Pirates Of The Caribbean 4 Crosses $1 Billion Takings Barrier Worldwide

So what do critics know?

(opens in new tab)

Despite almost universal panning from the critics the 3D Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides has surpassed the $1 billion barrier at the worldwide box office. The film has earned $233.7 million domestically and $774 million internationally for a worldwide total of $1,007,703,000. So the murky 3D and lack of sea battles clearly didn’t out off the punters.

The film is now the seventh on the list of the most lucrative films of all-time worldwide and the third Johnny Depp movie to earn more than $1 billion (including Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest at $1.066 billion and Alice in Wonderland at $1.024 billion. On Stranger Tides is also the fourth Walt Disney films to cross $1 billion barrier. Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End is also in the top 10 with takings of $963 million.

Of course, some of that success is down to the increased costs of 3D tickets – not that we’re trying to deny in any way that the film has been a massive success, we’re just a bit miffed that (since the 3D on Pirates 4 was so iffy) it doesn’t look like the dratted gimmick is going away any time soon.
