins the President, “if it remembers anything at all, it shall only be a fraction of the truth.”

“For whatever else I am, a husband, a lawyer, a president… I shall always think of myself first and foremost as a hunter.” Woooo! Goosebumps anyone? Yes, us too.

If nothing else, Walker certainly has the speech-making down pat, with both his journal reading and performance at the Gettysburg Address getting the adrenaline pumping. Throw in some considerable prowess with an axe, and he should make for a scene-stealing president of the first order.

Directed by Timur Bekmambetov, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter opens in the UK on 20 June 2012. If the vampire genre is getting a little old, at least this one can’t be accused of sticking to the traditional format…

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter recently released a first teaser trailer and now star Benjamin Walker and Timur Bekmembatov have fanned anticipation still further by dropping a few nuggets of info on what we can expect from the historical horror.

“What’s great about it is we can re-examine Abraham Lincoln as a human being,” says Walker. “He’s an idol, we put him on a pedestal and see him as a a sacred figure, and we kind of distance ourselves from him, and kind of relinquished our own responsibility to be like him.”

Bekmembatov is also keen to talk up the significance of Lincoln as a protagonist. “For me, he’s a person who can take responsibility to make a decision because we live in a world where everything’s kind of gray,” explains the director. “There’s no black and white.”

Which is all well and good, but both star and director seem to be skirting around a fairly major plot point: Lincoln fights vampires! Walker acknowledges the premise is outlandish, but urges audiences to suspend their cynicism, and take a punt on the project.

“I imagine there will be some people that will be sceptical,” says the star, “and I would say, give us a shot, because in a landscape of movies where we’ve got a lot of reboots, sequels, franchises and toy movies, we’re doing something new!”

A new poster has been released for upcoming fantasy romp Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter , in which Benjamin Walker’s titular badass sits where his statue traditionally rests, clutching an axe and staring down the camera.

The film, directed by Wanted ’s Timur Bekmambetov, rewrites Lincoln’s childhood so that he lost his mother to a vampire when he was very small. Thoroughly embittered, Abe now spends his evenings hunting down the supernatural pests with the assistance of his trusty axe.

The movie also sees Anthony Mackie star as Lincoln’s longtime buddy William, and according to the Hurt Locker star, their dynamic is similar to that of Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy in 48 Hours .

Mackie and Walker will be joined by a stellar supporting cast including Rufus Sewell, Dominic Cooper and Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Lincoln’s wife, Mary.

At this stage we can’t quite decide whether this one is going to be a fun, supernatural action flick or a slightly half-baked comedy, but the promotional material is certainly keeping us intrigued. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter will open in the UK on 2 August 2012.
