On Xbox, the picture is somewhat similar as the Xbox Series X and Xbox One versions are separate. The lines are slightly blurred as you can buy an XSX disc that will work on an Xbox one console – but it will not be the new-gen version.
The simplest way to navigate is to literally just ensure you buy the version that matches with the console you’ll be playing on. If it happens to be the last-gen version then at least you can play that version o the new-gen machines even if it won’t be the shiniest of versions.
