Considering how massive the D&D library is, narrowing it down to the best Dungeons and Dragons books isn’t easy. In fact, players new and old have an almost-overwhelming level of choice. Where the hell do you start?

That’s why we’ve put together some recommendations of what you should priotize here – this is a list of the best Dungeons and Dragons books for fans, by fans. You’ll get the most out of these suggestions regardless of whether you’re a newcomer inspired by the likes of Stranger Things or a longtime adventurer hoping to expand their collection, and they’ll allow you to dive into one of the best tabletop RPGs without getting lost.

Because the best Dungeons and Dragons books can be expensive, we’ve been sure to include the lowest prices as well. Our bargain-hunting software is always rooting out discounts, so keep your eyes peeled for price cuts as you browse the best D&D books. You’ll be able to see any current discounts by clicking on the button under each entry.

As for how we chose these recommendations, our team only includes products we’ve used extensively ourselves. We run and play D&D games in our spare time, and in our experience, these have been the most useful Dungeons and Dragons books to have on the shelf.

Best Dungeons and Dragons books

1. Player’s Handbook

The best Dungeons and Dragons book overall

Specifications

For: EveryoneFeatures: Core rules and character creation

Reasons to buy

+Everything beginners need+Extensive character creation options+A one-stop shop for all things D&D

Reasons to avoid

-Traits can be limiting

Of all the D&D books out there right now, this is arguably the most important. As a detailed guide on gameplay, rules, how to create a character, and more, it’s a one-stop-shop for everything you need in order to begin your tabletop adventure. That’s true no matter how experienced a player you are, too; along with entry-level advice, the Player’s Handbook is crammed with advanced mechanics for combat and spellcasting. In essence, this is the Dungeons and Dragons bible. It’s beyond useful for players of every stripe, and it’s always handy to have a copy close by.

Even though it doesn’t include every playable species or class in the game, the Player’s Handbook also has more than enough to give you countless hours of gameplay. With nine races to choose from (including the classic elves, dwarves, and halflings), numerous backgrounds you can use, and rules for almost every class, it’s the place to start when making an adventurer for your next campaign.

This is one the best Dungeons and Dragons books for Dungeon Masters as well. Besides featuring info on everything from gods of the multiverse to equipment stats, it provides a few ideas for what the party can do on the side. Do they have a job? Hobbies? The Player’s Handbook gives you plenty to chew on, and we can’t recommend it enough.

2. Dungeon Master’s Guide

The best Dungeons and Dragons book for DMs

Specifications

For: Creating adventuresFeatures: Campaign and world-building tools

Reasons to buy

+Inspiring tips+Extensive creation tools+Pages of advice on world-building

Reasons to avoid

-Left wanting more

If you’ve ever thought about creating adventures for your group, the Dungeon Master’s Guide is essential reading. Besides arming you with all the tools you need for overseeing a game, it covers everything from making an awesome quest to forging a world of your own.

It’s not overwhelming, either. Regardless of what you want to do (be it crafting loot-filled ruins or getting tips on how to use miniatures in-game), the book’s advice is straightforward and easy to understand. Because there are so many helpful prompts, it’s practical as well.

The section on creating non-playable characters is particularly handy. It provides a wealth of traits, mannerisms, and quirks to choose from that can result in memorable individuals that are easier to roleplay. In addition, the fact that you can end up with countless permutations based on its suggestions is useful for time-strapped DMs.

Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse

(Image credit: Wizards of the Coast)

3. Monsters of the Multiverse

The best Dungeons and Dragons book for new characters

Specifications

For: Players and DMsFeatures: 33 new playable races, 250+ monsters

Reasons to buy

+New races to play+Intriguing lore+Loads of unique monsters

Reasons to avoid

-We’ve seen a lot of it before

Tired of the same old character types? Monsters of the Multiverse should go straight onto your wishlist. It allows you to play something beyond traditional fantasy staples and offers 33 new races (ranging from fairies to owl-people) that can be used for your next hero. This makes it one of the best Dungeons and Dragons books by default; it lets your imagination run wild.

Crucially, all of the above will fit into any world. Although most started life elsewhere, they’ve been updated for this book with setting-neutral info. When combined with all-new lore and hand-written, pithy notes from existing characters, it’s a fascinating dive into D&D’s wilder side.

In addition, it features a sprawling 282-page bestiary filled with unusual and powerful monsters. Whole chapters are dedicated to beasts we often see as cannon-fodder, and you’re given a broader, less black-and-white view that makes them more well-rounded than they have been in the past. This isn’t about pigeon-holing cultures into categories of ‘good’ or ‘evil’; it takes a more measured, thoughtful approach.

4. Monster Manual

The best Dungeons and Dragons book for DIY adventures

Specifications

For: Creating encountersFeatures: Rules for almost every monster

Reasons to buy

+Hundreds of entries+Fantastic artwork+Lots of backstory and lore

Reasons to avoid

-Almost TOO much choice

The Monster Manual is a must-have if you’re running your own game; it helps Dungeon Masters call upon a host of nasty creatures to use in battle. Featuring classic foes like goblins and more unusual entries such as the many-eyed beholder, it’s full of surprises with which to challenge your players. Basically? This is the ultimate collection of baddies.

It’s one of the biggest Dungeons and Dragons books, too. There are over 350 pages to enjoy with lavish illustrations throughout, making it one of the most comprehensive fantasy bestiaries out there. Even if you don’t play D&D, it’s an inspiring read from start to finish thanks to the extensive worldbuilding inside.

However, it’s more than a curiosity for DMs. For them, it’s borderline-essential. With stats, abilities, and flavor text for hundreds of creatures, there’s something within the Monster Manual to suit every campaign you can think of. You’ll find useful context on where these enemies can be encountered too, not to mention why. That helps DMs weave monsters into the story naturally, making for a more immersive experience overall.

5. Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything

The best Dungeons and Dragons book for advanced players

Specifications

For: Advanced players and DMsFeatures: New subclasses, DM tools, and inclusive traits

Reasons to buy

+Inventive new subclasses+Playful, whimsical tone+Very accommodating

Reasons to avoid

-Origins section is too short

Few D&D books make bigger promises than Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything. In fact, it sets out to fundamentally change the game. And you know what? It works. Although there are the usual spells and magical items you’d expect, this one adds the Artificer class (tech whizzes that let you play as a medieval Iron Man) to shake things up. New subclasses have been thrown in for good measure, too. These are almost universally excellent, ranging from psionic warriors that battle with the power of their mind to fungi-based Druid circles that feel as if they’ve been pulled from The Last of Us.

What’s more, tweaked character traits are a revelation (even if they could do with more depth). Allowing players to escape rules that potentially force them toward one playstyle or another, it upends the table and lets you live your best fictional life. Want to be an academic orc who’d rather hit the books than smack someone with their axe? Now’s your chance.

In much the same vein, DMs are given more ideas, tools, and quest hooks than they’ll know what to do with. Tasha’s Cauldron winds up being the best D&D update in years as a result.

Dungeons and Dragons books

(Image credit: Wizards of the Coast)

6. Xanathar’s Guide to Everything

The best Dungeons and Dragons book for advanced DMs

Specifications

For: Advanced DMs and playersFeatures: New backgrounds, subclasses, and DM tools

Reasons to buy

+Excellent subclasses+Fun character backstories+Numerous DM tools

Reasons to avoid

-Some overpowered options

The title isn’t an exaggeration; this supplement provides players and Dungeon Masters alike with new rules for almost every part of the game. No matter whether you’re looking for fresh spells, unusual subclasses, or traps in which to catch unsuspecting adventurers, Xanathar’s Guide has you covered.

However, we’d argue that DMs will get the most out of this Dungeons and Dragons book. There are dozens of encounter tables here to make exploration more exciting (and easier, for that matter) along with extensive rules on traps. Even downtime rivalries and pastimes are included, so the advice here should give your games additional spice.

Tying this esoteric knowledge together are asides from Xanathar (a beholder crime lord whose most prized possession is a goldfish), and these add flavor to proceedings. Wry notes are scattered throughout, leaving us with a memorable read.

Candlekeep Mysteries book cover

(Image credit: Wizards of the Coast)

7. Candlekeep Mysteries

The best Dungeons and Dragons book for oneshot games

Specifications

For: Short, one-off sessionsFeatures: 17 oneshot adventures

Reasons to buy

+One-off adventures+Fresh perspectives+Memorable storylines

Reasons to avoid

-Some adventures are better than others

Although prewritten adventures make up some of the best Dungeons and Dragons books, they’re a massive time commitment. Candlekeep Mysteries bucks that trend. Offering a series of one-off stories that can be plugged into any campaign, world, or setting, these quests can be completed in a single sitting. That makes them a great fit for groups that can’t meet regularly enough for weekly or monthly sessions.

More importantly, those adventures are great. Despite being united by some sort of mystery driving the plot (hence the name), there’s a tremendous amount of variety on offer. Traditional tales of derring-do, horror, satirical comedy, and more can be found within the pages of this D&D book, so there’s bound to be something to suit your party.

There’s a refreshing variety of perspectives on offer throughout, too. Candlekeep Mysteries isn’t limited to classic European fantasy, either; adventurers will visit places inspired by mythologies and cultures from around the world. Because so many of the stories told there are sure to stay with you for a long time, it’s well worth a look.

best Dungeons and Dragons books

8. Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft

The best Dungeons and Dragons book for horror fans

Specifications

For: Horror fansFeatures: New horror settings and worldbuilding tools

Reasons to buy

+Over 30 horror settings to play in+Inspiring tips on worldbuilding+Intriguing quest ideas

Reasons to avoid

-Lacks fun in-character notes

This D&D book is unsettling, but that’s the point. A whistle-stop tour of horror tropes both old and new, it’s crammed with tips on how to inject the genre into your games. Based around the horror-tinged realms of Ravenloft (prison-worlds created to contain evil Dark Lords in their own personal hell), it provides a baked-in excuse to explore any kind of fear-inducing cliche you can think of.

Like Candlekeep Mysteries, it’s got creativity to spare as well. In spite of a brisk pace that rattles through over 30 realms in total, the worldbuilding of Van Richten’s Guide is second to none. You get a real sense of each domain even though they’re only given three to four pages each, and all of them contain numerous quest hooks to fuel your campaigns. Some of these are compelling enough to maintain full-length adventures in their own right, so there’s plenty of value for your money here.

The same can be said about the book’s suggestions for creating your own horror worlds and characters. Namely, it’s insightful while also being laser-focused on what makes the genre tick (if you enjoy creating your own homebrew settings, it’s hard not to come away inspired). Sure, the genre isn’t for everyone. But the tips in Van Richten’s Guide are. This is comfortably one of the best Dungeons and Dragons books as a result.

Save £4 – Seeing as it’s been hit with a 22% reduction as part of today’s Lego deals, this offer on a blocky version of Mando and Grogu is dangerously close to impulse-purchase territory. That’s almost its lowest price, too; with the exception of a one-off discount to £12 in September 2021 (which it hasn’t gotten anywhere near since), this is the cheapest it’s ever been.

Lego Star Wars Dark Trooper Attack | £27.99 £19.99 at Amazon (opens in new tab)

Lego Classic Medium Creative Brick Box | £29.99 £12.50 at Amazon (opens in new tab)

Lego Star Wars The Child | £69.99 £55.99 at Amazon (opens in new tab)
Save £13 – This posable version of the adorable little alien/frog/thing has tumbled in price and stayed well below its list price so it’s worth taking a look if you want something Mando-related for your shelf. It won’t necessarily stay so low in price for long, so acting quickly before it vanishes might be a good idea.

Lego DC Batman Cowl | £54.99 £45.95 at Amazon (opens in new tab)
Save £10 – As is only right, this display piece comes in black… and sometimes very, very dark grey. That’s a good price overall for the helmet, and even though it’s not the cheapest we’ve seen the kit go for, it’s still pretty good on the whole.

Lego Star Wars Hoth AT-ST Walker | £44.99 £39.99 at Amazon (opens in new tab)
Save £5The Battle of Hoth was one of the coolest moments in the original trilogy (quite literally), and you can recreate a part of it with your own AT-ST model, which has an accessible cockpit, opening roof, shooters, and more. It also comes with Chewbacca, Hoth AT-ST pilot, and Hoth Rebel Trooper mini-figs.

Lego Star Wars Millennium Falcon (reduced packaging) | £149.99 £129.95 at Amazon (opens in new tab)

We see impressive reductions all year ’round

The trick is judging whether the offer is worth your time or not. For that, we keep an eye on price-matching sites to determine a product’s average cost and whether it’s been cheaper in the past (and how often it’s dropped in price). That way we can identify and bring you the very best discounts and Lego sales.

Want to try it out yourself? We use sites like CamelCamelCamel (opens in new tab), and the process is easy. Simply paste a Lego deal’s URL into the search bar to find out the product’s biggest discount, average cost, and highest price over a set period of time.

These Prime Day Xbox Series S deals are bundling together consoles and SteelSeries headsets for up to $80 off the normal price, which means it’s a great time to make the leap into the current console generation on the cheap.

To put these savings into context, the cheaper of the two Prime Day Xbox deals below gets you an Xbox Series S and a headset for less than you’d usually pay for just an Xbox Series S. Specifically, the bundle that comes with the Xbox Series S and the SteelSeries Arctis 3 headset will run you $294.98 (was $369.98) (opens in new tab), which is a few bucks shy of the Xbox Series S’s MSRP. So, basically, you get a discounted console *and* a free headset. That’s tough to beat.

The bundle with the fantastic Arctis 9X, of course, is a little more spendy at $419.98 (was $499.99) (opens in new tab), but you’re still getting a stellar deal there too. It’s also worth noting that both headsets included in these two different Xbox Series S deals are among the best gaming headsets money can buy, so you can count on them to last even if you pick the more affordable option. Just keep in mind that these are lighting deals, which mean they won’t last long.

Anyway, let’s cut to the chase. Here are those details clearly laid out, and keep scrolling for plenty more Prime Day gaming deals further down the page.

Xbox Series S + SteelSeries Arctis 9X Wired Gaming Headset | $499.98 $419.98 at Amazon (opens in new tab)

It might not offer you quite the same performance as those controllers designed to give you a competitive edge, but that’s more than made up for by the unique visuals.

The best Razer controllers are some of the greatest pads available regardless of whether you play on console or PC. Some Razer controllers even beat out models manufactured by console companies.

It’s worth noting that some Razer controllers can be at a higher end of one’s budget but they justify this price point with the features and customization which is on offer. You also get exceptional design and build quality. When picking up one of these gamepads its also likely that you’re picking up one of the best PC controllers as they all work flawlessly with Windows.

Razer offer different levels of controllers, if you’re on the hunt for something to suit more professional gaming then you may lean more towards the ‘Tournament Edition’ types. However, if you’re not fussed about competitive edge and just want a good quality long lasting controller then take a look at the ‘Ultimate’ variants. Both are chock-full of features and options, though, and each is worth a serious look.

We’ve organized the list below to make it easier to find a suitable controller based on your platform and required compatibility as Razer offer a range of options.

1. Razer Raiju Tournament

The best Razer controller for eSports

Specifications

Wireless: Yes, can be used Wired. Powered By: Rechargeable BatteryBattery Life: 19 Hours

Reasons to buy

+Ergonomic design and premium feel+Great features+Tactile button feedback+Easy accompanying app

Reasons to avoid

-Asymmetrical so may not suit all users

The Razer Raiju Tournament Edition is an excellent pick for those browsing Razer controllers. Though it’s geared more towards sports and competitive play, it is still a wonderful controller for those looking for something premium and quality, and different to the DualShock 4.

It has a wonderful weight and build-quality you can really feel. However, underneath the premium exterior is a whole host of programmable options thanks to the corresponding Razer app. Just sync the app to the controller via Bluetooth and away you go, allowing you to tweak the function of each button however you see fit and even set the level of rumble on either side of the gamepad. In terms of sheer versatility, the Razer Raiju Tournament Edition certainly earns its keep.

This Raiju model succeeds in the realms of design, too: it’s of the asymmetric school of thought more often seen on Xbox controllers. What’s more, the design also represents the best of both worlds, as evidenced by the split D-pad and emphasis on the central touchpad. It’s one of the top Razer controllers going, period – particularly thanks to the rear buttons that allow you to react faster without having to take your thumbs off the thumbsticks.

2. Razer Raiju Ultimate

The best premium Razer controller

Specifications

Wireless: Yes, but can be used wired.Powered By: Rechargeable batteryBattery Life: 11 hours

Reasons to buy

+Premium design and build+Very customizable+Features and programmable buttons coming out the wazoo+RGB lighting

Reasons to avoid

-Asymmetrical so may not suit all users.

The Razer Raiju Ultimate is perfect for those PS4 players looking to get increased versatility and functionality from their Razer controller. The customization, multi-functional buttons, and interchangeable D-pad and thumbsticks are all great factors that are useful to the dedicated eSports player craving an edge. They also make for an interesting addition to those who prefer ‘story games’ but are looking for shortcuts, or their own way to play.

The press of every button is satisfyingly tactile, and even the touchpad feels good to tap, with it never being in doubt whether presses registered either in wired or wireless modes. Not having to press L2 and R2 as far down when trigger lock is activated helps as well; it’s a small feature almost every PS4 player will enjoy and be satisfied by. The extra ‘M’ buttons on the back of the controller will take some getting used to, but once you’ve mastered them, the Raiju Ultimate will be your go-to pad. They really help to reduce finger travel-time.

While it does have a large entry price, if you ever have the chance to grab a discount on this premium Razer controller for PS4, you’d be mad not to jump on that opportunity.

3. Razer Wolverine V2

A Series X controller with more customization options

Specifications

Wireless: NoPowered By: USBBattery Life: N/A

Reasons to buy

+Tactile buttons+Trigger-stop switches+Extra remappable shoulder buttons

Reasons to avoid

-Strange View/Menu button placement-Trigger and bumper buttons grind when pressed together

The latest in the Razer controller lineup, this is the successor to the entry-level Wolverine controller. It’s been given a modern and considerable makeover to coincide with the release of the Xbox Series X and this Razer controller might just be for you if you’re after some extra customization: there are extra remappable buttons up top; and you can switch to hair triggers to reduce the actuation depth for a quicker response.

It has a high-ish price tag but largely warrants it, as, for you’re money, you’re getting exceptional grip on the front side as well as rear; improved tactile buttons; a very comfortable-but-chunky design; and the speeds of a wired connection. There’s no wireless option yet, sadly, but this will at least mean zero lag on inputs and you don’t have to worry about batteries either. The cable is nearly 10ft/3m long so should be fine for most players.

The top Razer Xbox controller is the Wolverine Ultimate, without question. It’s one of the highest-quality Razer controllers out of this entire guide, too.

Featuring the classic Razer Chroma RGB lighting that changes while you play, it matches those visuals with interchangeable thumbsticks and d-pads, four extra back buttons, and two extra shoulder buttons. Everything is within reach of your fingers no matter the controls you need or the game you’re playing, increasing response-time dramatically.

The Wolverine Ultimate does have the ‘Ultimate’ price tag, but its features, quality design, and build largely justify it. It gives you the undeniable precision, quality, and pizazz a Razer controller should. In fact, it’s the go-to controller of a few Xbox players we know – and for good reason.

5. Razer Wolverine Tournament Edition

The best Xbox Razer controller for eSports

Specifications

Wireless: NoPowered by: USBBattery life: N/A

Reasons to buy

+4 remappable buttons+Short hair trigger locks+Non-slip rubber grip+Elegant Chroma lighting

Reasons to avoid

-Hefty price tag to go with all of the features

The Razer Wolverine Tournament Edition manages to balance advanced customizability and pared-back style, offering Xbox One players flexibility without being garish or ugly. The primary way the Razer Wolverine Tournament Edition achieves this is via four remappable buttons, two of which are back paddles that are easily accessed during the heat of play. This helps reduce finger travel-time, meaning you don’t ever need to take your thumbs off the thumbsticks. That’s crucial in competitive games, and it provides a few extra milliseconds that can save your (digital) life.

Other advancements this Razer controller features are hair-trigger locks, which reduce the actuation needed in the buttons and thus making the act of firing faster possible in first-person shooters. Also aiding competitive players is the controller’s ergonomic non-slip rubber grip, ensuring they always have a handle on their in-game actions.

If you’re an Xbox player who loves the competitive scene, this controller is well worth considering.

6. Razer Kishi

The best Razer mobile controller

Specifications

Wireless: NoPowered by: Phone BatteryBattery Life: N/A

Reasons to buy

+Excellent thumbsticks+Fits lots of smartphones+Clever, space-saving design+No latency

Reasons to avoid

-Locked to platform

With mobile games becoming steadily more complex, the drawbacks of touch screen controls have never been more apparent. Trying to play a shooter like Fortnite or Call of Duty just doesn’t work as well on phones, for example. That’s where the Razer Kishi comes into its own. Acting as a case for your device, it connects via the USB-C port and adds standardized controls on either side – it’s like a stretched out Xbox One controller.

This is a revelation in use. Because it adds clickable thumbsticks, face buttons, and shoulder triggers, it’s just like using a ‘normal’ controller for your phone games. That’ll be especially useful with Project xCloud, the Xbox streaming service; the Kishi is compatible with it, meaning you can be playing everything from Gears of War to Halo on your phone without having to suffer through touch screen-related woes.

The only downside of this product is that if you purchase it to work with an iPhone you will not be able to switch over to Android due to how the connection is made and vice versa, so be sure to choose the correct model.

How do we test our Razer controllers?

It’s worth noting that we don’t test every controller which makes it into our buying guide but we do try out best to test most of them. You can find out more information about our opinion on each controller within the specific review linked below. In brief, every controller that we have had our hands on is used in a series of different video games to accommodate for most genres. This means that we’ll test the responsiveness of the sticks, face buttons, bumpers, triggers, and any other additional features found on the unit. If a controller is wired or relies on rechargeable batteries, then the duration of the lifespan is tested, too. The same can be said for any specialist software, such as drivers, that may be included with the gamepad as well.

For more on how we test controllers at GamesRadar+ check out our full article, and for something more representative of our holistic approach to the latest gear, check out our Hardware Policy

Given the reputation, it’s no real surprise that the company has taken what it knows so well in the form of their Razer headsets, Razer laptops, or Razer streaming gear and applied it to their many Razer controllers.

They don’t make ’em like they used to, especially where the best classic board games are concerned. These all-time greats have definitely earned their spot in the hall of fame, and many still sneak onto lists of the best board games despite being decades old. Indeed, some have become cultural phenomenons that show no signs of slowing down. How many versions of Monopoly are there now, for example? We lost count a long time ago.

As such, we’ve been gathering some of our favorites right here to brighten your day with a hit of nostalgia. Although there wasn’t room to include everything, you’ll find a whistle-stop tour of the best classic board games from yesteryear below. 1. Catan

The best classic board game overall

Specifications

Players: 3 – 4Ages: 10+Difficulty: HardLasts: 90 mins

Reasons to buy

+Strategic+Trading and deals+Unusual mechanics

Reasons to avoid

-Some rules can be frustrating

In the grand scheme of things, Catan is a fresh-faced addition to the best classic board games – it was first published in 1995. However, it deserves to lead the pack. A resource management extravaganza where you’re tasked with constructing a civilization from scratch, it sees players trading and building settlements to get the upper hand.

This may sound simple, but you’ll need plenty of cunning to achieve victory. Players win points by building towns, and you’ll have to round up a variety of resources to do that. Because the board (and the locations that give you those resources) is randomised, this makes clever placement crucial. And while probability-based dice rolls introduce an element of chance, foresight is rewarded.

You’ll never have all the goods you need either, so bartering becomes essential. This makes Catan an intriguing balancing act; swapping wood, clay, stone, or sheep may help you in the short-term, but it might also bring your opponent one step closer to victory.

2. HeroQuest

The best classic adventure board game

Specifications

Players: 2 – 5Ages: 14+Difficulty: HardLasts: 60+ mins

Reasons to buy

+Original gameplay remains intact+Reimagined art and miniatures+Unique competitive gameplay

Reasons to avoid

-Very, very cheesy

The original HeroQuest was an ’80s child through and through; it was populated by loincloth-wearing barbarians, hulking orcs, wizards with dreadful fashion sense, and a classic high fantasy story of good battling evil. It was, in a word, marvellous.

Fast-forward a few decades and the classic board game dungeon-crawl is back for round two. Revised and republished by Hasbro, it gives the original game a facelift for the modern day. Although the core mechanics are largely intact, this version of HeroQuest sports new artwork, updated miniatures, and sturdier terrain to populate your underground lairs. There’s even a fully-voiced app for solo play if you want to go it alone. And yes, the brawwwwdswooord is here too.

When combined with gameplay that’s not too dissimilar to a Dungeon Master from the best tabletop RPGs (putting one player in control of the game’s monsters), HeroQuest is still as enchanting as it was all those years ago. OK, it may have been superseded by flashier alternatives in its absence. But in terms of good old fashioned sword and sorcery, it can’t be beaten.

3. 221B Baker Street

The best classic board game with a story

Specifications

Players: 2 – 6Ages: 10+Difficulty: ModerateLasts: 60 mins

Reasons to buy

+Each case has a unique written story+75 cases overall+A more advanced Clue / Cluedo

Reasons to avoid

-Some clues haven’t aged well

Designed in 1975 and based on the sleuthing of Sherlock Holmes, 221B Baker Street is best described as a souped-up version of Clue. Its mechanics work in much the same way, but everything is tied up in a shiny wrapper of story.

Players work their way through 75 unique cases of murder, and each one begins with a detailed narrative to set the scene (as you might expect from a game that’s decades old, there’s an expansion pack of 50 new cases to keep you busy as well). You’ll then have to figure out who the killer is, their motive, what weapon they used, and more by hitting the streets of Victorian London. Figure it out and you’ll rush back to 221B Baker Street before smugly reading out your theory like Mr. Holmes himself. Basically, it’s a race to the finish-line.

Getting to that point won’t be easy. Each location on the board could harbour a vital clue, but you’ll have to work for them; players must solve riddles, word-games, or read between the lines to blow this case wide open. There’s even a chance for underhand trickery – everyone can ‘lock’ a location and hide whatever clue is inside, but doing so draws attention. 221B then becomes a game of bluffing. Is the hidden info useful, or are your rivals sending you on a wild goose chase?

4. Risk

The best classic strategy board game

Specifications

Players: 2 – 5Ages: 10+Difficulty: ModerateLasts: 60 mins

Reasons to buy

+Tactical+Dice rolls level the playing field+Lots of licensed versions

Reasons to avoid

-Dice mechanics can be arbitrary

Much like Monopoly, Risk is a classic board game that’s been through more iterations than we can count. However, it’s still the same excellent strategy epic it was back when it launched in 1957 no matter whether you’re sticking with the standard version or branching out with the fantasy-themed The Lord of the Rings edition (opens in new tab).

A game focused on conquering regions around the world to create an empire, it revolves around armies and dice rolls that simulate combat. As the name would suggest, you won’t get anywhere by being a pacifist; the winners are those who go out on a limb to snatch territory from their opponents. The bigger the risk, the bigger the reward.

While it doesn’t rank amongst the best cooperative board games, this leads to plenty of political tussling with alliances, betrayals, and wins snatched from the jaws of defeat. Rolling dice in battle may not seem exciting, but when your lone unit has managed to hold off an overwhelming army for many turns in a row, it’s one of the most satisfying feelings you can get at the tabletop.

5. Trivial Pursuit

The best classic trivia board game

Specifications

Players: 2 – 6Ages: 16+Difficulty: HardLasts: 60 mins

Reasons to buy

+Everyone can get involved+Broad range of categories+Universal appeal

Reasons to avoid

-Some questions are too hard

For those that love quizzes and tests of knowledge, it doesn’t get any better than Trivial Pursuit. This is undoubtedly one of the best classic board games for exercising your gray matter, and it’s every bit as good now as it was when it first appeared in the early 1980s. Throw in a variety of licensed adaptations ranging from Harry Potter (opens in new tab) to Star Wars (opens in new tab) and you’ve got a winner on your hands.

The original version listed here plays host to six major categories: Entertainment, Sports and Leisure, Geography, Arts and Literature, Science and Nature, and History. It’s a well-rounded lineup that everyone can get involved in, making it ideal for parties or larger family gatherings. A focus on general knowledge instead of niche topics means no-one will feel left behind, either. You don’t even need to worry about the questions being out of date; thanks to the game’s age, it’s been tweaked with more contemporary material.

What we’re left with is reminiscent of the best quiz shows. Players answer any questions they land on while moving around the board, and they have to collect ‘wedges’ that fill up their wheel. Once this is done, they put it all on the line with one final question. Trivial Pursuit is surprisingly tense as a result, and that secures it as one of the best party board games despite having more than a few decades under its belt.

6. Boggle

The best quick classic board game

Specifications

Players: 1+Ages: 8+Difficulty: MediumLasts: 3+ mins

Reasons to buy

+Quick+Affordable+Portable

Reasons to avoid

-Timer adds anxiety

Word games are a much-loved tabletop staple, and it doesn’t get any better than Boggle. It’s actually proven to be so popular since its 1972 debut that Junior (opens in new tab), super-sized (opens in new tab), and Folio versions (opens in new tab) have since been introduced.

The beauty of this classic board game is that it’s so simple. Players have to make up as many words as they can from a four-by-four tray of 16 letters, and to up the ante, they only have three minutes in which to complete their search. This adds a much-needed element of pressure to get the heart racing, especially because words featuring the most letters pay out more points. Oh, and if anyone puts down the same word? It’s discredited straight away (bummer).

This forces players to think outside the box and stretch themselves. Other quick, portable word games like Upwords and Bananagrams are excellent, but for our money, Boggle remains the winner.

7. Clue / Cluedo

The best classic mystery board game

Specifications

Players: 2 – 6Ages: 8+Difficulty: EasyLasts: 45 mins

Reasons to buy

+Satisfying process of elimination+Straightforward+Great in a large group

Reasons to avoid

-Simplistic

If you like to think of yourself as an armchair detective, Clue – or Cluedo, if you’re from the UK – puts those skills to the test. Indeed, it’s one of the best murder mystery board games for adults out there despite having been around since 1943.

It’s certainly got a good elevator pitch; trapped inside a stately manor that’s hiding secrets of its own, players have to uncover the truth and catch a killer. Who murdered the victim, where did they do the deed, and which weapon was used? This classic board game is a race against time to gather evidence before everyone else does. Such methodical gameplay helps you feel like an investigator worthy of Poirot, especially due to its focus on the process of elimination (no pun intended).

Being able to play mind-games with your opponents raises the stakes, too. Seeing which clues they’re prioritising lets you connect the dots yourself, and that gives cunning sleuths an advantage. Well, sometimes. This can also be used against players if their foes possess a good poker face. It’s endearingly devious.

8. Monopoly

The best classic board game for families

Specifications

Players: 2 – 6Ages: 8+Difficulty: ModerateLasts: 90 mins

Reasons to buy

+Accessible+Moreish+Loads of different versions

Reasons to avoid

-Games can last too long

There’s no way we could have a list of the best classic board games without mentioning Monopoly. It’s one of the most enduring board games for families ever made, having thrived through numerous updates, revisions, adaptations, and spin-offs since its inception in the early 1900s. And frankly, there’s no stopping it – Monopoly has a special edition for almost every pop-culture hit we can think of. Friends (opens in new tab)? Check. The Avengers (opens in new tab)? Absolutely. Fortnite (opens in new tab)? You betcha. There’s even a version featuring Super Mario (opens in new tab) and co, complete with a mystery block that promises to shake up the formula.

No matter which version you get, Monopoly’s gameplay remains the same. You know the drill – it’s all about buying property and building houses or hotels that you can then charge rent on whenever anyone else lands there. It’s brilliantly straightforward, and the game has lasted for well over a century because it’s so easy to learn. Even though newer alternatives shake things up, the game never loses that sense of accessibility.

There’s a certain collectomania to it as well. Managing to gather and then build on a complete set of locations is satisfying, as is amassing wads of toy money. It’s all about scheming your way to the top, and we’ve got to respect the hustle.

9. Scrabble

The best classic board game for relaxing

Specifications

Players: 2 – 4Ages: 8+Difficulty: MediumLasts: 45 mins

Reasons to buy

+Chilled out+Exercises your brain+Can make you feel very smug

Reasons to avoid

-Possibility to get a set of rubbish letters

Scrabble has been around for over 80 years, and it isn’t difficult to see why. A chilled-out word game that’s perfect for whiling away a lazy afternoon, it’s meditative and relaxing. What’s more, it gives your brain a fair workout.

You know how it works: Scrabble tasks you with making words from the random letters in your possession. Certain combinations – and specific tiles – offer more points, but you can only add to words that already exist on the board. It’s a blissfully uncomplicated concept, but still requires flexibility and skill.

Better still, it’s different every single time. Because you never know what combination of letters you’ll end up with, you’ll always need to think on your feet. It’s truly one of the best classic board games out there, and perfect for a Sunday afternoon at home.

10. Battleship

The best classic board game for kids

Specifications

Players: 2Ages: 7+Difficulty: EasyLasts: 15 mins

Reasons to buy

+Tense+Methodical+Relies on intuition

Reasons to avoid

-A lot of guesswork to begin with

Much like Monopoly or Clue, you can’t have a list of the best classic board games without featuring Battleship. It’s existed in one form or another since the 1930s, and it went on to worldwide success after being brought to the tabletop in 1967. There’s even an underwhelming movie adaptation featuring the U.S. Navy vs aliens.

Pitched as the ‘ultimate battle of wits’, players start by secretly placing their battleships on a grid that’s hidden from their rival. They then take it in turns to choose coordinates, fire a missile, and see if it hits anything. This makes it a game of elimination in both senses of the word; you systematically hunt down your opponent’s craft before they get yours.

Battleship stays fresh no matter how many times you play as a result. Your opponent’s fleet will always end up in a different place, meaning you can’t ever rest on your laurels. Dogged persistence and a stroke of luck are the only things you can count on, and that’s true no matter which version you try. While there are fully-voiced electronic kits, digital equivalents, travel sets, and beyond, they all rank amongst the best board games for kids thanks to ageless mechanics underpinning them all.

Classic board games – FAQ

This doesn’t come at the expense of accessibility

We’re big fans of 221B Baker Street, too. It plays in much the same way as Clue, but the systems on offer are more complex and they push the idea further with an in-depth narrative. However, this doesn’t come at the expense of accessibility. Similarly, HeroQuest is one of the best adventure board games from days gone by – it’s still remarkably sound more than 30 years after it first hit shelves.

The best case for Nintendo Switch and Switch OLED

Specifications

Design: ClamshellProtection: Hard EVA shell, screen coverStorage: Mesh pouch and 8 games

Reasons to buy

+Room for accessories+Affordable+Hard EVA shell

Reasons to avoid

-Needs more padding

A strong case is one of the best Nintendo Switch accessories you’ll buy. Orzly takes the kitchen-sink approach to storage; this case will fit the console, multiple Joy-Cons, games, cables, and SD cards inside without any fuss. It’s not too hefty or expensive either. And most importantly? It’ll keep the console safe as houses while you’re out and about.

This model is also compatible with the OLED model, thanks to the extra wiggle room the brand built into the shell itself. Your Joy-Con will all still neatly fall into the indented hard shell, with plenty of room leftover up top for accessories, cleaning cloths, and headphones. You’re also getting space for eight games in the screen cover as well.

In short, the Orzly is easily one of the best Nintendo Switch cases on the market right now. There’s even a Switch Lite version (see below), so users of the handheld-only console don’t have to miss out.

Grippy and sturdy in equal measure, the Mumba will make you feel more secure when taking your Switch out with you. Happily, it also fits into the Orzly carry case we mentioned above. Using both results in the perfect double-threat to keep your console safe in use and during travel.

Reasons to buy

+Can be used as a pair or solo+Multiple colors available+Packed with features

Reasons to avoid

-Occasional Joy-Con drift

Joy-Cons are the best Nintendo Switch controllers on the market. Included with the standard console, they can be used alone, in pairs, and on the detachable screen in handheld mode. This versatility makes them perfect for multiplayer sessions – get two pairs and you can share them between four people. While the priciest of Nintendo’s controller options, they really are one of the best Nintendo Switch accessories on the market, and you’re essentially grabbing two controllers here too.

Although there have been issues here and there with the dreaded ‘Joy-Con drift’ where the left thumbstick goes faulty, they’re generally reliable and easy to use. In fact, they give the old Nintendo Wii Remotes a run for their money.

A lot of that is due to their motion control, but it’s mostly due to the fact that they’re smaller, more comfortable, and provide greater flexibility by having an analogue stick on each side.

Sometimes Joy-Cons aren’t enough; sometimes you want something a bit more precise. That’s where the official Nintendo Pro Controller comes in. This classically-styled handset has a layout that draws on everything from the Gamecube to Xbox One, and it’s a must-have for games like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate or Splatoon 2. It’s accurate, comfortable, and reliable.

After picking up a Nintendo Switch Pro controller, the Joy-Cons have barely left the dock on my Nintendo Switch

Nintendo Switch Pro Controller review

Don’t think it’s a cheeky money spinner for Nintendo that you won’t get any benefit from, either. Pick one up and you can immediately tell that it’s a premium controller. Textured handles provided plenty of much-needed precision in our testing, and we found that the thumbsticks provide far greater control than those of the Joy-Con as well, particularly in fiddly titles like Fuser.

We did find, however, that the face buttons are a strangely high profile compared to the rest of the body, and could be more comfortable with slightly rounded edges. We were also impressed by the overall balance and feel as well, noting the solid design with no hollow plastic noises.

Sure, you can pick up similar ‘pro controllers’ for a lot less from other manufacturers (like the generally excellent PowerA). However, you’re better off with the official Nintendo model in our experience. Not only is the build-quality excellent, it boasts Amiibo functionality that third-party alternatives lack.

Want a more traditional controller for Switch, but don’t want to pay loads for it? No problem – third-party manufacturers like PowerA are here to help. Their wired and wireless pro controllers are of an excellent quality and feature motion control to go with their slick design.

Happily, they also come in many different designs. That includes everything from Animal Crossing to Pokemon, so you’re bound to find something that suits you in their range.

The only thing to bear in mind is the fact that they don’t have Amiibo functionality. You’ll need an official Pro Controller or Joy-Con for that.

Specifications

Reasons to avoid

-No Amiibo functionality

The Hori Split Pad Pro is perfect for anyone looking for a cheaper set of replacement Joy-Con or those who find the original controllers a little too small to comfortable settle in with. The larger ergonomic design provides a far better grip than the official gamepad (though the Hori model is still officially licensed), and you’re even getting some additional functionality in those rear bumpers as well. Add a lower price point and a real D-Pad and you’ve got yourself a compelling Nintendo Switch accessory.

The best arcade fight stick for Nintendo Switch

Reasons to buy

+Fully moddable +Turbo function+Dedicated macro buttons+Wireless connection+NES-style aesthetic

Reasons to avoid

-A little difficult to mod

The 8BitDo Arcade Stick is nowhere near as expensive as some of the most luxurious models out there, but still packs a surprising number of features into a sub-$100 / £100 price point. From a fully moddable array of buttons to additional macro features and a wireless connection, there’s plenty going on here to keep any fighting fan in the game.

While more premium devices will make that modding journey a little easier for you, you can still swap sticks and components under the hood here. Plus, you’ll be able to configure everything using the 8BitDo Ultimate software as well. Add an NES-style aesthetic, solid build quality, and compatibility with PC and you’ve got a solid package.

1. SanDisk Ultra 128GB MicroSD

The best memory card to start off

Specifications

Storage: 128GBFormat: MicroSDHC, microSDXCTransfer speed: up to 100MB/s

Reasons to buy

+Relatively cheap+Plenty of storage space+Will last you a while

Reasons to avoid

-Less value than larger cards

Regardless of the version you have (be it a classic Switch or the new Switch Lite), a drawback to the latest Nintendo console is its limited storage space. You’ll only get 32GB of internal memory out of the box, and this won’t carry you far. It’ll do just fine to begin with, sure, but games, updates, and DLC take up a lot of memory these days. That’s why SD cards are one of the best Nintendo Switch accessories to pick up on day one. They’ll boost your system’s storage by a long way, and they aren’t too pricey either.

To get specific, we’d recommend the SanDisk Ultra 128GB card. This is enough for five to ten big games or a load of smaller titles, so it’ll definitely keep you going for a while. We’d say it’s one of the best Nintendo Switch SD cards (opens in new tab) overall.

2. SanDisk Ultra 256GB MicroSD

The best memory card for future proofing

Specifications

Storage: 256GBFormat: MicroSDHC, microSDXCTransfer speed: up to 100MB/s

Reasons to buy

+More storage space+Better value for money

Reasons to avoid

-More expensive

If you don’t think 128GB will cut it, SanDisk also produces cards all the way up to 1TB for the Nintendo Switch (and the system will take up to 2TB). Those cards will cost you significantly more, but at between $30-$40 (£30-£40), 256GB is a nice compromise.

We’d recommend this size storage card if you prefer to download your games but don’t plan on picking up every major release. Some of the latest games can take up some serious space, so if you are planning on stacking your library with every title we’d recommend moving up to 512GB (opens in new tab). That said, 256GB will be more than enough for the vast majority of players.

1. Razer Barracuda X

The best Nintendo Switch gaming headset overall

Specifications

Acoustic design: Closed backConnection: Wireless (USB-C receiver)Drivers: 40mm Razer TriforceWeight: 250gBattery: up to 20 hours

Reasons to buy

+Excellent audio quality+Wireless+USB-C connection

Reasons to avoid

-No additional software settings

The Razer Barracuda X is the best Nintendo Switch headset (opens in new tab) on the market right now, thanks to its simple plug and play design and excellent audio quality. We still use the Razer Barracuda X across a wide range of platforms, it’s become a daily driver.

It was refreshing to find a stripped back approach to features when we got our hands on this headset. There’s no expensive extra features in here to inflate that price tag and compete with esports-grade cups; just a solid set of headphones with a clear focus on sound quality and everyday quality of life.

There’s an ease of use that seems to have been forgotten in recent years, as brands chase the needs of eSports professionals without considering the budgets of their everyday fans.

Razer Barracuda X review

Don’t be fooled by that easy USB-C wireless connection, super comfortable earcups, and impressive directional audio – this is still a particularly affordable piece of kit. In fact, one of the most compelling aspects of the Razer Barracuda X’s prowess in the Nintendo Switch accessories arena is its value for money. You’re getting some pretty powerful audio here – all for under $100 / £100.

We tested the Barracuda X across consoles, and were pleased to find a nicely balanced sound profile, with some excellent detailing in the mid-ranges and the power to blast when the time was right. That’s because the bass is slightly emphasized here, but in an appreciate-your-shotgun-boom way, rather than the growling fuzz we usually hear in headsets in this price range. It’s also one of the most comfortable headsets we’ve had the pleasure of sinking some longer sessions into; never pinching the ear thanks to that thicker padding, and keeping temperatures low all at the same time.

Because of that no-nonsense design, the Razer Barracuda X is perfectly tuned to use with the Nintendo Switch. There’s a solid battery life here (we generally only need to charge once a week), you’re not spending too much to worry about taking these cups out and about with you, and that USB-C wireless connection slots straight into the console’s form factor as well.

2. HyperX Cloud Alpha

The best wired Nintendo Switch headset

Specifications

Acoustic design: Closed backConnection: WiredDrivers: 50mmWeight: 336gBattery: NA

Reasons to buy

+Durable build quality+Excellent sound+Solid value for money

Reasons to avoid

-Non-foldable design-No additional customization

If you want the right balance between price and performance for your Nintendo Switch, look no further than the HyperX Cloud Alpha (opens in new tab). We fell in love with the minimalist aesthetic when we first got our hands on this classic headset, and the design improvements since those days have only improved things.

You’re getting a headset that simply works and offers one thing you often don’t see on cheaper headsets – quality

HyperX Cloud Alpha review

There’s an air of class surrounding the red accents, embroidered logo, and heavy stitching around the plush leatherette that stood out here. There’s no need for glaring RGB here, these cups are naturally beautiful.

Sliding them on, though, and the real value for money becomes evident. We noted a particularly strong frequency response range in our testing, making for particularly rich sound quality. With a solid bass and crystal clear mids, the Cloud Alpha performs well whether you’re diving into a Doom session or leaping across some Super Mario stages.

HyperX does tout ‘Dual Chamber Drivers’ in its marketing, which supposedly work to keep your audio distortion-free and clear up your soundstage. In truth, we didn’t notice too much going on behind the scenes here, though did appreciate the naturally clear balancing.

You won’t be paying over the odds here, either. You can pick up a HyperX Cloud Alpha for less than $80 / £70, and it’s a great pair of cans – easily one of the best Nintendo Switch accessories out there.

3. Roccat Syn Buds Core

The best budget earbuds for the Nintendo Switch

Specifications

Reasons to buy

+Impressive performance in lighter soundscapes+Excellent price+Comfortable

Reasons to avoid

-Struggles with heavier soundscapes-Choppy directional audio

The Roccat Syn Buds Core are the perfect travel companion for your Nintendo Switch. Cheap enough not to worry about too much, and without the curses of batteries and Bluetooth connections to hold you back, the Syn Buds Core excel in their simplicity.

The Roccat Syn Buds Core are a solid everyday driver to keep in your carry case

Roccat Syn Buds Core review

Sure, they’re going to struggle to hold their own against more premium models, and certainly can’t offer the all encompassing soundstage of an over-ear set of headphones, but keeping these ready to go is going to be much handier than you might think. Of course, during our initial testing period we were using these buds as a daily driver, but since then they have held pride of place in our carry case and are regularly brought into action.

We were particularly impressed by the comfortable design. After being raised on hard plastic earbuds (and the friction injuries they cause after longer sessions), it was surprising not to feel any fatigue even after hours of use. It was also easy to acclimatise to the feel and balance here as well.

Super Mario Sunshine’s harmonic melodies rang out particularly well through these 10mm drivers, with smaller soundscapes offering the Roccat Syn Buds Core a real chance to show their detailing and mid-ranges. However, more complex stages like that of Doom did cause some distortion.

Still, that $24.99 / £24.99 price point means they’re easy enough to grab and keep as a backup, even if they don’t become your go-to.

1. Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit

The best Nintendo Switch accessory for Mario fans

Specifications

What’s in the box: 1x Mario RC car with AR camera, 1x Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit download, track markers

Reasons to buy

+Bags of content+Great price point+Endless replayability

Reasons to avoid

-AI sometimes doesn’t play by the rules-Multiplayer will cost you

Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit launched just in time for the holidays of 2020, but stocking issues meant that it didn’t really get its engines going until mid-2021. That said, there’s plenty to dig into here, and this is a particularly strong Nintendo Switch accessory for anyone who’s already got their money’s worth out of Mario Kart 8: Deluxe.

Place the included Mario or Luigi RC car down in your home, and install the Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit software to watch your home turn into its own racetrack.  You’ll be controlling your real-life cart around a course you create with the cardboard track markers and playing against AI competitors using the same space as well – all on the screen of your Nintendo Switch.

Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit is everything we hoped it could be, with a few caveats, and it’s easy to wonder why it hadn’t been done sooner.

Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit

We took Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit out for a spin when it first launched, and it’s remain a firm party piece ever since. In our testing, we were a little frustrated to find instances where AI would sometimes fly through the physical obstacles you’d set out to create a track, sometimes ignoring the layout completely. We only encountered this issue with any regularity in race mode, though, and firmly believe that pass and play time trials are the best way to play.

All the cardboard race parts feel well produced, and continue to survive plenty of crashes to this day. However, we would recommend playing on a hard floor in plenty of light; carpets cause considerable judder under these smaller wheels, and dim lights will cut your video quality considerably.

If Wii Fit taught us anything, it’s that Nintendo likes to get us moving. Ring Fit Adventure feels like what those early fitness games should have been all along – fun and engaging, while making working out a celebrated core mechanic that actually feels like it’s worth doing. You’ll be travelling through a gorgeous world, sprinting, crunching, and squatting your way through platforming levels and boss battles throughout your quest. Not only is it incredibly enjoyable, but it also provides a solid workout to boot. Plus, the Ring Fit Adventure price has been steadily falling over the last few months as well.

The best Nintendo Switch charger

Reasons to buy

+Exactly the same as the original plug+Official Nintendo product+Reliable

Reasons to avoid

-Pricey

In a twist that’ll surprise no-one, the best Nintendo Switch charger is the official AC Adapter. Having been built specifically for the console, it’s easily the most reliable version. And if you’ve lost or broken the original and want a replacement, why not just get the same thing?

That’s why it’s so appealing. You know what you’re getting, and you know what to expect. Yes, it might be a bit more expensive than cheaper, third-party alternatives. But the official AC Adapter is a ticket to peace of mind.

2. Genki Covert Dock

The best third party charger and dock

Specifications

Cable length: 1.8mWeight: 100gDimensions: 60 x 33 x 44 mmOutput: 30W USB-C

Reasons to buy

+Incredibly convenient+International adapters included+No safety concerns

Reasons to avoid

-30W charging doesn’t compete with other adapters

The Genki Covert Dock is a revelation. Not only are you getting a wall adapter to plug your Switch in (as well as the USB-C cable), but this device is primarily designed to offer a portable third party dock for on the go play. At the time of writing, we’ve been using the Covert Dock for months and have no concerns over the safety to our console. In fact, this is the best Nintendo Switch accessory in our arsenal right now.

While that $74.99 / £84.99 price is a little lofty, it’s fully justified if you’re after a travelling companion or a slightly cheaper dock alternative.

Genki Covert Dock review

The Covert Dock never presented us with any visual stuttering or power drops during testing, though we did note the 30W charging capacity was considerably lower than other, sometimes cheaper, competitors. That means it’s not quite an all-in-one solution for keeping your phone and laptop topped up on the go at the same time, but it’s certainly better than slinging a whole official dock into your backpack.

Simply hook an HDMI cable up to your TV (we tested and were satisfied with cables of up to 8m), connect your Switch via the included USB-C cable and you’re good to go. Setup was a straight plug and play affair across all our travels.

The adapter design of the Covert Dock itself means you won’t be slotting this neatly into a standard clamshell case, but it will still tuck itself into any corner of a backpack particularly well. Plus, it’s good to know that you’re also getting three international outlet adapters in the box as well – for UK, US, EU and Australian outlet types. Just remember, the Genki Covert Dock won’t work for the Nintendo Switch Lite.

Reasons to buy

+Charges phones, tablets, and more+Multiple ports+Faster charging

Reasons to avoid

-Expensive

If you’re rocking an older Nintendo Switch, a portable charger is one of the most essential Nintendo Switch accessories out there. We’d say the best portable charger you can get for Switch would be the Anker PowerCore 26800mAH. Besides being able to quickly charge your console, it’s also small enough to be very portable.

As an official Anker product, you know you’re getting good-quality tech right away. It’ll give you extra hours of play when you’re on the move, and it can charge other devices (like your phone) as well. That’s makes it even better value for money, and a must-have for all Switch owners.

4. Hori Joy-Con Charge Stand

The best Joy-Con charger

Specifications

Weight: 149gDimensions: 165 x 88 x 151 mmCapacity: 4 Joy-Con

Reasons to buy

+Speedy charging+Can charge via dock +Capacity for four Joy-Con

Reasons to avoid

-Need to plug into wall for best results

If you’ve got more Joy-Con than consoles (and with all the color choice, who doesn’t), then you might have a hard time keeping them all ready and juiced up before a big Mario Kart tournament. The Hori Joy-Con Charge Stand can keep up to four of your gamepads charging at once – perfect for keeping all your dinky controllers ready to go.

Not only is it a handy Nintendo Switch accessory in its own right, but you can also plug this model directly into your Switch dock to keep those cables down. However, we’d recommend finding a wall outlet if you’re looking for a particularly speedy charge. LEDs will let you know the status of your controller batteries, and each controller slots neatly in with a rail system similar to that of the console itself.

Best Nintendo Switch accessories – screen protectors

1. Spigen Tempered Glass Nintendo Switch screen protector

The best screen protector for Nintendo Switch

Specifications

Thickness: 0.33mmRating: 9HNumber in pack: 2

Reasons to buy

+Oleophobic coating to prevent fingerprints+Easy to apply+Rounded edges

Reasons to avoid

-More expensive than budget products

If you’re after long-lasting protection (and a couple of attempts to achieve it) the Spigen tempered glass Nintendo Switch screen protector is one of the best options on the market. You’re getting two panels here, so you’ve always got another spare and a second chance to apply it correctly.

At 9H hardness, you’ll be protecting your screen from scratches, bumps, and scrapes while also still being able to see your screen in full brightness and clarity. That’s something you don’t tend to get from cheaper screen protectors, so it’s worth shelling out just a little extra for this Spigen model.

It’s worth noting, though, that this is only compatible with the full Nintendo Switch.

2. AmFilm Tempered Glass Screen Protector for Nintendo Switch Lite

Specifications

Thickness: 0.33mmRating: 9HNumber in pack: 3

Reasons to buy

+99.9% transparency +Oloeophobic coating

Reasons to avoid

-No anti-glare

If you’re after a screen protector for your Nintendo Switch Lite, amFilm might be the brand for you. You’re getting three tempered glass sheets in here, with each one promising to be 99.9% transparent. That means you’ll still be able to see all your games clear and bright but be safe in the knowledge that that 9H hardness rating is keeping your display safe and secure.

At 0.3mm thin this is one of the skinnier models on the shelves, which means you’re still getting full touchscreen sensitivity too.
